Chapter 8: Parsing and Using Feeds
06/05/2005 11:48 PMIn this section, we'll look at the two major alternatives for parsing
feeds, MagpieRSS and the Ultraliberal Feed Parser. Both parsers are
libraries, both convert feeds into native data structures and neither
cares whether a feed is RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 or Atom. By O'Reilly. 0603

Ads in Feeds
Ads in Feeds
01/26/2004 12:42 PM
RSSAds.com, supposedly
operated by Chad Williams
of SF, recently opened its doors (sources: Ti
m
Marman, Mike
Gunderloy) and is looking for publishers of premium
syndicatable content.
Will RSSAds.com make money? Maybe. That's maybe as in
“I hope they
succeed but don't expect me to make a
bet...yet.” Can advertising
in feeds make money? Yes, but it will be difficult to pull
off.
Here are some problems to consider:
It's too easy to filter ads out at the receiving end, meaning
news aggregators.
Since retrieval and processing of the feed is fully under news
aggregators' control,
identifying ads is much easier than trying to intercept ads-laden
content flowing
to a browser. Ads can be identified by URL, words,
dimensions, etc.
News aggregator developers have no incentives to not filter
ads.
Fierce competition among news aggregators developers means ad
filtering features will
be widely implemented within a few weeks. They are also
mostly individuals with
wide range of interests, so it'll be like trying to appease a
barbarian horde with
glass beads even if you had some incentives to offer.
To solve these problems, premium content publishers need to require
use of news aggregators
capable of protecting ads from being filtered. While at it,
billing and tracking
capability is needed as well to support payed content. Yes, I
am sorry to say,
blogosphere will have to embrace DRM before it can support revenue
models worthy of
pursuing.
I am out of time for now, so I'll have to continue in another
post.

Cleaning Out My Feeds
"I'm cleaning out my RSS feeds. Things that'll get feeds
removed:
1) If I haven't read you for months.
2) If you don't
publish full content feeds.
3) If you haven't published
for months." [Scobleizer:
Microsoft Geek Blogger]
Emphasis above is mine. If I'm busy and I only have so much
time to read what's in my aggregator on a given night, the feeds with
the 20 words of content definitely get the shortest shrift (pun
intended). It's an efficiency thing for me and I know I'm not
alone in this, which is why I hope libraries that offer feeds either
provide full text or provide two feeds, one abridged and one
unabridged.

MyYaoo RSS feeds
01/26/2004 03:30 AMMikel Maron (who used to work at MyYahoo) gives his insider
perspective as to the new RSS enabled MyYahoo.
For me, this is all key - as now our PeopleAggregator can have a
personality - that's a MyYahoo account. That personality can
then sit next to similar 'external' personalities - importing not only
traditiobnal FOAF people-social net info, but also web links,
classified ads, blog posts, email, RSS feeds, and even internal
messages.
Having MyYahoo work in this universe is the first step to a
world of inter-connected distributed presence on teh web.
some
thoughts on My Yahoo RSS Headlines Beta. some thoughts on My
Yahoo RSS Headlines Beta
Congrats to everyone at My Yahoo -- this means big things for Yahoo
and the Web. I have a scattering of accolades, criticisms, tips, and
next step suggestions.
The module is very useable, particularly with the great faq's and
surprisingly good (still with room for improvement) RSS feed search.
Technically, the back end must be solid for this to go beta -- we'll
see how it scales. Nice touches with OPML import (though no play
friendly OPML export), and update API.
One thing that current RSS users will immediately jump on is the 25
feed limit -- however the real limit is 150, as I'll show, which
should satisfy most human beings. You can add the module to any page
at http://my.yahoo.com/p
review/ycontent.html. Each page has its own list of feeds and
you can add up to 6 pages to My Yahoo. Users will quickly want a
single page to manage all their feeds.
This is the presentation that inspired myRadio.
More presentation options are needed in the module, particularly order
by date and hiding read articles. However, both of these features
would increase the computation load significantly.
When Yahoo Clubs merged with Yahoo Groups, My Yahoo lost a great module.
Though, RSS Headlines provides a stop gap -- just add the RSS feed for
your Yahoo Groups subscriptions. One problem is that Yahoo Groups
produces RSS is reverse order, so you'll see the oldest messages
first. Maybe with this new architecture in place for RSS, it will be
easy to resurrect the Groups module.
Companion is calling out
for integration. It could display a Subscribe To icon when it
autodiscovers RSS feeds during browsing.
Wonder why this rdf feed doesn't
work for the module? Wonder if they'll support Atom, and blogger?
Would that require a name change for the module?
Many users are moving from a browser-centered world. Will My
Yahoo grab this next opportunity with more haste? My Yahoo has lots of
great content - quotes, weather, sports, movie listings, ski reports,
tv - that would make great RSS feeds. There is a business model, as
part of a Premium Package or in feed advertisements.
But whatever I ramble, it's a great great thing to see RSS in My!

Netflix RSS feeds?

Watching movies in the age of the Internet is way different.
Now I can look something up after watching a movie, like for example,
did you know how many future stars were in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?
It's pretty amazing. Scatman Crothers, Danny DeVito, Christopher
Lloyd.
Last night I went to see
Troy with a friend, a perfectly awf
ul movie. So much for the theory that I like everything. This one
just goes on and on. At one point the camera focuses on an old man who
at first looks like he might be Peter O'Toole. Oh good, we'll have
some real acting now, I
said to myself. But on closer examination, it's just a sad old man,
not O'Toole. And the acting continues to be absolutely terrible. The
best moments are when Brad Pitt preens, looking beautiful. And that's
pretty bad. Anyway on getting home I looked up some reviews, and hold on, that was Peter O'Toole. Holy
hanna. He's aged so poorly, and has become a really shitty actor (or
is it really shitty direction). Either way, a shame.
It seems that Netflix
would be just the kind of network service to give me an RSS feed I can
subscribe to, where they would give me interesting articles about
movies I just saw, or ones I'm about to see, or movies playing near my
house that I would probably like, movies my friends liked, etc etc.
They already do a bunch of stuff like that on their site, so why not
do it in a feed?
Also, did I write this just so I could include a picture of a youngish Jack Nicholson?
I'm not telling.

MSN Music Feeds
09/03/2004 02:17 PMMicrosoft's MSN Music beta
offers RSS feeds.
As Dave Winer points
out, the
Top 100 songs feed has enclosures with excerpts of the songs,
which means you can play them by clicking the paperclip icon in FeedDemon's newspaper.
It's a shame, though, that these feeds have so many
errors in them. Hopefully Microsoft will fix these problems,
since their use of malformed dates means FeedDemon won't show the
publication date of each item.
