The Active Awards are held annually to honor members of the open source community who actively contribute to open source languages and display excellence in their programming efforts. Programmers' Choice Award winners were nominated and chosen by the open source community. Activators' Choice Award winners were chosen by ActiveState's development team. This year's nominees were: Monte Ohrt, Paul S. Owen, Stanislav Malyshev, Stig Bakken and Wez Furlong. The Programmers' Choice winner is Stig Bakken, the father of PEAR. Adobe's Jim Heeger kicked off the second annual Mac Design Conference on Wednesday with a keynote that challenged attendees to "define great design" and featured a demonstration of the company's Adobe Creative Suite line of graphic design applications. The same morning, four professionals received their acrylic 2004 Mac Design Crabby Awards for creative achievement in five categories. Michael Bast won for Best of Show and Illustration, David Cuerdon for Photography, Todd Adkins for Print, and Brian Frank for Web Design. As MacCentral posted this article, the Mac Design Web site had not yet been updated with current keynote and Crabby Awards information. The Mac Design Conference runs through June 4 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Chicago.

We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.

MoveOn's Bush-in-30-Second campaign has announced its winners. They are in four categories, and each is brilliantly done. I hope the same is done by the other side, when the Democrats finally find a candidate. Because what's great about this is that it marks the real beginning of iPolitics -- bottom-up media made real. Citizen- bloggers and digital media -- when Madison finally returns to "Madison Avenue." I understand that RNC is confused about the nature of this campaign. No doubt the folks responsible for the RNC ghost-written letters to the editor were sure that there could only be a media effort if it was controlled and directed from the top, so that when 2 out of the thousand entries (not 2 out of the 15 finalists) mentioned Hitler, they thought that MoveOn must have sponsored that message. But now that that confusion has been cleared up, I hope they too will enlist the public to make the President's message clear. If they do, we've got the tools to help spread the messages far.
