More .Mac Benefits

More .Mac Benefits 03/13/2003 10:16 AM

Apple has added two more great .Mac benefits for .Mac subscribers. Normally $30, Aladdin's DropStuff is now a free download for .Mac members. This easy to use utility compresses files with drag and drop simplicity. Stuffit Deluxe, Aladdin's full-featured compression utility, is being offered at a special price for .Mac members. Regularly $79.99, Stuffit Deluxe is available for $39.99. More information on both of these benefits can be found at the .Mac website.

Poor, Much-Maligned Alcohol Gets A Good Word: It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place/Except you and me,/So set 'em' up Joe, I got a little story/ I think you should know... And the story is something, if you're a drinker, you probably already know. (I was so surprised by this article I wondered if it was sponsored by the booze industry. But then I mixed myself another drink; read the wonderfully-named, probably Guinness - and poteen-fuelled - Dublin Principles and drank its health anyway!)

Friends With Benefits

Friends With Benefits 08/12/2004 11:21 AM
In the current issue of Wired magazine, a piece I wrote on social swap nets:
Think of them as eBay crossed with Napster, then injected with Friendster DNA. The newest social networking services merge three powerful Web functions - auctioning, file-sharing, and friend-of-a-friend socializing - to build digital barter economies. Unlike first-gen social networks, these communities are about more than getting laid and getting paid. These "social swap nets" help like-minded members pool digital resources - music, movies, games, even hardcover books.

Mediachest and SongBuddy are two early examples. They're still small (and size matters when it comes to a well-stocked "sharing pool"), but their very existence points to a new era in networked transactions, one in which online exchanges become more useful.

Here's how they work: Members browse one another's collections online using filters such as friend groups, geographic location, or other affinities. This isn't file-swapping in the old outlaw Napster sense. They can access one another's stuff, but the original copy literally traded with others, rather than downloaded and duplicated via P2P. Getting hold of the goods is mostly a low tech affair. Members often mail or hand-deliver items.

The golden benefits of C'ing your PHP

The golden benefits of C'ing your PHP 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
I've seen some posts in response to my experiments C'ing my PHP code. Some of them have questioned the benefits. Well my experiments are that of a beginner (hint: remember the kiddie emoticons), so you have to take what i say with a grain of salt.

My initial conversion was the most commonly called function in the ADOdb api, MoveNext(). This function is just a wrapper to a database call, so there's not much to tune and a small speedup is only to be expected.

Finding things to tune is like looking for gold. We need to understand a bit about the geology of our code before we can hit paydirt. We are looking for functions which are frequently called, contain a substantial amount of PHP code, but not too complicated that it becomes a pain to port to C, preferably involves a lot of looping, and is unlikely to ever change (it's much less fun to maintain this than maintaining a secret love affair).

Well i just hit a rich seam. There is a function called ADORecordset::GetArray(), which creates a 2D array from a recordset. Now it calls the C function adodb_getall(). I did some global optimizations that are impossible to do in a PHP script, and the speed improvement is about 75%. This function is used to emulate record counting, so it's used in every query against oracle, mssql or any other commercial database.

As i learn more, things could get even faster.

Weighing The Costs And Benefits Of
Security

Weighing The Costs And Benefits Of
Security
05/04/2004 12:21 PM
We've talked before about how many business decision makers seem to constantly focus on one side of the cost-benefit equation. When times are good, they only focus on benefits of the decisions they make, without paying attention to the true costs. When times are bad they are only looking to cut costs, without realizing how much that may harm other aspects of their business. It seems like a fairly simple concept to weigh both sides - but in practice, it happens so rarely. It's not just in business, either. Bruce Schneier is complaining that when it comes to national security, no one appears to be doing the same sort of cost-benefit analysis. Many of our national security proposals have tradeoffs. Many of those tradeoffs may be worth it, but it doesn't appear that anyone is actually weighing the two sides. Instead, they're saying "this will benefit us, let's do it." No one bothers to look at the costs in terms of monetary costs, inconvenience costs or even impact on society. Much of this is a result of the sound-bite culture we live in, where you only have enough time to explain one side of the issue, and you might as well focus on the benefits. No one wants to hear about costs.
