Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

bluetooth.jpgThe Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word, however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.

.Pro problems

.Pro problems 04/08/2005 10:13 AM

As people have reported widely, there has been a great deal of abuse of .Pro. .Pro was supposed to be a top level domain dedicated to creating a credentialed area for verified professionals and profession related domain names. People have been registering obviously unrelated domains and going as far as selling them on eBay. This clearly violates the spirit of the agreement, but it is still unclear whether anyone is technically violating the agreement. ICANN has been criticized for not policing .PRO especially in light of ICANN approving new sponsored top level domains. As Michael Palage pointed out in his comments during the board meeting, ICANN staff is currently investigating the issues and they will come back with the facts and the board will discuss any appropriate actions.

Free Wi-Fi Problems 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

Cafes find Wi-Fi boom unsettling: Having free wi-fi in your cafe isn't always a good thing.

[...] there was also a disadvantage, staff members said: The cafe filled up with laptop users each weekend, often one person to a table for four. Some would sit for eight hours purchasing a single drink, or nothing at all.

Even worse, when lingerers were confronted, they were bellicose. "We get yelled at by people who feel it's their right" to use Victrola's Wi-Fi without buying anything, Strongin said. Tony Konecny, the shop's head roaster, added, "It's rarely a pleasant interaction."

I was having some problems with Mail.app
and it's ...
10/31/2003 07:24 PM

I was having some problems with Mail.app and it's handling of cached IMAP folders. When I would delete all of the messages in a folder, then when I tried to view new messages it would still display old messages that I had deleted from the server. The issue seemed to be that the folders were missing the "special" message that is in all IMAP folders. I had been using mutt and procmail for quite some time before I switched to IMAP, hence none of my folders had the special message that helps keep IMAP clients on the straight and narrow. So if you are seeing odd caching bugs, try deleting the folder and re-creating it through the Mail.app interface, especially if they were just procmail mbox files.

PSP Pixel Problems

PSP Pixel Problems 03/28/2005 04:06 PM

As I mentioned here last week, the PSP debut has brought with it a relatively large group of complaints about dead pixels on the screens. They range from a single pixel to whole rows or columns of dead pixels. Anandtech has posted a response from Sony about the dead pixels. It’s a generic type response, but worth reading..

The Sony rep suggested that PSP owners who encounter the pixel issue should try the device "for a week or two" to see if it continues to bother them. "If you find the spots are interfering with gameplay/video viewing during this period, we will support the various elements of [the PSP] warranty," the rep said. Each PSP comes with a one-year limited warranty, which is on page 125 of the PSP manual. If a PSP is "determined to be defective" by SCEA, the company will see to the "repair or replacement of this product [the PSP] with a new or refurbished product at SCEA's option."

How Many Problems Does Spyware Cause?

How Many Problems Does Spyware Cause? 04/26/2004 11:53 AM
While most of this article covers standard ground about anti-spyware legislations and software programs (though, oddly, it does not mention the two most popular spyware programs: AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy), at the very beginning it notes two interesting tidbits on the impact of spyware. Dell claims that 12% of their calls now involve questions about spyware (meaning it's good that Dell has changed their "don't talk about spyware" policy) while Microsoft claims that 50% of PC crashes are actually due to spyware. While this might seem like a convenient out for Microsoft (whose machines certainly crashed plenty in the time before spyware), it does indicate just how troublesome spyware is on many computers. The worst part isn't just the problems it causes, but the fact that most users have no idea that it's even on their machines at all.

Gmail Problems

Gmail Problems 04/30/2004 12:02 PM
Brad of The BradLands reports that Google will give access to your Gmail account to anyone who can answer your secret question, and since most people's secret question is something easily discoverable (mother's maiden name, pet, etc.), this isn't very good news. On the other hand, as Matt and Brad point out, most other services (Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, etc.) have the same problem. So if you do use Gmail, do pick a more difficult challenge question. On a more uplifting note, Brad notes that Gmail is starting to work decently with Safari now, if you click past the your browser is unsupported screen by hitting "sign in anyway". And Dane Carlson notes the suspicious potential beginnings of a Google Blog (look at the URL)....

Problems with XCode 1.5

Problems with XCode 1.5 08/23/2004 06:54 AM
In the past few days, there have been reports that some fink packages do not compile correctly using XCode 1.5. If you have not already upgraded to XCode 1.5, we suggest that you wait until this issue is resolved before doing so. If you are having problems with a package which compiled under XCode 1.2 but does not compile correctly under XCode 1.5, please report the package to the fink-devel mailing list. (The usual symptom is: some symbols are missing after compiling with g++.) Packages already known to have this problem include octave, singular-factory, singular-libfac, and possibly sdl.
