The Ten Year Meme

The Ten Year Meme 03/14/2005 06:21 PM
Ten years ago I was mostly not studying very hard at the Helsinki University of Technology. On a whim I decided to apply for a scholarship to CERN, and got granted one! So I spent a warm summer in Geneva, learning once and for all that education does not a smart person make, nor do brains make them nice. My mother turned 50, and I spent the party glued to a coin telephone in the empty main hall of CERN.

Five years ago I snuffed my academic career, having gotten tired of the university world, and switched my career plans from PhD? to Java Consultant. This job took me later that year to Melbourne, Australia - a place which I still remember fondly as one of the great times of my life. The industry was in a slump, so I didn't have that many paying jobs, and ended up hanging around in the office most of the time. But it still was great.

Three years ago I had returned from Australia, switched jobs again (to my present position), separated from my girlfriend, and bought a new apartment. My career seemed to be going up, and I was really developing at go. But I had heard of this cool stuff called Wikis and weblogs, and I had started publishing with my own wiki engine...

One year ago I was busily arranging the Finnish Blog Awards, bringing me questionable fame, and dating someone who taught me a lot. I've not regretted it since, and I'm still proud to call her a friend. Also I had not released JSPWiki 2.2, despite many promises. My go career also went to a slump I haven't been able to recover from.

This year I have been working hard, as usual. I've lost a friend, but gained a room mate (and about ten cubic metres of stuff).

Yesterday I got commended for my work. It was satisfying to see others liking our work so much, they wanted to present it onwards. In the evening, I fully demonstrated that I don't know Jack Schitt in a pub quiz.

Today I stroke gently the forehead of the cooling body of my grandmother, as she passed away literally five minutes before I got to the hospital.

Tomorrow I will wake up tired, and spend the day in meetings, traveling back and forth, and feeling even more tired.

I've lost track of who started this meme, but I've seen it all over the place. So what the hell, I'll play along:

  1. Grab the nearest book.
  2. Open the book to page 23.
  3. Find the fifth sentence.
  4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

Meme propagation tracking

Meme propagation tracking 08/01/2004 11:18 PM

My previous entry is an entry into Nova Spivack’s meme tracking experiment. Although you enter by copying his entry to your blog and changing the text, it’s not the same thing as Friday Five or other such silliness. The idea is to study how an idea spreads around the Web from a single blog posting.

To help track the spread, there’s a GUID that can be used to search Google. Theoretically, any page containing that GUID will be an entry into the project, but it is likely that someone will poison the results by putting the GUID elsewhere. It’s also likely that someone will link to the project without participating. This helps spread the meme but would not include the GUID.

On the individual archive page for this entry, powered by the Technorati API and MTTechnorati, there’s a list of the last 25 links to the main project page. The Technorati list would include links from all blogs tracked by Technorati, whether they include the GUID or not.

I gave many a presentation at Be-Ins - including a live MediaBand gig at the Mariner's Hall one year.  Let's see that must have been '93 or '94.

Anyway - Bruce Eisner is helping to spread the meme and get folks contributing to the flow.  Discussions going on at the Be-In Tribe.

Emma Goldman meme spreading? 03/14/2003 01:41 AM
After seeing the Emma Goldman quote, "In the face of this approaching disaster, it behooves men and women not yet overcome by war madness to raise their voice of protest, to call the attention of the people to the crime and outrage about to be perpetrated on them." for the first time last week on the window of the Cheeseboard in Berkeley, I adopeted it for my personal sig and and posted it here. Since then, I've seen it on other websites and as sigs to several people's emails on several email lists that I am on. I can only hope that it is a spreading meme, and that more people will feel compelled to speak out....

