To work through this demonstration, you need Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003. With Visual Studio .NET, we use the wizards to build a simple, custom Microsoft Windows service that launches Cassini, a managed code Web server that is described in the article, on the local computer. This Web server hosts the research provider consumed by the research task pane in Office 2003 editions. The code samples are provided in Microsoft Visual C# development language.

Old school vs. old school

Old school vs. old school 03/13/2003 10:20 AM

The battle over who created the original old school phone handset for a cellphone is heating up. Both Ali Rahimi and Nik Roope claim to have been the first to create one, something that's a dubious distinction any way you slice it. First Ali shot off an accusation that Nik had engaged in some "player hating," to which Nik responded, "At least where we hail from, 'players' do not typically leave multi sided die on their desktops next to mathematical scribblings." Ouch! Ali, you just lost some hit points there, dude.

“I spent an afternoon recently with Doug Engelbart, talking about making computing history and troubleshooting Doug’s DSL line. Doug, for those who haven’t heard of him, conceived of and then went on to invent much of what we value today in computing from the standpoint of the user. Networks, graphical computing, hypertext, the mouse — Doug’s the guy behind all of those in one way or another. He is best known as the inventor of…

First day of school

First day of school 09/26/2004 10:46 PM

Today was my first day of school. The requirement for getting an university email, intranet and wifi account requires a course in netiquette. The course focused on "don't spread viruses." OK.

I showed up a few minutes late as Professor Takeuchi was talking about how tardiness would not be tolerated. (Sorry Professor Takeuchi!) Strike one. I sat in my student chair feeling very guilty.

Next was the session where we were going to get our accounts.

Instructor A: "So does everyone have have ICS IT Handbook?"

I didn't have one.

Me: "No. I didn't get one. Can I have one?"

Scarier instructor B: "Why don't you have one?"

Me: "I didn't get one. Where do we get one."

Scarier instructor B: "Sit down and share with someone." (scowl)

Me: "Umm.. OK."

So we were instructed on how to log in, change our password, etc. I finished a bit early and was messing around with my profiles. I noticed a place on the intranet where we could upload our picture. I started googling around for a good image to use when...

Scarier instructor B: "Are you following the instructor?"

I had clearly been profiled as a problem student by this point.

I turns out that there are only 3 DBA students and I was the only one attending today so I was put in another class. That's why I didn't have the handbook. Scarier instructor B didn't know this so I guess it's not her fault for scowling. But sitting in a classroom being scolded by instructors brought back a lot of memories. ;-) I'm going to have to get used to it and try to fit in a bit better... for now.

School for Hackers

School for Hackers 08/02/2004 03:55 PM
A presentation on how to be the first to exploit new flaws in Web server software was deemed "just as cool for white hats as for black hats" attending the Defcon 12 conference here over the weekend. The session offered new tools, as well as insight into the mindset of the so-called black hat, or malicious hacker, community, said one enthusiastic attendee, who works for a security consulting company that secures Web servers for the financial sector. The two presenters, German security consultants "FX" and Halvar Flake, spoke about taking advantage of new-found holes, known as zero-day Web-based vulnerability exploitation.

Hacking Advice

Finding vulnerabilities to exploit is real work, the presenters said. The large, packed crowd listened to them talk about "making script kiddies into real hackers," referring to novice hacker wannabes who simply use other hackers' tools to deface Web sites. The pair outlined the procedural steps of drilling down and finding Web server weaknesses--effectively offering tips to those who want to do so, but also providing knowledgeable warning to those who guard against such action.
