Post-Election Thought: Democrats should

Post-Election Thought: Democrats should
have picked someone from business
12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Despite widespread dissatisfaction with George W. Bush the Democrats managed to lose the 2004 election.  The U.S. has a population growth rate of 0.92% (source: CIA Factbook) and our population is forecast to reach 450 million by mid-century.  Thus economic (GDP) growth and job creation are essential if Americans are to enjoy a constant or rising standard of living.  Bush and Cheney weren't our most successful business managers but they at least did work in the business world, attempting to produce economic growth and jobs.  The Democrats picked challengers who spent their entire lives working for the government or suing medical doctors for causing cerebral palsy.  These are activities that may redistribute the pie but won't grow it.  Edwards might have been a particular weakness on this score because of the studies showing that lawyers reduce GDP.

Does anyone know of a governor or national Democratic politician who previously had a successful career in business?

Is Yahoo Back In The Porn Business?

Is Yahoo Back In The Porn Business? 11/19/2003 08:10 AM
A few years ago, a bored reporter was surfing around Yahoo and noticed that within their market place area you could buy pornographic DVDs (though, in a well marked section that was clearly not for kids) and that for certain search terms, Yahoo was returning advertisements for porn websites. Now, we won't ask how this reporter "just happened" to stumble across this information, but his article sent the groups that get concerned about such things into a tizzy and they threatened Yahoo with all sorts of bad publicity. Yahoo backed down and removed the DVDs and the banner ads. Now, however, with their purchase of Overture, it turns out they're back in the porn ad selling business, and are hoping that the same groups that spent so much time and effort protesting a few years ago won't notice. Now, personally, I have no problems with Yahoo selling whatever they want, so long as it isn't illegal, but it will be interesting to see (a) if anyone cares this time around and (b) if Yahoo backs down again.

Ed Yourdon Back In The Doom And Gloom
Business

Ed Yourdon Back In The Doom And Gloom
Business
10/30/2003 11:46 PM
Ed Yourdon made quite a name for himself in the late 90s predicting that the Y2K problem was going to bring about the end of society. He sold a ton of books and videos based on his fear mongering statements that the lights would turn out at midnight on January 1st, 2000. After that didn't happen, he seemed to lay low for a bit, but now he's back predicting that American jobs are being lost forever overseas. Now, there's quite a valid debate over offshoring issues, but seeing Yourdon's track record of raising a big stink to sell lots of books about a problem that didn't pan out, I'd take it with a pretty large grain of salt. He seems to like to take a simple case and extrapolate it out, without considering how other issues may impact what actually happens. Yes, there are issues that the US needs to deal with concerning outsourcing, but the doom and gloom scenarios are counterproductive. Already there are signs that things like the famed Indian call centers aren't as great as they were made out to be and additional evidence suggesting that offshor ing creates additional costs for companies. Certainly, this is an issue that companies need to be aware of, but we have to look at the issue in context, and not just assume that because a job offshore is cheaper it really means that all US jobs are gone.

09/21/2004 12:29 PM
About a year ago, we wrote about a guy who was selli ng mobile phone jammers to hotels in Scotland -- where such devices weren't exactly legal. The guy had fine print on his website saying that the devices may not be legal, but failed to indicate that most of his customers were pretty obviously breaking the law. Well, now he's back. He's getting ready to launch a new website selling the devices again, but insists that this time he'll only sell them into countries where they're legal such as France. However, he still insists he's completely innocent of any criminal behavior, noting that selling the devices is perfectly legal. It's just using them that's illegal.

“Five pounds sterling (about $9) is all it took for Stockholm-based Pointsec Mobile Technologies, a data encryption vendor, to buy a laptop on eBay which still contained, it says, the access codes needed to gain administrator rights to ‘the secure intranet of one of Europe’s largest financial services groups.’ As part of an experiment to see how well companies protect information on their laptops, Pointsec purchased laptops at Internet and public auctions—including auctions of laptops lost and never reclaimed in airports, or turned into police stations—in Britain, Germany, Sweden, and the United States. Of the 100 laptops acquired, the company was able to read information on 7 out of 10 hard disks, sometimes using easily available or off-the-shelf password cracking tools.”

Re: ETA?. Posted by: Randy

How is that possible? Let's say user A has friends B and C on network X. Now A wants to move to network Y. B already exist in network Y, but C doesn't. Are we going to setup C on network Y?

Just wondering. [Tribe.net: FOAF]

Randy is asking about our FOAFnet spec.

Here's how it would work......

User A imports B....Z into Y.  Y comes back and lists out his friends in three lists: [those who are already in Y], [those who aren't and who's email is availabel for auto-registration] and [those who don;t have emails available.]

In addition each human has an export control checkbox - which defaulted off.  So if they want or are willing to be exported they have to check the checkbox.  Explicit permission.

Xbox 2 Specs?

Xbox 2 Specs? 03/14/2005 04:34 PM
Gamespy has released a list of features on the upcoming Xbox2 or Xbox 360 as it's been referred to. Their spy on the inside tells them that details may still change as the development continues. Here's what they say it will look like,

CPU - Xenon's CPU has three 3.0 GHz PowerPC cores. Each core is capable of two instructions per cycle and has an L1 cache with 32 KB for data and 32 KB for instructions. The three cores share 1 MB of L2 cache. Alpha 2 developer kits currently have two cores instead of three.

GPU - Xenon's GPU is a generation beyond the ATI X800. Its clock speed is 500 MHz and it supports Shader 3.0. Developers are currently working with an alpha 2 GPU. Beta GPU units are expected by May and the final GPU is slated for a summer release. The final GPU will be more powerful than anything on the market today; in game terms, it would handle a game like Half-Life 2 with ease.

System Memory - Xenon will have 256 MB of system RAM. Keep in mind that this number should not be equated to typical PC RAM. The Xbox has 64 MB of system RAM and is a very capable machine.

Optical Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X.

Memory Units - Xenon will use 64 MB to 1,024 MB memory cards. 8 MB is reserved for system use, leaving a 56 MB to 1,016 MB for user data.

Hard Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon's hard drive is optional. 2 GB of the drive will be used as game cache. The final drive size is still being determined.

Camera - Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. It's unknown if the Xenon camera will allow for Eye-Toy-like gameplay. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver.

Sound Chip - Xenon does not have an audio chip in the traditional sense. Decompression is handled by hardware, while the rest of the chores are handled by software. DirectSound3D has been dropped in favor of X3DAudio. The former was deemed too inflexible.
