01/30/2003 11:31 AMI've had little time to blog and read blogs recently. I've found
myself skimming entry titles quickly and skipping past the ones that
are either (1) stupid or (2) uniformative. If you're using a cute

01/16/2004 10:59 AMGar Burd: "I was very frustrated when I wrote a web page export script
in AppleScript last year. I could not understand why some things
worked and other things did not. I could not find any books or
documentation that described what was going on in the language.
AppleScript was very mysterious to me."

Thanks, Bloggies! BB wins best group
bl0g, and bl0g of the year!
03/14/2005 05:29 PMXeni Jardin:
Boing Boing pal
Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won
Group Weblog of the Year at the
Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly
didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were
many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who
work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in
their honor:
check 'em all
out. On behalf of my blog-mates
Cory Doctorow,
Mark Frauenfelder, and
David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager"
John Battelle; our sysadmin
par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended
family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most
of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise
productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and
for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered
things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to
SXSW in person to accept the award,
but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at
ETCON (
all five of us will be in the same place for the first time).
Boing Boing sprouted online a little over
five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder
and
Carla
Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look
forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come.

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley
sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the
year/best weblog overall” – congratulations!" For those keeping
track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these
two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're
speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.
Entry #2,500
Entry #2,500
06/17/2004 05:49 PMLast September, we celebrated numbe
r 1,000. About two months later, we got to 1,500. Apparently we were too busy to celebrate number 2,000,
because that one slipped by before we noticed.
So, here's 2,500, which is cool for the sole reason that my goal
for the site has always been 5,000 posts. For a long while, I managed
to keep up 10 posts per day, but then my job got the better of me and
I slacked off a bit. For the last 30 days, we've been averaging 3.33
posts per day, which seems really low to me. If you take out
weekends, we get up to about 4.
At this rate we'll hit 5,000 somewhere in February 2006. I'll
still be here. I hope you will too.

Blogger denied entry by DHS - "Blogging
ain't a job"
03/19/2005 03:18 AM
Blogger Jeremy Wright was denied entry to the United States and was
strip searched by the US Department of Homeland Security. One of the
reasons for the suspicion was that the officer didn't believe blogging
was a profession. "Blogging ain’t a job," said the officer.
(Maybe I should modify my last post about amateurs and blogging...)
Jeremy has posted a followup entry which is sober and balanced. He quotes from
memory part of the exchange with the DHS officer.
Him: Why
would you visit someone in the states you’d never met (I
mentioned I was planning to visit several people whilst down there)
Me: Well, I have met most of them, but I’ve talked to them
dozens or hundreds of times online.
Him: Do you have any of their phone numbers?
Me: No, but I talk
Him: You can’t talk to someone without a phone number. Stop
lying to me.
Me: No, really, I can talk from my computer to theirs
Him: Don’t be a smartass. If you don’t have their phone
number, and you’ve never met them, how can you have ever talked
to them.
Me: … (at this point I’ve learned that sarcasm
doesn’t help, nor does answering questions he doesn’t want
to hear the answer to)
Him: So, you’re trying to tell me that you’re going to
visit someone who you’ve never met, never talked to and who
knows nothing about you? And I’m supposed to believe
this?
Good point about sarcasm. On my blog I talk tough
about DHS and immigration, but in front of a DHS officer, I'm very
polite and try to say "yes sir" a lot... Immigration is definitely not
a good play to practice your sarcasm.

Google's Social Networking Entry
01/25/2004 10:32 AMGoogle Tries Out Its Own Friendster-Style
Service: The social networking space is getting awfully crowded,
capped now by Google's entry.
The launch of Orkut comes after Friendster's rejection
late last year of Google's offer to buy the site that has become known
as an online venue for hooking up friends of friends.
It also arrives as new social networking sites are cropping up at a
frenzied pace, fueled by venture capital investments in companies like
Friendster and the business-oriented networking service
LinkedIn.
Still doesn't beat Dogster,
which prompted Anil Dash to plead, "Please God, make it
stopster."
