FileMaker to Oracle Migration with FmPro
Migrator on Mac OS X
02/17/2004 10:32 PM

David Simpson: "I decided there would be some Mac OS X users interested in migrating their existing FileMaker databases to Oracle. I chose to use AppleScript to obtain detailed information about each open FileMaker database because AppleScript doesn't require any additional configuration by the user. Once I gather enough info to produce a report about the FileMaker database structure, I also have enough info to create table-creation SQL code and Perl migration scripts as well."

Filemaker Pro 7 Review

Filemaker Pro 7 Review 04/18/2004 09:51 AM

FileMaker Pro 7 review by PC Magazine: Here an interesting review of the new FileMaker Pro 7.

Compared with Microsoft Access, FileMaker retains a distinctive edge in usability. Granted, Access has the advantage when it comes to implementing larger-scale applications that have heftier programmatic needs. But Version 7 extends FileMaker's appeal farther into the midrange database space.

I played with this app once, and, true to its Mac roots, it was intuitive and anything and just as easy to use.

I was encouraged to find a few ODBC drivers as well, but if you're going to remove the interface, what's the point? (Maybe not fair — I think there's a legitimate use for data creation and administration via the client app, and publishing to the world via the Web, but that's just me. Use the app to manage to content, then just FTP it up to your server.)

Review: FileMaker Pro 7

Review: FileMaker Pro 7 09/22/2004 12:20 PM
Version 7 of FileMaker's popular flagship product, FileMaker Pro, has something for everyone, including end users who have never defined a field or tweaked a layout, managers who make purchasing decisions, and IT types who support networks and care about security and reliability. But developers -- whether they're in-house, independent, or do-it-yourself -- will be most excited about this release.

”The FileMaker Pro database is out in version 7, and we love it,” write Joy and Bob Schwabach in the Kansas City Star. “FileMaker Pro 7 comes in versions for either Macintosh or Windows, and the two different operating systems can share data back and forth as if they were one. The program can create a database of pictures as well as text and sound, and all of this data can be published directly to the Web if you like (great for instant catalogs).” [May 11]
