Turncoats in Bermuda shorts. Arianna Huffington continues to skewer offshore tax shelters in her latest Salon opinion piece. Despite her patriot-speak denouncing these corporations for avoiding taxes while our young men are getting ready to die for their country, she does shine the light on a growing problem – “basic fairness and economic justice” – or, the lack of it. How can the average American not be outraged at this, when so many of us are expected to be able to account for even the smallest charitable donation we would dare to use as a tax write-off?

Xeni Jardin: Last week in LA, I went to a Channel 101 screening -- monthly events where a edgy creatives show short films before a live audience, who in turn vote the work on or off the proverbial viewing island. The project isn't a cable TV show yet, but it ought to be. I understand they recently shot a pilot for Fox, so perhaps it will.

One of the teams who participate regularly in the Channel 101 showdowns is The Lonely Island, and they've just posted a bunch of their work online. It's terrific stuff. One of their pieces, which screened at last week's event, is a dry, deadpan music video performed by two guys, called, uh, "Just 2 Guyz." (MPEG-4 Link, MPEG-1 Link, 2 min.). I loved their "Nintendo" animated short, too (MPEG / Quicktime, 3 min.)

Other celeb links -- Brooke Shields has a 5-minute bit in the begining of Episode 2: Regarding Ardy. (Link). Kal Penn (of Harold and Kumar and Gilmore Girls) plays Fred in Episode 2. A source close to the project says, "Kiefer Sutherland interrupted the filming of episode 1, then told all sorts of fanciful embellishments about it on Leno and Letterman. (Link)."

Just Plane Crazy 04/13/2005 02:01 AM
"When stewardesses were sexy and the world was sexist" is the tagline of this years-in-making musical by Suzy Conn, who also runs the blogway baby musicals log (which talks about this musical quite a bit). It's meant to be based around the early 1960's, when airlines were truly a luxury, not unlike a sea cruise or a first-class train ride pre-Amtrak. (The website spends some time going on about Braniff International, and it's worth it to check out the history of that airline. This is also laid out on top of the era of Women's Liberation, although it does so using the aesthetic of 1960's music and phraseology, which was, basically, designed by male-dominated hollywood. For everyone who sits in the cheap seats, if you let the flash animation at the beginning of the site load, it plays the entire opening title song for you. Hey, free show!

On the plane to San Diego

On the plane to San Diego 02/10/2004 02:47 AM

Back before all this weblogging stuff, I used to work as a consultant. Every Monday I had to get up and fly off to some city (Newark NJ, Bloomington IL by way of Chicago, Atlanta, etc.) where I'd spend the week working on-site at the client's office, and then I'd fly home on Friday afternoon, often barely arriving in time for dinner. I'd have two days home, and then be off again bright early Monday AM. It was fun and grueling, and this morning I got a little taste of my old life.

I woke up at 4:45 AM to catch a 7 AM flight to San Diego for the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. At the gate I noticed my former compatriots, the Monday morning business travelers. During the pre-boarding, I was the only woman, surrounded by men with suits, briefcases, and trench coats. It was just like the old days, and yet it wasn't, thanks to the amazing technology advances in the past six years. In the past it used to take me two laptop batteries to make it across the country, and even then, I'd often run out. And as for music, I was pretty much limited to the amount of CDs I could carry with me. So far today I've been flying for over three hours and I've got nearly 50% of my battery left on my iBook. My iPod also still has half its charge, and over 4 straight days of music sit at my fingertips. Pretty incredible, it sure makes for a more pleasant trip. Now if only they could do something about speeding up the flight, and warming up the plane!

Just Put A Cellular Tower In The Plane

Just Put A Cellular Tower In The Plane 04/21/2004 03:53 PM
In something of a followup to a post from a few weeks ago, Guy Kewney is going through every reason given for banning mobile phones on planes and explaining why it doesn't have to be true. The real issue isn't one of danger (as has been pointed out many times before), but that each phone would be contacting so many cellular towers on the ground it would cause problems for the carriers. The simple solution (mentioned in that earlier article) is to place a modified mobile cellular tower on the plane that directs all communication down in a more appropriate manner. Having found such a local tower, the phones won't broadcast out to all the other towers on the ground. Still, some are worried about the danger issue, and Kewney systematically points out why all their arguments don't make sense. Of course, none of this addresses the annoy ance issue - but perhaps we'll have airlines that advertise "no phoning" planes or zones and we'll basically be back to where we are now.

New Year's Day RC Plane Extravaganza

New Year's Day RC Plane Extravaganza 01/06/2005 11:39 AM

rcplanejan1.jpgThe remote controlled plane photography dudes went nuts on New Year's Day, and they've just compiled their aerial photographs from the US, Europe, and Australia. Seemingly none of them got arrested for being Al Qaeda cells or something.

We wonder where this will lead: every gadget finds its ideal application, and we're pretty much thinking the ideal application of RC photo-planes will be buzzing the Playboy mansion for overhead views of nekkid, partying Playmates.

X-Plane 8.06 (Stable branch)

X-Plane 8.06 (Stable branch) 02/01/2005 09:45 PM
Screenshot X-Plane is a flight simulator that reads in the geometric shape of any aircraft and then figures out how that aircraft will fly. It does this via an engineering process called "blade element theory", which involves breaking the aircraft down into many small elements and then finding the forces on each little element many times per second. These forces are then converted into accelerations, which are then integrated to velocities and positions. This gives X-Plane the most realistic flight model available for personal computers.
