Sea Angel or Horny Ass?

Sea Angel or Horny Ass? 01/09/2004 09:56 PM

These things are called Sea Angels (aka Clione Papi Lionacea Pallac) and lives in zero-degree salt water.  Korean parents tell their young that, if they behave badly, horns will grow out of their ass.  Hmm.  I see material for a new folklore here: a story about the offsprings of an angel that fell in love with the devil.

They are born with angel's wings, devil's horns, and an ass where a face should be.  They have to live in dark freezing water because they are ashamed of how they look.  Poor things.  *Sniffle*  Why this could be Disney's next big animation movie.  Oops.  It's time to get back to work because I am now wondering how they would smile...

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets 02/01/2005 10:09 PM

I had to go all the way over to LISNews< /a> to find out that a sister Library System here in Illinois has started a totally awesome project called Libraries Matter. Here at home, our kids saved up some money to buy the 10–pack of Lance Armstrong yellow wristbands because they’re all the rage at school. Can you imagine if we could start something similar with these blue ones for libraries? Brilliant job, Alliance Library System!

One thing, though – how about offering packs smaller than 50 so that ordinary folks like myself can buy some and give them out to friends, kids, etc.? Let’s get some grassroots support going, not just top down from the institutional level! Then, let’s think about how we can use these on Advocacy Day this year.

Tangent: When visiting the ALS web site tonight, I realized they’ve added blogs to the home page (kind of, sort of). Sweet! Unfortunately, no RSS feeds to be found anywhere, which means I won’t be able to add them to my aggregator, which means I’ll have to keep relying on other web sites to highlight ALS projects for me. Not sweet. C’mon, ALS, show us the RSS!

Apple's Unlikely Guardian Angel

Apple's Unlikely Guardian Angel 01/08/2004 07:33 PM
While plenty of other companies, friend and foe alike, abandoned the Mac platform, one firm's support never wavered. And when other companies failed to make products compatible with Macs, this software maker frequently made sure it shipped cross-platform products. In fact, without the backing of this firm, Apple likely would have died. Who is Apple's guardian angel? Well, it's the firm that Mac users most love to hate, the bogeyman of the Mac universe, the one company whose products some Mac fans refuse to use on principle: Microsoft.

Angel Fly Marker: Rasta Edition

Angel Fly Marker: Rasta Edition 09/03/2004 11:48 AM

angel_fly1.jpg imageMy buddy Bryan runs an X-TREM SPORTZ store down in Brandon, Florida and won't shut up about his new Angel Fly marker (what paintballers call their guns so people won't think they're all crazed killers). Apparently there was some special edition model called the "Rasta" that they only made 150 of, and despite the fact that Bryan doesn't even eat anything green, let alone smoke it, he somehow had to have it. So I told him to write up a little bit about it, because when he started telling me about all the things it could do, I couldn't believe it, like communicating with other markers over IR, using optical sensors to check for ball clearance, built in temperature measurements and timers... leave it the hardcore to turn a perfectly good tactical simulation into something supremely dorked out.

Bryan's impressions are after the jump. He gives manufacturer WDP a long, luxurious hand job, but I think it's just because he's trying to make us jealous (or maybe he is finally using milled aluminum pipes for their greater, more Jah purpose).

Fixing the world of Angel Investing

Fixing the world of Angel Investing 06/17/2005 04:08 PM

I’ve been working closely with the DaVinci Institute on some of its entrepreneurial efforts, and recently had a chance to interview Kevin Johansen, the sharp and charismatic head of the Entrepreneurial Standards Forum, about the world of angel investing and how it could be significantly improved. It’s a long interview, but darn interesting for anyone who’s ever thought about raising capital… Q: I think that historically angel investing has been not just erratic and characterized…

Angel siteThis is the site of one of the most intriguing experiments I've seen in the technology arena. A team of talented people from government, NGOs and the private sector has assembled on a lava bed on Hawaii's Big Island for an exercise designed to push the limits of communications and collaboration in a harsh environment, such as the aftermath of a disaster (whether human-made, i.e. war, or natural). The project is called Strong Angel II, led by a Navy doctor named Eric Rasmussen. I did a column about this a few weeks ago, and now Rasmussen and his group are putting the plans into action. These are the kind of people who make me feel especially humble.

Navy Tries Out Vocera

Navy Tries Out Vocera 12/16/2003 01:42 PM
Crew on the USS Coronado are trialing Vocera's Wi-Fi badges: I know that hospitals and other organizations are already using the system from Vocera but I just don't see it. Depending on what the Navy wants to use them for, this sounds like a recipe for disaster. What if it's noisy and the badge can't pick up the user's command to dial someone? I'm still very cautious about anything that uses voice recognition because I've yet to see anything that works well....

Navy Loses an AUV

Navy Loses an AUV 05/07/2004 01:34 PM
Noah Shackman noticed a Canadian Press report saying that the Navy can't seem to find their Battlespace Preparation Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (PDF format). The bright yellow BPAUV weighs 800 pounds, is 122 inches long, 21 inches in diameter and was last seen off the coast of Norway where it was taking part in a military exercise. The BPAUV was built by Bluefin Robotics where you can find more photos and video of the robot sub. The Navy's highly automated and futuristic-looking HSV-2 Swift vessel is still out looking for the little lost robot.
