Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Kevin Werbach comments on Jeff Pulver's worries about the FCC regulating voice-over-Internet technology:
As I said at the FCC VOIP hearing last week, the real issue is the transformation from the Internet as a subset of telecom to telecom as a subset of the Internet. That means treating voice as an application that can run on any platform, not as the platform itself.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. A New Telecom Act?

A New Telecom Act? 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
An article yesterday in Total Telecom confirms what I've been saying for some time: the Telecommunications Act of 1996 is due for a rewrite.

"I think it is inevitable that we will see a new bill," said Bill Bailey, senior counsel for the Senate Commerce Committee."

I also seem to have guessed right on the likely time frame for the new Act: 2010 or so.  With all the money at stake, it will take years for a bill to make it through Congress.  Better late than never. The current legal framework in the US is so out of step with the real world that it must be reformed.

Recent developments underline that troubles aren't over for these companies.

Telecom Thinkability

Telecom Thinkability 02/01/2005 09:33 PM

Back when I was at the FCC, then-Chairman Reed Hundt famously torpedoed a rumored BellSouth-AT&T deal by calling it "unthinkable" for regulators. Now comes word that SBC, one of the other Bell companies, is in serious talks to acquire AT&T.

We'll see. The industry has changed a lot in the past few years, but I'm still skeptical something like this will actually happen. Given the p rogress AT&T has made in transforming itself into a data-centric company, it would also be a bit of a shame if it were swallowed up by one of the Bells. On the regulatory side, much may depend on who replaces Michael Powell at the FCC. It won't be an antitrust crusader, of course, but in this game, degrees of emphasis matter.
