Yahoo, Cingular Strike IM Deal
08/06/2004 02:56 PMThe same day that
Microsoft
announced its instant messaging service was available for Verizon
mobile users, Yahoo said it had done a similar deal with Verizon rival
Cingular. On Thursday, Cingular said users of its MEdia Net service
can now log onto the Yahoo Web site from their phones and use its
instant messaging (IM) network, as well as access Yahoo Mail and the
sports, weather, and news information posted on the portal.

Cingular Adds Wi-Fi Roaming, EDGE Deal
03/14/2005 05:46 PM Cingular jumps into Wi-FI market with Wayport, others: The other shoe
dropped. Cingular is 60 percent owned by SBC, which has the most
ambitious, well-priced, and comprehensive plan of any of the telephone
carriers, fixed line or wireless. And I'm not just saying that because
I'm writing these words in Austin, Texas, SBC's real home territory.
Cingular announced that their Wi-Fi plan will include all of Wayport's
roaming network, apparently including the McDonald's locations. They
also made deals with StaOnline (hotels) and Concourse (airports).
Cingular took over AT&T Wireless's locations after the merger,
which include Denver International Airport and northeast corridor
Amtrak stations. The deal doesn't mention SBC FreedomLink, which has
several thousand of its own locations now, but I would expect that to
be included at some point, especially since Wayport builds and manages
those locations, so integration should be trivial. And Cingular isn't
reselling its locations back out to other operators or aggregators
beyond those deals that are already in place. The announcement tries
to focus on EDGE, the nationwide deployed 2.5G service that AT&T
Wireless had completed before the merger, and was one of its gems.
EDGE will eventually migrate north to UMTS and then HSDPA with much
faster speeds. EDGE delivers dial-up modem or better, with rates up
above 100 Kbps, but it's certainly still trumped by EVDO basic double
to quadruple rate with much higher bursty rates. Which is why it's a
little weird that Cingular is pricing unlimited EDGE at $80 per month
with an extra $20 per month bringing you unlimited Wi-Fi at 4,000
locations. True, Cingular has the highest-speed national network with
EDGE, but that's like saying, we can bring you a 4 oz. beef patty
everywhere when the competitor is delivering a small but juicy steak
at the same price but just in certain outlets and a 2 oz. beef patty
elsewhere (1xRTT with fast dial-up speeds). There's a market decision
here that might be based on appearance rather than producing demand
especially since Cingular says in the press release EDGE and Wi-Fi are
being sold through its business group not to general consumers....

Cingular buys AT+T Wireless
Cingular buys AT+T Wireless
02/17/2004 11:47 AM$41 billion. What will the resulting company be, and do?
Wow. Dan
Gillmor has
this to say about why the mega-merger shouldn't
worry those concerned about carrier consolidation:
This merger won't necessarily be bad for competition.I've been using
AT&T Wireless' GSM service for about a year now. Quality of service is
marginal, and the customer service has been a bit lower than marginal.
But Cingular, also a GSM carrier, has an even worse reputation. So
maybe combining these two networks will create something that offers
at least reasonable quality.
Cingular probably overpaid, but it's smart to make this deal in at
least one respect. There's only room for a couple of mergers before
the market gets too cozy for real competition. While expecting serious
antitrust scrutiny from the Bush administration is probably futile,
there's probably enough angst in Congress to keep consolidation from
being rampant.

Cingular Buys AT&T Wireless; Whither
3G?
02/17/2004 11:44 AMCingular has successful bid for AT&T Wireless -- and where's the
data discussion in all this?: The coverage of the AT&T Wireless
deal focused almost exclusively on customer acquisition, marketing
budgets, infrastructure, and voice revenue, despite the growing
certainty that next-generation (3G) cell data and voice services will
be the biggest competitive factors for U.S.-based carriers in the
remainder of this decade. AT&T Wireless has nationwide EDGE (about 100
Kbps top realistic speed, but more like high-modem speeds reliably).
Cingular has GPRS, but last year was saying they would be building out
EDGE quickly, and then hasn't discussed it since. The combined company
will obviously focus its efforts on a quicker rollout of W-CDMA, the
GSM evolution standard for 3G data/voice, especially with the
commitment of Verizon Wireless of $1 billion to fully deploy 1xEvDO
(up to 400 Kbps) nationwide this year. (Verizon Wireless has overnight
become the No. 2 U.S. carrier, pending approval of the Cingular
acquisition of AT&T Wireless.) A not-so-obscure factoid missed in all
of the reporting I've seen about AT&T Wireless is its requirement to
repay a $6.1 billion -- yes, BILLION -- loan to DoCoMo if they don't
have four U.S. cities set up by Dec. 31, 2004, with commercially
offered 3G data services. (Here's an article from last July about it.)
EDGE is 2.5G and doesn't qualify, as I understand it, but I haven't
seen an update on the story. It's strange that in a $41 billion deal a
loan of $6.1 billion that would need to be repaid if conditions
weren't met that are currently unmet wasn't highlighted as one of the
liabilities of acquiring the company. I can only hope that Cingular
did more due diligence than some of the business press....