BoingBoing reader Rob Annable posted this curious item about a song featured in a BoingBoing post -- that crazy "Rodeohead" bluegrass parody of Radiohead. It traveled from BoingBoing to Rob's blog to John Peel's show on BBC Radio 1. That's interesting, but what's really interesting is the fact that the BBC's legendary DJ told Rob the BBC can't play MP3s. Link (Thanks, JP)

Testing Meme Propagation In Blogspace:
Add Your Blog!
08/01/2004 09:27 PM

This posting is a community experiment started by Minding the Planet to see how a meme represented by a blog posting spreads across blogspace, physical space and time. It will help to show how ideas travel across blogs in space and time and how blogs are connected. It may also help to show which blogs are most influential in the propagation of memes. The original posting for this experiment is located at: Minding the Planet; results and commentary will appear there in the future.

Please join the test by adding your blog (see instructions, below) and inviting your friends to participate — the more the better. The data from this test will be public and open; others may use it to visualize and study the connectedness of blogspace and the propagation of memes across blogs.

SalemOpen.Net will launch shortly using Michael Oh's model--and support--for establishing commercially supported free Internet access over Wi-Fi: In an interview last week, Michael Oh outlined the new network in Salem, Mass., that will launch in the next few days. The network involves the sponsorship of a local bank and participation by a number of merchants. Oh says that SalemOpen.Net is a proof of concept that the Newbury Street model he developed for putting Wi-Fi access hand in hand with business development can be "franchised." "It's incredible to actually be on a street and drive around for three hours and find 2,200 access points, and see that only 12 of them are public, free or paid," Oh said. The commercial free networks that Oh has helped build take advantage of the growing necessity of Internet access for people in all walks of life and the built-in nature of Wi-Fi in virtually all new laptops. SalemOpen.Net's motivation comes in part from the desire of the 40,000-person town to have a year-round economy not based in the run-up to Halloween, and events that recall witch trials over 300 years ago. Oh said that some residents live there because of the mystique--"24 by 7 Goths"--but the community at large "would like to say we're more than just a Halloween tourist attraction or a place to go during the summer to see some interesting witch museums." Oh said, the network is "a way of trying to attract businesses to Salem Center, to attract more people from the fringes of that area." He noted, "Literally in that area, there's nothing like that." The nearby North Shore Mall has an Apple Store with free Wi-Fi, but he said that's practically the only open access. In an email follow-up, Oh noted that a small project in nearby Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to offer free Wi-Fi illustrated his point about the attactiveness of wireless access. "Free WiFi can give an entire area an advantage over the 'big city'--cheaper parking, lower rent, and free Wi-Fi," he wrote. "I think that's an important trend--and you could see free Wi-Fi gelling more effectively in small towns first, even though there are more users for it in cities." This was the logic that drove Monet Mobile to offer high-speed cellular wireless data service in more rural areas unserved or underserved by wired DSL and cable broadband. The company filed for bankruptcy in April after...

Latest Online Meme: Selling Your Ability
To Party
11/10/2003 11:00 PM
Let's see... Flashmobs are dead and buried. Online begging has reached the pointless stage (a book has already been written!). It's time for a new overhyped web-meme to flood the world. It looks like we've got a strong candidate in a bunch of women using eBay to sell their own presence (and a case of beer) to liven up any party. After a ton of publicity, they managed to get a top bid of 25,050 euros (about $40,700). The women admit that they believe the winner is a company looking to use the party for publicity, realizing that the media is likely to show up. Meanwhile, like any such web-meme, others are jumping on the bandwagon and trying to sell their own ability to party. However, like most such things, the ones who do it first are the only ones likely to generate enough publicity to make it worthwhile. Though, if it catches on even slightly, I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of articles about the "trend".

Remember the string of earlier posts on BoingBoing about restaurants serving sushi on the bodies of clothes-free hotties? The owner of a Japanese restaurant in the Chinese city of Kunming had the same idea:
The Hefengcun Huaishi restaurant launched a promotional "feast on a beauty's body," for local journalists last Friday, hiring two attractive fair-skinned college girls to lie on tables, with sushi and other food and flowers placed on their bare bodies covered with thin gauze. The reports caused a firestorm in the local and national press with many readers slamming the novel dining trend as offensive and insulting to women.(...) Known as "Nyotai Mori" in Japan, the feasts date back to ancient times and are often offered in special hotspring resorts today, but are generally left off menus. They are offered to aficionados on request.
