Microsoft and IBM Move Accounts

Microsoft and IBM Move Accounts

Microsoft and IBM Move Accounts 02/18/2004 02:25 AM

Two technology giants, IBM and Microsoft, are reassigning promotional accounts with spending estimated at more than $500 million, decisions that underline the increasing importance of marketing communications outside the realm of traditional advertising. The accounts being awarded by International Business Machines and Microsoft to agencies owned by the Interpublic Group of Companies and the WPP Group cover assignments unrelated to producing television commercials, print advertisements and billboards. Rather, the work is primarily centered on what is known as customer relationship management - that is, efforts to strengthen the loyalties of current customers that can range from offers of free merchandise to invitations to sponsored events.

Microsoft bl0ggers on the move

Microsoft bl0ggers on the move 12/05/2003 03:14 AM

Microsoft's bloggers are on the move. Tons of Microsoft employee bloggers have been reopening their blogs over on the .NET Weblogs. The problem is that that homepage now is flying by very fast. Whew. Tons of interesting info. Do you like Microsoft bloggers over there mixed in with community? They used to be over on GotDotNet.

I don't know if I like this new approach, but I'm watching and learning.

Feel free to give frank feedback about this new approach. I'll pass it along.

I wish we could have tons of decentralized communities and not try to do everyone in one centralized place. Why should an employee who wants to blog about the XBOX, for instance, be stuck into .NET Weblogs?

Microsoft still doesn't have a formal policy or a centralized recommendation. It's just that a bunch of employees got someone to open blogs up on GotDotNet and they outgrew that home. I imagine that the .NET Weblogs will be quickly outgrown too.

Right now we're early on in the process of having employees weblog. Imagine what'll happen if the numbers grow from a few hundred to a few thousand? We need to build better systems now to prepare for the growth.

Any ideas?

One of the things we're trying to solve is the problem of having too may accounts all over the web.  The PeopleAggregator's goal is to - well aggregate.  Get it?

One way to do that is to provide federation - i.e. single sign-on. One password - for everything.  Microsoft tried that with something called Passport and everyone flipped out. Especially AOL and a group that formed - called the Liberty Alliance.

Our friends at PingID have an open source federation server called SourceID as well.

Well Drupal has it's own form of federation - and now comes http://oreilly.com/ . I wonder if they used Drupal or what?

Here's the email I just received.....

And remember, if you have been using a screen name to login, you will now use your email address as your log-in.

Your new account now offers easier access to O'Reilly sites, and should help you take maximum advantage of exciting online services and benefits planned for the coming months.

Thanks and see you online,

The O'Reilly Web Team

(*) We are only able to consolidate multiple accounts that are tied to the same email address. If you have multiple accounts using different email addresses for each, we recommend you select one account for all future O'Reilly services.
