Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-050:
Vulnerability in Microsoft Word and
Microsoft Excel Could Allow Arbitrary
Code to Run (831527)
11/13/2003 12:36 AM
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed. If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding, changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or formatting the hard drive.

“The random chatter of several hundred Microsoft engineers filled the cavernous executive briefing center recently at the company’s sprawling campus outside Seattle. Within minutes after their meeting was convened, however, the hall became hushed. Hackers had successfully lured a Windows laptop onto a malicious wireless network. “It was just silent,” said Stephen Toulouse, a program manager in Microsoft’s security unit. “You couldn’t hear anybody breathe.” ” [Continue reading Microsoft asks for help from hackers]…

The 15 May 2004 theft and publishing of the source code for Cisco's IOS router firmware could mean a wave of exploits against the critical router infrastructure of the Internet will be on its way. If that happens, it will be because Cisco ignored one of the iron rules of network security -- and experts the world over will be muttering "if only IOS had been open source."

Cisco Source Code Thief Arrested in
England
09/19/2004 09:28 AM
A 20-year old man was arrested in England on September 3rd for the alleged theft of proprietary source code used by Cisco Systems. No formal charges have been brought against the man (who's identity has still not beed released) as of yet and he was released on bail.

The source code in question contained about 800 megabytes of data pertaining to Cisco's Internetwork Operating System and appeared on a Russian Web site last May. It was quickly removed at Cisco's request. Cisco has claimed that the theft was not the result of a software or service vulnerability.

Both the FBI and Scotland Yard are investigating the theft and working together on the investigation. A statement released by Cisco last friday stated, "We have and are continuing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and we are encouraged that an arrest has been made. We view the arrest as what will likely be many steps in this matter, and we will take every measure to protect vigorously our intellectual property."
