Cracking Up

Cracking Up 06/06/2004 09:49 AM
Cracking Up. "In interviews with a number of White House staffers who were willing to talk off the record, a picture of an administration under siege has emerged, led by a man who declares his decisions to be “God’s will” and then tells aides to “fuck over” anyone they consider to be an opponent of the administration."

Cracking wise

Cracking wise 11/19/2003 02:09 PM

A couple kids hacked into a Lowes store database and grabbed a bunch of credit card numbers. They did it wirelessly from the parking lot no less and frankly I'm surprised it was even possible. When I ordered a custom item a couple weeks ago, I noticed that Lowes' internal systems are all tied into open source programs. Custom ordering terminals are running what looked like Redhat, and my order was entered into a mozilla browser (with the URL address bar hidden), running a web app with basic web forms for all data entry.

I suspect these dorks in the parking lot sniffed the traffic and got in. Hopefully Lowes starts using ssh tunnels and https for all communication on the wire, and puts a more robust wireless security system in place. It'd be nice if they released their software somewhere or left it open to public review, so the open source community could find these gaping holes and fix them before they become a problem.

Cracking Iranian codes 06/15/2004 10:17 AM

Bruce Schneier has written an interesting article discussing the accusation of Ahmed Chalabi of informing Iran that the US had broken its codes and when Iran knew that the NSA was cracking their codes. He digs into the history of Crypto AG, the NSA and Iran. He links to an article about Hans Buehler, the Crypto AG salesman who was arrested by Iran in 1992 on suspicion that Crypto AG had installed back doors in its encryption machines. There is no conclusion, but this story reminds me of Crytonomicon and the interesting world of information, misinformation and spying.

Microsoft cracking down on pirates?

Microsoft cracking down on pirates? 09/18/2004 06:53 PM
Today is talk like a pirate day and the crazy folks at Microsoft UK have issued a light-hearted press release having a jab at those who use pirated Microsoft products. Although the press release is a joke, Microsoft recently started an optional Windows Validation process on their download servers. At recent conferences before the release of XPSP2 several Microsoft representatives have hinted at possible PID blocking on other Microsoft applications. In simple terms if you have a pirated version of Windows XP and you install an updated application like Windows Media Player, that application will detect your pirated install and will not install. There are also rumours that Microsoft are cracking down on the pirates themselves. Earlier this week the largest seizure of counterfeit Microsoft software and components took place, worth $80 million. For now the pirates are laughing but it looks like Microsoft are beginning to laugh and I'm sure they'll have the last laugh.

MS Press Release:

"Here be monsters

Avast ye, scurvy knaves, beware of piracy!

September 19th in the year of our lord 2004: Ahoy there! Avast ye on Talk Like A Pirate Day!1 Those who sail aboard the good ship Microsoft have a warning for those bilge rats who make choppy the calm seas with their knavish software tricks.

Because those who try to take the piracy off the high seas and onto their PCs face a fate worse than walking the plank. For they risk cursin' their businesses and being left up a creek without a paddle. They be sinkin' too with no patches to shore up systems, and could catch something far worse than scurvy.

Captain Alex Hilton, of the good ship Microsoft, says: "A lack of swordsmanship and sailing skills will leave the landlubbers high and dry."

So, on Talk Like A Pirate Day heed this tale of woe and do not bring the pirates tricks to your PC, for here be monsters. Yaaargh!"

Cuba Cracking Down On Internet Use

Cuba Cracking Down On Internet Use 01/09/2004 09:50 PM
Two years ago, we had an article about the things people in Cuba needed to do to access the internet. It usually involved buying "access cards" on the blackmarket and then dialing up from home where they have access to some (but not all) websites. As it stands, it's almost entirely illegal for Cuban citizens to get on the internet. Well, it seems that some folks in the Cuban government have decided that even this amount of sneaky internet access is too much, and are starting to block dialup access to the internet over their phone lines.

My March 21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition because, on the same day, a new events database called EVDB was announced and shown at PC Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...

P-P-P-Powerbook

P-P-P-Powerbook 05/13/2004 10:46 PM
An American Ebay seller realises a European bidder is trying to scam him out of a Powerbook (fake escrow site, hijacked ebay account), so he sends him something far better, a P-P-P-Powerbook! Now, for you non-techies here, a factory model p-p-p-powerbook weights half what it's competitors weigh, comes with an A4 screen, the latest in internet adventure software, zero boot time, a fullsize keyboard (often with Key RedundancyTM) and a state-of-the-art laser bluetooth mouse. This is technology. The seller posts to a forum and amongst the chatter people follow the package via the the Fedex tracking page and some even visit the delivery address (a barbershop/internet cafe) and take photos, video, and a seat for their hair cut. The duty tax on this particular p-p-p-powerbook is around £350 (paid for by the scammer) before he sees the package, and a few days later it's released by Customs as they watch in anticipation. A forum member arrives at the internet cafe, takes a seat and soon the package arrives. The scammer opens the box and there are angry raised voices heard. The barber doesn't understand what's wrong and asks... "Is it broken?"

What can we learn from this? In a kickboxing match between Jesus and Jobs, Steve would win. More on 15" Powerbook screens... 11/12/2003 01:19 PM

This is probably well known by now, but according to a friend of mine who is still trying to work out whether to get the 12" or 15" Apple Powerbook, he's been advised by a man he talked to at a London Apple Centre that a 15" variety will take longer to be delivered because Apple have accepted there's a problem with the screen getting brighter spots on it. Apparently they've definitely ceased production while they look into it. This is probably extremely good news for those of us who have a Powerbook with this problem, and it might explain why I have still not received my return voucher, over a week and a half after I rang them up. I'll be checking up on this later, but I thought I should probably share the news. If anyone has more information on the subject, please feel free to add links in the comments.
