Our panel of judges has selected the top three entries and they're all terrific. Gmail contest winners

Gmail contest winners 06/14/2004 02:18 AM

First off, let me just say I got a ton of response to my gmail photo invites thing and among the entries I got far too many good ones to pick just a few. I actually used gmail's built-in tools to track everything. By labeling all incoming entries, I can see in one click that 118 people sent a photo link in. Of those, I put a star next to 36 I liked on first view. Of those, I narrowed them down to 31. Among those 31, there was something compelling about the colors, lighting, and/or subject matter and any one of ten could have had the top spots. I'm going with my gut reaction on first viewing but here are the three winning entries:

a kite photo, a net photo, & a sunset photo

It was really hard to pick the top three, as any one of these could have also been there. If I had more invites to give out, I would have thrown them all into this list, in no particular order:

§ § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § §

I learned some things in this experiment. The biggest one is that when I said "send in your best photo" I figured that meant the best composition with the best lighting and most technically superior image. What most people sent was their finest memory captured on film, regardless of photo quality. It was eye-opening to me, and told me a lot about over a hundred strangers. I got to see many, many photos from vacations and untold numbers of sunsets. It's a fantastic way to experience meaningful moments in peoples' lives, by seeing these photos. I've been getting way too far into the technical side of photography for the last year or two and forgot that photography is first and foremost a way to record memories.

Overall, I got to see (and share here) many wonderful photos and memories from those that sent them in. I wish I had more invites to give and thank everyone for participating.

Fine Art of Sampling Contest Winners 03/14/2005 06:06 PM

The final winners of the Freestyle Mix, and the Milita Mix contests have been announced on Mixter. The top eleven Freestyle Mix entries have won a spot on the Creative Commons release, The WIRED CD -- Ripped. Sampled. Mashed. Shared. (playing off the original WIRED CD), and free passes to the M3 Music Summit in Miami. The top track of the Militia Mix Contest won a spot on the next Fine Arts Militia Album Featuring Chuck D. Brian Hardgroove of Fine Arts Militia has this to say: "Overall, I would have been proud to put most of those mixes on the new record -- mad props to the producers."

We'd like to offer a huge thanks to all the contestants and judges, and specifically to Victor Stone for building Mixter and moderating the site (more on Mixter later). This experiment has yielded some great music that will hopefully promote the concept of collaboration over space and time, even further.

EFF Pioneer award winners announced 04/08/2005 05:28 AM
Cory Doctorow: Next Wednesday, as part of the festivities in Seattle's Computers, Freedom and Privacy confernece, EFF will host its Pioneer Awards, at 7PM at the Sci Fi Museum. Today, the org released the list of (very) distinguished winners for the year:
Dr. Patrick Ball is a leading innovator in applying scientific measurement to human rights. He directs the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG) at Benetech (www.benetech.org), a nonprofit organization that combines the impact of technological solutions with the social entrepreneurship business model to help disadvantaged communities. He served as the catalyst behind two open source software tools for the human rights community, "Martus" and "Analyzer," which aid in the secure storage and analysis of data on human rights violations. He will be accepting his award from East Timor.

Edward Felten is a professor of Computer Science at Princeton University whose research interests include computer security and technology law and policy. He brings these scholarly interests to his work as an activist. In 2001, Felten and EFF sued the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) in a case challenging the constitutionality of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Felten is also author of "Freedom to Tinker" (www.freedom-to-tinker.com), a highly regarded weblog exploring the ways government and industry attempt to limit technological innovation and what activists can do about it.

Mitch Kapor is President and Chair of the Open Source Applications Foundation (www.osafoundation.org), a nonprofit organization he founded in 2001 to promote the development and acceptance of high-quality application software developed and distributed using open source methods and licenses. He is widely known as founder of Lotus Development Corporation and the designer of Lotus 1-2-3, the "killer app" that made the personal computer ubiquitous in the business world in the 1980's. In 1990 he co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation and served as its chairman until 1994.

Bicycle Tire Carpeting 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

bicycle_rubber_carpet.jpgNani Marquina shows us that not all (bicycle) tires are destined to become fodder for long-burning fires in boring Simpsons episodes. Instead, designer Ariadna Miquel has developed a carpet made from bicycle inner tubes. "The Bicicleta collection was born out of research into the possibility of using recycled rubber to create new textures." A trip to India was the primary inspiration and I must admit I now have a very strange attraction to discovering just what this feels like on one's feet. I'm sure it'll give you a whole different type of rug burn, at the very least.

Hands Free Kit For Your Bicycle?

Hands Free Kit For Your Bicycle? 02/18/2004 03:43 AM
I do quite a bit of biking, and only if I know I'm going for a really long ride do I take my phone along - just in case something goes wrong and I'm unable to fix things. However, when I do bring it along, I always turn it off and shove it the under the seat pack. It seems that others prefer to use their phone while riding. We've all seen mobile phone hands free kits for cars, but now, mobile phone carrier Orange, in the Netherlands, is offering a free bicycle to new customers with the purchase of a special hands-free kit for bikes. The bicycle even has a built-in battery charger for the mobile phone, so you can keep on talking as long as you pedal fast enough.

Window Seat

Window Seat 05/27/2004 11:02 AM
40_lgGregory Dicum's book "Window Seat: Reading the Landscape from the Air" sounds like a brilliant idea:
"Broken down by region, this unusual guide features 70 aerial photographs; a fold-out map of North America showing major flight paths; profiles of each region covering its landforms, waterways, and cities; tips on spotting major sights, such as the Northern Lights, the Grand Canyon, and Disney World; tips on spotting not-so-major sights such as prisons, mines, and Interstates; and straightforward, friendly text on cloud shapes, weather patterns, the continent's history, and more."
Did you know that the patterns of the streets in subdivisions lets you know when they were built? Or that the round ponds all over Florida are sinkholes? With Window Seat at your side, you'll learn these things. Keep it to yourself though--the person sitting next to you doesn't want to hear it. Link (Thanks, Eric!)

AK Rocker Videogame Seat 09/13/2004 07:22 AM

rocker_sear.jpg imageI had to share Fun Furde's incredulous attitude about this AK Rocker chair. Does anyone really need to use XtreMe Rocking Chairz in the "sand, snow or dirt?" It looks comfortable enough, I guess, but it would be sort of embarrassing to have one of these sitting around in your nice living room. They're cheap enough, at around $80 (or less on eBay, it seems), to consider getting a couple to play Gran Turismo 4 when it hits the streets.

Clearly, though, they should have called them "Rockaro" seats.
