AMD makes power play with Turion 03/14/2005 04:02 PM
AMD keeps going…and going…and going. Just like a certain rabbit, they seem bent on producing new chip lines as fast as they can. The obvious winner is the consumer, who gets a wider choice. And more choice is always better. In this case, the new chips will be very welcome, since they’re essentially Athlon64 mobile chips. They have all the speed-throttling and power saving that AMD is well known for plus the power to run…

Card Export II Makes Treo 600 Plug and
Play Storage
07/08/2004 10:40 AM

card_exportgif.jpg imageTreoCentral gives a short, but very positive preview of the latest version of Card Export II, a bit of software that emulates the USB Mass Storage standard that, this time around, lets your Treo 600 plug-and-play with your PC just like a USB flash memory drive. What that means to you is that simply plugging your Treo into any random machine will enable you to copy data back and forth to the SD card without installing any drivers, greatly easing the hassle of just trying to copy a few bits of data off a work or friend's machine. Card Export II is $15 to purchase, but they do have a free trial.

And for what it's worth, Card Export supports many different Palm devices, not just Treos.

d4c51603ae90cd3b713225a970c.jpgIt's going to be 95 degrees—Fahrenheit, you Euro-hippies lovely Europeans [Joel pointed out I'm mean to Europe. It's because I want to go back there so badly. And we always strike out at the things we love, don't we - John]—this weekend so here's a bit of fun for you and your dirty friends. The CO Play and Freeze, which I actually received from some friends, is kind of a soccer ball that makes ice cream. You put ice and salt in the outer ball and a lot of cream and stuff inside the metal canister. Then you kick it around until you get a semi-solid lump of frozen cream stuff. It's a nice little bit DIY although it doesn't store very well and often falls onto my head when I open the closet.

What Do Intranet Searchers Want?

What Do Intranet Searchers Want?
http://www.acmqueue.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid =140

Almost all of the information in an enterprise is unstructured data -- existing in the form of HTML pages, documents in proprietary formats, paper and media objects, etc. As a result, enterprise search differs from Internet search in several important ways. First, on the Internet a user usually seeks the "best" or most relevant document -- whereas on an intranet a searcher is often looking for some specific document that she or he has seen in the past. Second, the Internet reflects the collective voice of many authors -- whereas an intranet typically reflects the view of the organization it serves (and so intranet content is created to disseminate information rather than attract and hold the attention of casual searchers). A third difference is that an Internet search engine is controlled and managed by one organization as a service -- whereas enterprise search software is licensed to and deployed by a variety of organizations in diverse environments, and imposes varying hardware constraints, software platforms, bandwidth, firewalls, heterogeneous content repositories, security models, document formats, user communities, interfaces, and geographic distribution.

Web Searchers Search Around

Web Searchers Search Around 02/17/2004 01:15 PM
Despite conventional wisdom saying that people just use Google for their web searches, a new study suggests that web searchers are not particularly monogamous when it comes to searching. While, yes, most people do use Google, they're not afraid to use other search engines when necessary. Most people tend to use two different search engines on a regular basis. The study suggests that a better search engine doesn't necessarily need to worry so much about prying people away from Google. There's also a ton of people who don't use search at all (who are these people?) - and the study suggests that MSN and Yahoo might want to target these people. On the whole, I'd think that converting a Google searcher may be easier, though, than convincing someone who doesn't bother searching at all why they need to start using a search engine. Still, this does suggest some of the reasons why search engines are suddenly all talking about personalization features to make their search "sticky". If it's customized to you, the theory goes, you'll want to come back. The problem with that theory is that not everyone really wants customized search, and depending on how it's set up, it could end up annoying users more than helping them.

I don't mean to sound all Philip Greenspun (blog), but why don't we see Big Companies outsourcing their CFOs to India or somewhere equally cheap and skilled? What's a CFO, really? The head accountant, bean counter, number cruncher, etc? A growing number of financial analysis jobs are being moved overseas, so why not CFOs? Think of the cash savings! Last time I checked, large corporations pay their CFOs several hundred thousand dollars per year as a base salary. And at...
