Wireless USB 1.0 spec to be finalized
next month
04/11/2005 10:22 AM
Version 1.0 of the Wireless USB (Universal Serial Bus) specification, which is being promoted as the successor to the USB data transfer method between electronics devices, should be approved by mid-May, Intel (Profile, Products, Articles) said last week. The Wireless USB specification is for 480Mbps transfer speed over distances of about three meters and it will work at lower speeds up to a distance of about 10 meters.

A candidate Version 1.0 specification was sent to the Wireless USB Promoter Group on April 1 for a 45 day review, said Jeff Ravencraft, technology strategist for Intel's Communications Technology Lab, at a press event during the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) Japan 2005, on Friday. "The new news is...we'll have the specification finalized on or about May 15," he said.

tokyotower2.jpg imageNHK and five other Japanese broadcast-related companies have finalized on the first proposed site for "Tokyo Tower 2." Sumida Ward, best known for "that building with the golden piece of crap on top," is in eastern Tokyo. In case you were wondering why we are reporting on such a thing, Japan is planning on dropping all analog TV broadcasts by the 2011; Tokyo Tower 2 will serve as an Eye of Sauron for terrestrial digital broadcasts. The new tower is planned to be about 600 meters (~2,000 feet) tall, easily dwarfing the current Tokyo Tower at 333 meters (~1,092 feet).

Best Methods For Broadcasting Live Audio

Best Methods For Broadcasting Live Audio
On The Web
12/15/2003 02:26 AM
We don't normally do "Ask Techdirt" type posts, but this is a good question, and Jeremiah Jacobs has been doing very interesting things with online music, which we like to encourage (and has been an active, thoughtful commenter on Techdirt). So, if anyone has some good thoughts, feel free to note them in the comments. Jeremiah writes "Dear Techdirt: What's the best means for "broadcasting" audio via the web? I'm aware of things like Shoutcast, and it's ilk, but I'm in need of something I can use to create a 128k or higher mp3 stream in realtime. The overall concept is that I want to put on sessions where surfers can listen in @ near-CD quality while I compose/mix/screw-off in my studio, with a live audio feed right from my mixing station. The idea being to give people some insight (directly) into the creative process, as they can listen in on actual creative/production sessions. Later on, I want to couple this with a webcam feed, too. I am capable of implementing suggestions in both M$ and Linux environments. Thanks for your suggestions."

sony_bigbrains.jpgGood morning, internet friends. I've come to enjoy waking up to Gawker Media's server being hosed—it's like a cyber-space snooze button. Now, sadly, they live again, and news we must. If I wanted to sleep in all the time, I might consider working for Sony, who has patented the concept of beaming ultrasonic signals into a person's brain to transmit recorded images or sounds, as seen in The Matrix or every other anime. Sounds amazing, right? Too bad it's all bullshit:

A Sony Electronics spokeswoman told the magazine that no experiments had been conducted, and that the patent "was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."
So that's all you have to do to get a patent? Why aren't science fiction writers loaded, then? (Thanks, Everybody!)

The RIAA wants a broadcasting flag put
on Internet Radio!
05/25/2004 07:05 AM

Do you remember when you where a kid and you did not have enough money to buy music and you taped music directly off the radio onto your cassette tape. I am sure some of you are going to say are you kidding who would do that. Well I did as my allowance each week definitely was not spent on music. But now because the RIAA has finally figured out that people can record streaming feeds from the Internet they have decided that is how people are going to be stealing music.

I personally pay for my streaming audio feeds and if I want to record them and listen to those feeds when I find time then that should be my business. I am sure the FCC is going to give the RIAA what they want. Become a advocate of protecting fair use of copyrighted materials [Doc Searls] [TechDirt ]

It also features a variety of other comments by people like Heather Armstrong, if that's your kind of thing. And now - I'm off to explore the wilds of Hayes Valley, find Cal Henderson and have a drink before I fall over and go to sleep.
