The Copyright Board of Canada has given the go-ahead for a new compromise levy on digital audio recorders, despite rigid opposition from the public and a group of concerned retailers including Apple and Wal-Mart. Apple Computer has contracted to use the powerful video, image, and music chips designed by Alphamosaic of Cambridge, UK, in a future multimedia mobile device. A report in the Silicon Valley Watcher says the British company was acquired by Broadcom last year. According to the report, the branding for the Apple multimedia product is not yet known. The public specifications describing the Alphamosaic chips indicate Apple could use it to build a family of mobile hand-held digital devices equipped with wireless communications more advanced than its current iPod family. Broadcom's 54g technology is already used by Apple for its wireless products.

Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing buddy Eli the Bearded sez:
Some Apple Powerbooks have a motion sensor inside that allows the computer to detect how it is being moved. This is useful for, eg, emergency harddrive head parking when a sudden fall is detected. Amit Singh, while preparing for a book on OS X internals, has written several programs that use the motion sensor for other purposes. This page mentions those and then goes into great detail about a device driver to use the motion of the computer as a substitute mouse.

Apple Chipset Bombshell: Super

gpod.jpgPrepare for speculation a-go-go: Apple just licensed a chipset that is capable of not only music and video, but 3D graphics and image capturing with resolutions up to 8-megapixel. Silicon Valley Watcher is reporting that Apple has contracted to use a chipset from UK company Alphamosaic. And not only is the chipset powerful, it can be integrated with chips from Alphamosaic's parent company Broadcom to provide wireless communication, from cell phones to Bluetooth to Wi-Fi.

Now as much fun as it is to wonder if Apple is making a video/gaming/cellphone/camera/music device, you also have to realize that Apple often doesn't exploit the full power of the chipsets it licenses (the chipset that powers modern iPods is capable of video, for instance). So while Apple could be designing the ultimate convergence device (or Newton II), they could also just be adding video or 3D menus to the new generation of iPod. What we do know is we won't see a product using this hardware until at least next year, so we've got lots of time to wonder.

Who knew that the April Fool's gPod hoax [pictured] would be so quickly probable?
