Dog bites AIBO

Dog bites AIBO 03/21/2003 10:17 AM
Clive sez:
Many people love showering attention on their Aibos, pretending they're real. But what about actual dogs? Are they fooled? To find out, a bunch of French scientists recently had a few real dogs interact with some Aibos. It all went quite peacefully, until the scientists decided to put a piece of meat in the room and have an Aibo and a dog compete over it. Go to their site and you enjoy what is surely a first in scientific history: Live video of a snarling dog kicking the living shit out of a hapless robot.

The best part is the explanatory note by the scientists: "The horrible screams that you hear at the end of this film were made by the experimenters, who were startled to see the dog attack the AIBO ... we strongly advise you not to try anything similar with your AIBO."

Attacking Aibo

Attacking Aibo 03/21/2003 12:29 PM

It's like the Turing test, but for dogs: Will a real dog attack one of Sony's Aibo robotic dogs if it thinks that the artificial canine is going after its food? Fortunately, scientists at Sony's Computer Science Lab in Paris are on the case, with the hilarious results caught on videotape, America's Funniest Home Video-style:

The horrible screams that you hear at the end of this film were made by the experimenters, who were startled to see the dog attack the AIBO. This was the first time that the AIBO was attacked, but it was not the last. During the course of the experiment, the AIBO was sometimes knocked over, bitten and chewed. It is still in perfect working order, and shows no visible signs of damage.

First Aibo with it's own Mobl0g

First Aibo with it's own Mobl0g 02/18/2004 01:27 PM
Usually, moblogs are weblogs containing posted photos from mobile phones or digital cameras. Phillip M. Torrone tells us he is now sharing his moblog with a Sony Aibo that can post random shots from its internal camera to the blog. Phillip describes it this way: "the robot dog posts once every few hours automatically using its built in camera, his built in wifi and emails it to the site." This might be the first robot with its own blog; well, provided you don't count Robot Frank's online diary.

Control Aibo By PSP

Control Aibo By PSP 04/12/2005 11:31 AM

aibo_psp.jpg imageWireless Watch Japan reports on findings in this week's Famitsu that indicate the Aibo can inadvertently be controlled by the PSP. I'm not sure what is meant by the "inadvertently" part, but I assume that if you actually have an Aibo, you know. Is this because of interference? 802.11b? Can I be really be arrested for spitting on the sidewalk in Singapore? Frankly, this article creates more questions than it answers.

The Curious Aibo

The Curious Aibo 06/17/2005 07:11 PM
IT World has an article about how Sony researchers have created 'curious' Aibos. The researchers put about a dozen Aibos in playpens with balls and after some time the Aibos went from swivelling their legs and heads to wiggling, to being able to crawl and following a ball that had been placed in front of them. The researchers claim that this is open-ended learning and not preprogrammed. The researchers say the key is that these new Aibos have a metabrain which keeps them learning. If their learning isn't going anywhere (bored) it makes them curious to learn new things. The project is not expected to lead to products soon, if at all. The scientists do hope to add more stimuli and let the Aibos learn over longer periods of time to see if they may learn even more.

psp_aibo_scan.jpgIt looks like the big 'Control Aibo by PSP' story was just a hoax, perpetrated by Japan's famous gaming magazine, Famitsu.
