Hardware manufacturers priced new notebooks based on the Intel Centrino mobile technology starting at $1,399, but the utility of the new architecture is limited by its inability to use high speed Wi-Fi systems.

HP opts to not use Centrino for professional models: HP is worried about corporate customers who don't want built-in obsolescence through built-in wireless. They'd rather offer interchangeable cards. They will use the Pentium-M, though, which the author of this piece implies is a different piece of technology. HP will introduce 802.11a, b, and g through an Atheros module in mini-PCI format in May. A consumer Centrino will follow in June.

According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. Intel to announce 'Napa' Centrino 3 at
IDF?
08/27/2004 01:56 PM
Intel hasn't even shipped 'Sonoma', the second generation of its Centrino mobile platform yet, but it may well announce the third-generation at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) next month. So claim unnamed sources cited by DigiTimes. The site's article refers what we'll call 'Centrino 3' as "a notebook-use dual-core processor, codenamed 'Napa', slated for launch in the first quarter of 2006".

Napa is actually the successor to Sonoma, and is believed to be the platform that will incorporate the dual-core Pentium M, 'Yonah'; a new chipset, 'Callistoga'; and Intel's next-gen. wireless solution 'Gaston'. Yonah is essentially two 'Dothan' cores plus a whole heap of shared L2 cache. Callistoga appears to be a beefed up version of 'Alviso', the 'Grantsdale'-like mobile chipset that's due to appear in Q1 2005. Callistoga is said to provide Alviso's 533MHz frontside bus, PCI Express support, Hi-Def audio and 667MHz DDR 2, but with Serial ATA II.

A year on from Napa, Intel is apparently lining up 'Santa Rosa', with a new dual-core Pentium M, 'Merom'; chipset, 'Crestine'; and wireless component, 'Gaston 2'. Merom may introduce HyperThreading to Pentium M line, but will at least represent the next generation of core beyond Dothan.

Can't Get Longer Battery Life, So How
About Faster Charges?

Can't Get Longer Battery Life, So How
About Faster Charges?
03/29/2005 05:32 PM
One of the biggest issues holding back portable technologies is the battery life question. While computing power seems to increase rapidly, battery power has been unable to keep up. While there are many efforts underway to improve battery life, most don't measure up (unless you want to increase the risk that your battery might explode). Fuel cells don't appear to be the answer either. However, just because you can't increase battery life, it doesn't mean other improvements can't be made. Decre asing power consumption is one area that is getting plenty of attention, but the rechargeable nature of batteries is another interesting space. Toshiba has announced a new technology which they claim can charge batteries much faster. They claim this technology only requires a one minute charge to get a battery up to 80% power -- which could go a long way to solving certain battery life problems. If you can just do a quick "power up," then many other issues are less noticeable. Still, there aren't many details about this new technology, and lots of stuff in labs (and press releases) don't seem to act quite the same way in the real world (assuming they actually reach the real world).

Keyboard with 512k of memory, 700h
battery life
08/31/2004 01:55 PM
Cory Doctorow: The AlphaSmart Neo is a full-sized keyboard with a little LCD screen on the top. It acts as a word-processor, letting you type into its 512k cache while it draws power from 3 AA batteries. When you get back to your Mac or PC, you just dump the text over USB or IR. The thing runs for 700 hours on a 3 AA batts and costs $250, and weighs about 2 lbs.

My only complaint about this thing is the storage: 512k? I know that's a whole novel and then some, but geez, flash-RAM is so cheap now -- why not just give it a SD slot and I could use an old 64MB card from my last camera? Link (via Engadget)

Update: Chris Taylor points out that AlphaSmart has a model that supports memory cards -- and it comes with WiFi and PalmOS.

220_mp3.jpg imagePanasonic's new "SL-CT820" has the world's longest battery life for MP3/CD players: 220 hours.

As you would imagine, there are a couple technicalities to this figure. First of all, you need to be playing WMA files; your maximum battery life with MP3 is 210 hours. (Oh damn). You also need to use one of those external batteries - you know, the ones you somehow connect with a cable to the CD player. But even if you choose not to, you still get a 130 hour playback time of MP3 audio. Pretty swell, considering even the latest hard drive-based players get, what, 20-some hours of playback?

Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG: It Just Rolls

01/16/2004 11:01 AM
Intel releases its 802.11g Centrino module: The fully standards complaint, Wi-Fi certified 802.11g (and thus backwards compatible to 802.11b) mini-PCI module sells for $25 in quantities of 10,000 or more, according to the press release, and will appear in upcoming revisions to laptops from major makers. It supports WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access); current Centrino B adapters only support WPA for manufacturers who have integrated updated drivers. What I was told last year during the Intel launch was that businesses of a certain scale work on a three-year purchasing cycle. Dell offered their own Broadcom-based 802.11g adapter to remain competitive because companies that had decided to go with 802.11g during 2003 wouldn't be coming back to the trough to buy more machines until 2006, and Dell would have left that business on the table. Intel is finally able to belly up to the bar, but they really did leave a market moment open for Broadcom and others. Companies that have standardized on Broadcom's solution, even indirectly via Dell or others, won't now switch in their 2004 cycle for new machines to Intel's module because that would mean that they would have heterogenous hardware to support. The flip side is that many companies waited on 802.11g: the enterprise versions of G access points didn't start shipping until long after the first consumer wave, and thus there was no benefit to having G....
