Open Source Yoga advocates fight "Atom
Bomb Balls" Bikram
03/22/2005 05:01 PMXeni Jardin:

We've blogged about Bikram the yogi blowhard before -- Mr. Choudhury
has been making headlines over efforts to enforce copyright on a
popular style of yoga he claims to have invented. He's been
threatening to sue folks who teach them without permission (or
licensing fees).
Now there are reports that a group called "Open Source Yoga Unity" has
filed a suit in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, asking the judge
to declare that Bikram cannot use his copyrights to stop others from
practicing or teaching the Bikram sequence of poses.
Apart from the Bikram pose sequence, Mr. Chodhury is also famous for
having uttered these words:
"Because I have balls like atom bombs, two of them, 100 megatons each.
Nobody fucks with me."

Flash against Bush
Flash against Bush
12/02/2003 01:46 AMIn general I hate Flash. Its primary use on the web seems to be
advertising and stupid corporate home pages with letters rotating
around the screen then centering and getting larger. One of the many
reasons to move to Firebird as my primary browser was that Firebird
has an easy way to disable Flash with the Flash Click to View
extension. However, after seeing the work of Erich Blumrich, I can see
the promise of Flash. Erich has created a site called Bushflash.com,
and he has spent the last year creating small movies about what
"President" Bush is doing to this country. Some of them are great. One
of the most recent, Mission Accomplished, is quite moving.

05/01/2004 04:46 AMMATTHEWS: Mr.
Secretary, let me ask you about the war in Iraq and the boldest
question I could put to you here in the Pentagon. Did you ever advise
the president to go to war?
[...]
RUMSFELD: You ought to get a life. You could do something besides
read those books.
MATTHEWS: This is my life. Let me ask you about something a little
more...
RUMSFELD: Let me answer your question.
MATTHEWS: Did you advise the president to go to war?
RUMSFELD: Yes. He did not ask me, is the question. And to my
knowledge, there are a number of people he did not
ask.
Woodward said he found that the
administration quietly shifted money around to pay for early
preparations for war in Iraq, without the approval of Congress. He
said those preparations included building landing strips and
addressing other military needs in Kuwait.
The money, about $700 million, was taken in July 2002 from a budget
item that had been approved for the war in Afghanistan, Woodward
wrote.
"Some people are going to look at that document called the
Constitution, which says that no money will be drawn from the Treasury
unless appropriated by Congress," Woodward says in his CBS
interview.
Does this mean that the President didn't
consult the Secretary of State or the Secretary of Defense or Congress
on the decision to go to war?
It
appears he did consult God.
I'm in Europe so I have no idea how much coverage this is getting
in the US, but isn't this an important issue?

Bush Says No to Using Oil Stockpiles
Bush Says No to Using Oil Stockpiles
05/19/2004 08:43 PMAP: Bush Won't Tap Into Petroleum Reserve. President Bush on
Wednesday rejected Democrats' calls to ease high gasoline prices by
tapping the nation's petroleum reserve, saying such action would leave
America vulnerable to terrorism in a time of war.
Good for Bush. Tapping this oil is the dumbest move we
could make right now.
The market will force a certain amount of common sense eventually,
though this market is hardly a free one. The oil cartel holds far too
much power.
But Bush's answer, to pass his ludicrous energy plan that's basically
more of the same plus an environmentally messy push into the Alaskan
wilderness, is even worse. His energy bill is baubles for his industry
friends and a lousy deal for the rest of us.
A much better policy idea, though it has absolutely no chance at the
moment, is putting a 50 cents or $1
additional tax on
gasoline and using the money to pay for a crash national program to
kick the fossil fuels habit, or at least drastically reduce oil
consumption. Give the working poor some kind of rebate (or assistance
in buying more energy-efficient cars and appliances).
We need an economy where energy comes mostly from safe renewable
resources (not nuclear, which creates its own set of problems) and,
through massive conservation efforts, where we don't consume nearly so
much fuel to begin with. Reducing our dependence on dictators in the
unstable Middle East and oddball leaders elsewhere would be a huge
bonus.
A serious government would tackle this. Someday, it will.
