Google Boosts Search Index

Google Boosts Search Index 02/17/2004 09:02 PM

Google on Tuesday said its index increased to 6 billion items, including more than 4 billion Web pages. The announcement comes as competition in the search-engine market heats up.

CC search index breakdown

CC search index breakdown 03/14/2005 06:06 PM

Folks love a license distribution breakdown, so here's another, this from the current index of 1.2 million pages (larger crawls forthcoming) used by the Creative Commons search engine:

Allows commercial useAllows derivative worksAllows both
Audio327832
Image194816
Interactive316527
Text286923
Video136512
All277023

All numbers in the above table are percentages: 32 percent of pages marked as containing audio content use licenses that allow commercial use, 78 percent allow derivatives, and 32 percent allow both. In the case of audio works, almost nobody has chosen to allow commercial use without also allowing derivatives.

It appears that people licensing audio have chosen to offer more liberal terms than average while those licensing still and moving images have chosen less liberal terms than average.

Gizmodo-gbi_pimpin.jpg image

So this week's Google Buzz Index might not be as interesting to everyone else as is it is to me, since I'm writing about Personal Such-and-such Players all week long, but it's something I really had wondered about, especially with the influx of new media players coming out of Asia. I really didn't expect "personal video player" to take such a huge lead, but there's no mistaking it -- that's the term most used to describe these devices. I'm a little disappointed, too; I'd much rather use 'Personal/Portable Media Player' as it is a more accurate description of what these devices can do. Once we ever get around to changing our categories, my guess is that PortableMedia will still be what we go with over PersonalVideo, numbers be damned.

More loose science Google mining today, starting with a sampling of the five major next generation portable gaming systems. I'm a little surprised -- the Nintendo DS comes out on top, even over the Sony PSP. My guess is science is failing us here, as another query for "playstation portable" pulls up another 666,000 hits (oooweeoooh), which added to the to the "sony psp" results brings us up to 1,425,000, or about 200k over Nintendo. My guess is it's somewhere in between those numbers and it's fair to say the Nintendo DS and the PSP are, buzz-wise, in a dead heat. The Nokia N-Gage QD makes a sizeable showing, which is pretty respectable until you run just "n-gage," which nets a response of over 4 million. Since we're trying to compare next generation unreleased and just-released hardware, though, I left those results out. The Gizm(welovepigs)ondo is just a blip on the radar, in part because of the recent name change, and in part because it is doomed to failure. The Tapwave Zodiac does fare any better, which is a bit disappointing. Time to rally the troops, Tapwave.

The next Google Buzz Index, where we see which of the possible names for the second iteration of Microsoft's Xbox have the highest buzz, is after the jump.

So I thought I'd try to get all sciencey on you, here, and did some informal Google mining to see what people are talking about. I made these first two graphs in Excel all by myself!

The first is a comparison of keyboarded messaging tools: the Treo 600, the RIM Blackberry (all models), and the upcoming Motorola MPx (for spice). The listing on the left (horizontal, not the vertical label) is my Google search string, just so you can check the search terms yourself if you want. As I said, this isn't an exact science, but I tried my best to weed out false positives. The Treo wins the buzz index this round, but the MPx has a strong start for something that won't even be out until the fall.
