Alarm clock that hides
03/29/2005 08:54 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Clocky is an alarm clock that hides when you hit its snooze button. It
was developed by Gauri Nanda at the MIT Media Lab. From the project
description:
When the alarm clock
goes off and the snooze button is pressed, Clocky will roll off the
bedside table and wheel away, bumping mindlessly into objects on the
floor until it eventually finds a spot to rest. Minutes later, when
the alarm sounds again, the sleeper must get up out of bed and search
for Clocky. This ensures that the person is fully awake before turning
it off. Small wheels that are concealed by Clocky's shag enable it to
move and reposition itself, and an internal processor helps it find a
new hiding spot every day.
I don't like being told when to wake up but I've come to terms with
the idea that I have to. In designing Clocky, I was in part inspired
by kittens I've had that would bite my toes every morning.

06/22/2005 02:10 AMThe art of hiding information from anyone except from the intended
receiver has been used for many centuries. Hiding information by
embedding it in other, seemingly innocuous information is known as
steganography, a word that means "covered writing" in Greek. Today,
steganography applications can hide one file within another on a
computer. Steganography applications are available on many different
platforms, including Windows, Linux, and *BSD.

AOL's Cheap Computer Hides Expensive
Service?
AOL's Cheap Computer Hides Expensive
Service?
08/12/2004 01:28 PMHow desperate is AOL getting in trying to slow down the rapid decline
in their subscriber lists? Knowing that Wall Street will freak if
they dare to lower their dialup prices to anything even remotely more
competitive, they're now trying to
sell a cheap computer to hide the high dialup
costs. The way it works is you get a very basic computer for
about $300, but you need to agree to a year's worth of AOL's $24/month
dialup service. The difference between that and a cut-rate dialup
pretty much wipes away any "savings" from this cheap computer.
However, don't tell that to AOL. They're insisting that the most
expensive dialup service around, that's bleeding customers at faster
and faster rates isn't expensive at all. They don't have any reason
for it, other than they say so: "I categorically deny the service is
expensive." Well, that's convincing. I hate to break it to AOL, but
it's not people inside AOL who determine whether or not your service
is expensive. It's your competitors who consistently price well below
what you offer, and your customers who see greener (cheaper, faster)
pastures elsewhere.
Win DRM hides malicious trojans, RIAA
deploys infected music on P2P
Win DRM hides malicious trojans, RIAA
deploys infected music on P2P
12/30/2004 04:48 PMCory Doctorow:
According to PCWorld and TechDirt, Windows DRM contains a flaw that
allows for attakcers to create music files that contain trojans that
attack your computer when you play them, and moreover, the usic
industry has hired a company called Overpeer to flood the P2P networks
with infected fake music files.
Overpeer is the same company that the recording industry has hired in
the past to dump fake versions of songs on file sharing networks. What
the article doesn't answer is whether or not the industry hired
Overpeer to dump spyware on the network as well, but it's likely
they're pleased either way. Overpeer defends their actions by saying
that anyone obviously deserves what they get because, obviously, they
were looking for unauthorized files. It's not clear that everyone
would agree. Sneaking malicious files onto someone's computer because
"they deserved it!" doesn't seem like a very good justification. What
may be even more important to this story, however, is the revelation
of just how easy it is, thanks to a huge loophole in Microsoft's copy
protection technology, to include a malicious file with an audio or
video file. Basically, because Windows DRM needs to look for a
license, all anyone needs to do is point that license to a website
that loads malicious content and off you go. Thank you Microsoft, for
creating a huge loophole that will probably make sure millions of new
computers are loaded with spamming, DDOSing trojans shortly.

W's False pride
W's False pride
09/24/2004 11:57 AMThis is interesting: Republicans for
Humility.
When I look at the W presidency and closer at the man himself and
ask myself why I would not vote for him, humility ranks at the top
(the lack of it, actually). I've seen time and time again, whenever he
is asked a challenging question, or given the opportunity to reflect
on past decisions, and Bush will respond in the most ways that
approach complete arrogance.
Progress is continuing well in Iraq. I've never made a mistake in
my presidency. Rumsfeld is doing a terrific job. The economy is strong
and turning a corner.
Some write it off as optimism, but when he was asked about any bad
decisions he's made earlier this year and said he's never made a
mistake, he lost all credibility with me. Mistakes aren't always a bad
thing, they're an opportunity to learn. And great men make thousands
of mistakes on their way to greatness. When I heard him state his
complete lack of mistakes, one word came to mind: Pride.
For a religious man, he should know about the sing of Pride and even to the
non-religious, most folks have a low tolerance for arrogance. The line
between "That guy is really optimistic" and "That jerk thinks he's
perfect in every way" is a fine one.
It's great to see a republican-run site asking for some humility.
People aren't perfect. Even great leaders make mistakes. The greatest
leaders we've ever had took the time to reflect on them, acknowledge
them, and repair any damage caused. When it comes to W, I'm not seeing
any of that, just a complete lack of introspection and humility.
