Trusting the ballot

Trusting the ballot 01/09/2004 09:53 PM
According to an article in yesterday's Miami Herald: In Tuesday's special election to fill state House seat 91, 134 Broward voters managed to use the 2-year-old touch-screen equipment without casting votes for any candidate... The percentage of nonvotes — 1.3 percent — is modest compared to the days of ''hanging'' and ''pregnant chads.'' But in Tuesday's race, every vote was crucial. In a seven-candidate field, Ellyn Bogdanoff beat Oliver Parker by just 12 votes. The non-votes may be due to Democrats entering the voting booth only to discover that there were no Democrats on the ballot. But the mere suspicion...

It's interesting to me that The Guardian's article article about the soldier kidnapped in Iraq - the one who turns out to be a GI Joe action figure - refers readers to its blog for the details of the correction. Why the blog? Perhaps because the blog lets the Guardian talk in a less guarded, more human voice. If the correction were noted in the usual way, could the Guardian have written "Sick as they are, such hoaxes have happened before...," for example? It makes sense to me: Fallibility is the mark of humanity, and, oddly, it's one of the...

TV News in a Postmodern World: The Busine$$ of RSS

"Want a glimpse of tomorrow? Innovators Bill French and Harry Hayes are SmartStream Alliance™ and have a product that's so compelling that news executives of every sort will be scrambling to be first in their market with it....

RSxStream is a sophisticated and ingenious software engine that takes RSS, Atom, RDF, XML, any other sort of feed or data stream, or any other content that lives on the Internet and makes it available to the desktop via a contextual reader. End users are given a state-of-the-art reader — capable of grabbing anything from live TV to music to video-on-demand to simple RSS text feeds. If it's available via the Internet (today), it can be routed through the RSxStream engine. The end users have complete control of what sources they choose, as they would with any other RSS reader. The difference is those choices are drawn indirectly, through the RSxStream software....

What's crucial to understand with this is that whoever provides the reader to the public also owns the engine, and THAT is the business end of RSS. It means advertising can be crafted into the design of the reader and delivered based on the choices, habits and interests of the end user. It's contextual advertising nirvana. This type of business currently does not exist, but it's ideal for local media outlets. Why? Because we're in the information distribution business, and getting the reader onto the public's desktops is the key to its success. Moreover, if the local media entities don't do it, somebody else will, and they will take all those ad dollars with them." [DONATA Communications, via JD on MX]

I love the idea of providing the reader and even pre-populating it with feeds relevant to the intended audience,  but I hate the idea of some company monetizing it. I'd much rather get a grant and have libraries provide this information-centric software. We're in the "information distribution" business, too, except we're interested in people getting information without strings attached.

Easier Dynamic Win32 API

Easier Dynamic Win32 API 04/11/2005 05:42 AM

When Win32 API first came out, it wasn't sprawled out like it is now.  As it expanded (exploded) in spurts across versions, architectures, and service packs, Windows developers had to deal increasingly with the headaches from the need to take advantage of latest features without crippling their software with older Windows.

While one could now use deferred library loading creatively to address this problem, I've always handled it with manual LoadLibrary and GetProcAddress calls.  Well, I finally got tired of doing this so I tried the handy LateLoad, a small MFC-style event framework-like macros that creates a C++ class for each library and a C++ method for each procedure.  Very nice.

Here is the LateLoad definitions for a set of Win32 functions one needs to enumerating running processes and modules across Win32 versions.

LATELOAD_BEGIN_CLASS(CPsApi, PSAPI.DLL, FALSE, FALSE)
  LATELOAD_FUNC_3(FALSE, BOOL, STDAPICALLTYPE,
  EnumProcesses,
DWORD*, DWORD, DWORD*)

LATELOAD_FUNC_4(FALSE, BOOL, STDAPICALLTYPE,
  EnumProcessModules,
HANDLE, HMODULE*, DWORD, LPDWORD)

LATELOAD_FUNC_4(0, DWORD, STDAPICALLTYPE, GetModuleBaseNameA,

HANDLE, HMODULE, LPTSTR, DWORD)

LATELOAD_FUNC_4(0, DWORD, STDAPICALLTYPE, GetModuleFileNameExA,

HANDLE, HMODULE, LPTSTR, DWORD)
LATELOAD_END_CLASS()

LATELOAD_BEGIN_CLASS(CVdmDbg, VDMDBG.DLL, FALSE, FALSE)

LATELOAD_FUNC_3(0, INT, STDAPICALLTYPE, VDMEnumTaskWOWEx,

DWORD, TASKENUMPROCEX, LPARAM)
LATELOAD_END_CLASS()

LATELOAD_BEGIN_CLASS(CKernel32, Kernel32.DLL, FALSE, FALSE)

LATELOAD_FUNC_2(NULL, HANDLE, STDAPICALLTYPE,
  CreateToolhelp32Snapshot,
DWORD, DWORD)

LATELOAD_FUNC_2(FALSE, BOOL, STDAPICALLTYPE,
  Process32First,
HANDLE, LPPROCESSENTRY32)

LATELOAD_FUNC_2(FALSE, BOOL, STDAPICALLTYPE,
  Process32Next,
HANDLE, LPPROCESSENTRY32)
LATELOAD_END_CLASS()
