RFID tags in Benetton clothing

RFID tags in Benetton clothing 03/13/2003 10:24 AM
Benetton is buying 15 million RFID (radio frequency identification) tags to attach to the labels in their clothing as an anti-theft measure. People are freaked out (again) about privacy issues, but the reality (at least today) is that the range of RFID tech is too short for someone to drive by your house and scan your closet. Still, it does make sense to zap the tags out of commission once items are paid for. Link Discuss

Spammer Launches Clothing Line?

Spammer Launches Clothing Line? 04/19/2004 05:45 PM
In what seems like it should be a late April Fool's joke, well known spammer Scott Richter seems to have changed his tune a bit on claiming that his company is in the permission marketing, rather than spamming, business. After getting accused by various companies and the Attorney General of New York of being one of the biggest spammers out there, Richter has decided to launch his own brand of "SpamKing" clothing. Try not to gag as you read about the clothes (targeting "the hip-hop, grunge and skateboarding crowds") will include such catchy phrases as "Just Opt Out!" and "Click it!" Not surprisingly, he plans to spam people like crazy to promote the clothing. In the meantime, the article notes (more seriously) that Richter also plans to file lawsuits against anti-spam groups for stopping his "legitimate" messages. Considering that previous lawsuits like this haven't gone very far, it's likely that any lawsuit he files will also be an annoying waste of time for anti-spam groups (just like spam itself).

Scott Richter, one of the original Big Name Spammers, has decided to augment his email marketing biz with a line of SpamKing clothing.
Richter said the line, initially hats, shirts and panties, will be aimed at the hip-hop, grunge and skateboarding crowds. It will feature sayings such as "Just opt out," and "Click it."

Xeni Jardin: Snip from Theater News item:
John Malkovich, the renowned stage and screen actor, is also the designer of the Uncle Kimono clothing line -- and he will showcase his autumn/winter 2005-2006 men's wear collection at a trunk sale to be held at The Performing Garage (33 Wooster Street) in SoHo on Saturday, April 16, from 10am to 5pm. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit The Wooster Group.

(...) According to Malkovich, "Uncle Kimono is a men's wear collection that resonates with the late 1950s Californian beach boys, some Palm Springs Rat Pack, a touch of lounge lizard, and a recollection of a Swiss banker who's been let go."

A few months ago I was out having sushi with some pals in West Hollywood, and a very dapper Mr. Malkovich sat down at an adjacent table with friends. He was dressed in an extremely funky-fresh outfit, so this news comes as no surprise. He is one stylin' guy. Link to news report, and here is John Malkovich's website. Site also includes some pretty cool t-shirts, like the one shown above, but yow -- they're $70 a pop. (via blogging.la)

Smart Clothing

Smart Clothing 08/09/2004 11:08 AM

francetelecom5.jpg imageDavid Pescovitz has a nice round-up of the current state of 'smart clothes,' or "computer couture" as he's calling it - textiles that do fun or intelligent or useful things, like dispense medicines, keep themselves clean, and display Pac-Man ghosts via Bluetooth. We've talked about a lot of this stuff before, but it's still neat to see them all sort of next to each other. Too bad smart fabrics have been just on the cusp of production for years and years. I'd be happy with just a shirt I could change the logo on.

It looks like Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - news - research) has cried wolf too many times. Investors shrugged off the software behemoth's conservative outlook for 2005, bidding up the stock Friday in the wake of the firm's strong top- and bottom-line third-quarter results. After all, many noted, Microsoft gave similarly conservative guidance a year ago -- only to prove itself wrong with revenue growth on track to reach an impressive 13% this year. On Friday, Microsoft shares jumped $1.59, or 6.1%, to $27.54 with more than 255 million shares changing hands -- about four times its average daily volume.

Motorola V3 Razr is Hot

Motorola V3 Razr is Hot 09/02/2004 09:48 AM

razer_yankees_sm.jpg imageHey, is that a picture of me holding the new Motorola V3 RAZR phone at last night's Yankee's game? Why yes, it is! Is it also proof of my inability to use the Fuji F440 I'm reviewing to focus on something in the foreground? Why, it's that, too!

I didn't get a chance to mess around with it for long - it isn't mine for review, sadly, but someone from another magazine - but boy oh boy is that one sexy phone. It's almost sort of big when you look at it from the front, but then you close it and look at its profile and go all sort of knock-kneed. And that flat metal keypad is heart, too. It's a very nice phone, at least from the want to sort of rub it all over sense.

The gold game is pretty fun, too.

motov3raz.jpg imageMobile-Review has a breakdown of the new Motorola V3 "Razor" phone, an almost all-metal clamshell that surprisingly doesn't forego a lot of features to reach its tiny size. Similar in function to the v600, the titanium-clad V3 is still fairly wide, but manages to remain less than 14mm thin in profile even with lots of built-in features (like Bluetooth).

To launch this September between $650 and $750, this spiritual successor to the StarTac is yet another hot phone from Motorola that manages to waltz into a crowded phone market and instantly make its own segment. It may be small, but I expect sales of the V3 to be big (I can't believe I just wrote that).

The verdict? Well, with the exception of an extraordinarily crappy phonebook application, it looks like a dream. I expect the V3 RaZr to sell out as soon as it hits the streets.

So iTunes for Motorola phones was hardly the only announcement made last night during Motorola's new 'Seamless Mobility' launch. For instance, the V3 RAZR -- the super-hot all-metal clamshell phone that we mentioned yesterday [pictured right] -- was officially unveiled, as was the MPx220, the Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition clamshell with an integrated 1.23-megapixel camera. We'll have more details on these two new hot flip phones as we learn more, but there's certainly no shortage of good information in the press releases. The real question is which would you rather have: A super-slim metal phone with okay features or a high-end but slightly more traditionally styled phone with lots of features?

cdma_razr.jpgMotorola has announced a CDMA version of the massively popular V3 RAZR, which means either Sprint or Verizon users should be expecting the phone at some point in the near future. Engadget played with the new model at CTIA and noticed it has a 1-megapixel camera, instead of the GSM RAZR's skimpy VGA sensor, which is good news for late adopters, I guess. Sadly, none of the new Motorola phones are quite as impressive as the RAZR. I was really hoping the SLVR models, as thin as they are, were thinner.

That's right: make sure the punishment really fits the crime. Over in Italy, if you are caught uploading or downloading an unauthorized file, you now face three years in jail. While older, more intelligent laws focused on whether or not the person copying files was doing so for commercial gain, this new law takes away that provision completely. It's a different law than the one that we just spoke about in California, but it's almost as bad. Update: And since we're on the subject of silly laws concerning music, Greece is warning people that they can be thrown in jail for buying an unauthorized CD - not just for making or selling it.
