A busy weekend in Arizona

A busy weekend in Arizona 02/17/2004 10:29 PM

We've spent the extended weekend in Arizona demoing moblogging and Typepad. The DEMO moblog that we created to document the trip turned out well. I did the bulk of the posting using a Treo 600 and as you can...

I'm in Scottsdale, Arizona today and tomorrow for the Open Source, Open Standards conference. Unfortunately I couldn't make Larry Rosen's talk this morning, but I hope to catch Bruce Perens's this afternoon. I'm speaking tomorrow, but as with Foo Camp, this is the sort of crowd and event where I do a lot more listening than talking.

Very Busy Day

Very Busy Day 02/16/2003 06:26 PM

So yeah, I made some style changes. Many people have commented to me that the new design is too dark. I partially agreed, but I wasn't too bothered by it. Regardless, I decided to see what it would look like lighter. So I made a backup of the stylesheet and played around. I like the results. Along the way, I made the sidebar smaller, because there was too much empty space.

Just in case you despise the new color scheme, the old one is still available. I implemented a style sheet switcher that allows you to set the style you would like for this page. If you'd like, you can set the style back to Dark under the Set Styles heading of the navigation.

Boy I was busy today. I also installed the CurrentlyHearing plugin for Winamp. Everytime I load a song in Winamp, CurrentlyHearing updates a text file on my server with what I am listening too. The result is that I can display what I am listening to on my site in real time, which I have done in the top right corner of the page. I plan on doing more with it eventually but for now it is just displaying the artist and track name.

Bob of Mijnkopthee.nl has set up a really good looking blogroll tool that utilizes my RSS parser. Here is an example of what it does, and here is a loosely translated page of how he did it.

Busy and Behind 12/19/2004 03:44 PM
Two days of travel followed by a full day off site meeting/planning event really takes a toll. I have much catching up to do. Luckily, I'm taking the weekend off from flying to catch up on things before heading back to Ohio for a week. Lots of e-mail to catch up on, feeds to read, and so on. If you're waiting to hear form me, it might be just a bit longer....

I am sorry that I have been silent for a few days, but college is in full swing and the hectic nature of it seems to be gaining day by day. On top of the workload, I'm trying to figure out how to pay for the next couple of semesters. I say this, and you can quote me: Money sucks.

I have enhanced the usability of the undocked portion of Outside Reading. You may now browse all available RSS feeds without having to navigate back to the home page.

Progress on releasing my blogging tool is slow, but I'm getting closer. I appreciate your patience.

On the next episode of My Webhost Sucks: I've been playing email-tag with unnamed support staff for a week now regarding an Apache problem and have thus far received zero help on the issue. The only action they've taken so far was to delete my .htaccess files, thus rendering my site all but inoperable for a few hours. I've been considering Pair as my next webhost, any experience with them? I need a host that allows hosting a number of domains with limited restrictions, which Pair seems to have reasonable policies for.

Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona 04/09/2004 04:11 PM

The first piece of paper they hand out at the visitor's center is a publication from the Sedona Arizona Chamber of Commerce:

"The term vortex was first used in 1980 by psychic and writer Page Bryant to describe Sedona’s four popular meditation sites. …

"According to the scientific point of view, a vortex is an ‘area of enhanced linear energy flow’.  … The scientific perspective proposes that ‘upflow vortexes boost spiritual energy and expansion of consciousness’ while ‘inflow vortexes help one turn inward and enhance introspection.’

"Vortexes are also believed to be one of the reasons those seeking growth and renewal find a welcome home in Sedona."

There seems to be some truth to this because most of the thousands of tourists who throng Sedona every day congregate around the energy sources of the strip malls, linearly arrayed along Highway 89A.  Nonetheless after meeting a large number of Sedonans who profess belief in crystal energy and vortexes it occurred to me to "Thank God these people don’t build cars or airplanes."

It would be nice to send white supremacists on a field trip to Sedona.  New Mexico offers scenery similar to Arizona with a cultural mix of Anglo, Hispanic, and Indian.  Modern-day Sedona seems to have been constructed as a demonstration project for what a city would look like if built and occupied exclusively by Anglo refugees from Los Angeles.

[Oh yes, as suggested by some of the readers here Jerome, AZ was a great place to hang out for a day.]

Innovative Gets Busy!

Innovative Gets Busy! 06/05/2005 11:24 PM

I’m totally snowed under writing grants and dealing with some medical stuff going on at home, but I just had to post about this. Someone forwarded to me Innovative’s June 2005 newsletter (PDF). See if you can spot why from the following list of just a few things they will be introducing in upcoming releases:

  • A program registration module that uses the patron database to let your users register for events.
  • Spell-check for searches in the catalog (let’s add auto suggest, too, eh?).
  • “Patron materials rating,” which is an ugly way of saying user ratings and you can see how others are rating titles. You can also add a reading history module that lets users track what they’ve already read, all of which integrates with the ratings piece.
  • WebBridge “smart” linking, which highlights resources you’ve designated for specific searches when the user runs that search.
  • The ability to link to ebook and audio ebook vendors from the 856 field in AirPAC.
  • Sympsoia, a digital repository module.
  • RSS.

Yep, you read that right – RSS! So the good news is that they are currently beta testing RSS feeds with Yale University, and Innovative seems to understand what they need to offer in terms of feeds.

“Now, Innovative’s RSS (Really Simple Syndication) development will make possible new time-critical features for both anonymous and logged-in users of the online catalog. RSS is an XML format that allows organizations and individuals to feed news data directly into news readers or webpages as it is updated. The XML feed can be converted to HTML for use in a wide variety of contexts.

It is already possible to add these HTML portions with feed data into any library-customizable page in the Web OPAC. With Release 2006LE, available late this year, Innovative customers will have the ability to convert feeds to HTML without using third-party solutions. Also, the library will be able to generate its own feeds of new titles acquired by the library….

Innovative will use RSS to support one-to-many communication, but in Release 2006 there will also be one-to-one support. Patrons will be able to get RSS messages as part of their My Millennium suite of personalization features. Timely messages such as ‘Materials due tomorrow’ or ‘New item on hold shelf for you’ will let patrons know about their interactions with the library more quickly than ever before.”

I am thrilled to hear about all of this, but you also just read the bad news – 2006. That means my SWAN libraries really will lose a minimum of 924 hours of staff time this year after all. Still, they’re heading in the right direction and doing lots of cool stuff, so I tip my hat to III and say job well done!
