Microsoft accuses EU of 'unprecedented
regulatory intervention'
04/23/2004 01:24 AMMicrosoft Corp. accused the European Commission yesterday of creating
new law and engaging in "unprecedented regulatory intervention" in its
antitrust ruling against the Redmond company.
The assertion, part of a seven-page rebuttal from the company, was
made public as the European Commission released the full text of its
decision in the case. The 300-page decision details the commission's
reasons for imposing a record fine and ordering behavioral remedies
beyond provisions of the company's U.S. antitrust settlement.
Together, the documents give new insights into the positions both
sides took as they engaged in ultimately unsuccessful settlement talks
before the commission's ruling March 24. They also give a sense for
the arguments to be made in Microsoft's expected appeal to the
European Court of First Instance.

It's either feast or

originally thought. This little bugger plays video and is about as
small as a package of playing cards. It is so cool, in fact, that it
might just be my lust item for the next week or so until someone comes
out with the combo Hello Kitty/beer maker/LCD video player/back
massager. That would then become my favorite item in the world.

Sudy Poses Interesting Questions
Sudy Poses Interesting Questions
01/06/2004 02:33 PMResearch and Markets has come out with a new study that asks some
interesting questions, but doesn't offer answers unless you buy the
report, apparently: One interesting question the study poses is, how
can health providers, which have stringent security requirements, be
major users of WLANs if security is so poor? I suppose that's because
there are security solutions but they can be complicated or expensive
to deploy. Another question is, why do some universities hang one AP
for every 15 students and others use one for 100 students? That points
to the fact that deploying WLANs is a fairly new phenomena and IT
folks are likely experimenting with how many APs are necessary.
Authors of the report also wonder why some startups have over 100
customers if there are too many 802.11 companies. That's a silly
question as a company can have thousands of customers and still fail
if the business case doesn't work out....
New Online Scam Poses As Paid Web Ad
New Online Scam Poses As Paid Web Ad
04/07/2005 10:29 PMShape-shifting internet scammers have done it again. The goal: lure
unsuspecting users into submitting credit card and/or other personal
information under false pretenses, aka phishing. Nothing new there --
anyone who has read their email in the past couple years has probably
received at least one fake eBay or Washington Mutual notice requesting
that you update your account. Perhaps one too many of us caught on to
these fraudulent emails (not having an eBay, WaMu, etc. account is
usually the first sign of suspicious activity). The latest spin on
this (internet)-age-old chicanery:
paid web ads
for cheap airline tickets. Who woulda thunk it? Tapping our innate
desire for discount airfare while exploiting our inherent trust of
online advertisers is a pretty devious combination. People also trust
those who carry the ads to weed out bogus come-ons, not realizing how
difficult that is. This means, it's probably only a matter of time
until
Google or
Yahoo get sued by someone who fell for the fake ad. The scammers
compound the theft with a double-whammy, displaying an error message
after receiving your details and requesting the fee by money order.
Ouch. No word on a victim count yet, but then again, cyber-fraud of
this nature seems to flourish even without a high success ratio.
