FILES OPENED BY A PROCESS

FILES OPENED BY A PROCESS

FILES OPENED BY A PROCESS 02/17/2004 07:59 PM

Wow, this came in handy today. Got via email on some email list I am on: This is supported on Sun Solaris, not too sure about other Unix flavours. I badly wanted to find out all the files opened by a process, and that is when I found pfiles. Usage : /usr/proc/bin/pfiles Where pid is the process-id of the process. It lists the inode numbers of all the files, opened by that process.

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

Due Process, or No Process: Rule of Law

Our government insists that it can kidnap a foreign national overseas and hold him forever in a Guantanamo jail, or put him through a military trial and even execute him. Oh, the government has made a few cosmetic concessions to law in its plans for military tribunals. But note that these are unilateral changes and can be withdrawn at any time. Our government also insists that U.S. citizens can be declared enemy combatants and tossed into jail forever, or tried by military tribunals (and maybe executed), without access to a lawyer or the courts. If the court endorses this, it's endorsing despotism.

New Users Re-opened

New Users Re-opened 07/13/2004 01:35 PM
Well, tmenezes stern demands in the queue cowed me.* And the general opinion, amongst both users and staff here, was that sponsorship was a stupid idea. In principle, I don't agree (though it did need some changes from the original concept), but I'm willing to go along with the tide. Hopefully I will get a chnace to try out sponsorship somewhere else in the future. So new user accounts are open again, without any changes. We've had a bit of a cooling off period, I've kicked out a pretty hefty number of idiots (who I expect to have to kick out again and again, but what the hell). There's a few more people with the powers and mandate to keep an eye on new users and nip the annoying ones in the bud. There are also a couple features coming to help the rest of you let us know who is being a jerk. Meanwhile, those of you who've emailed me asking when you could get an account, the time is now. Enjoy. * No, not really. Actually they would have been open before he posted that, but I had to get Voxel to fix a problem with our mail server.

Squinted.net opened

Squinted.net opened 02/01/2005 09:48 PM
A new Finnish service called squinted.net has just been opened for any and all Creative Commons or Public Domain -licensed music and media. Very good, and all the best to them! There's not much content, but they have teamed up with Loca Records, so something might be happening there...

However, in order for something like that to be useful (because whatever you may think of the record companies, they do weed out a lot of crap), some sort of preferences/recommendation system might be needed. For example, personal, public, top-10 lists, which one could subscribe to using RSS or browse on the web... People get a lot of music based on recommendations from a trusted friend (or other source), simply because searching through all the available music is impossible. You could spend all your life browsing through the iTunes music library, and not find your favourite music...

(From a thread from net.nyt which contained a bunch of interesting links, though the discussion is pretty much hashing the same old issues that have been heard many times.)

Update: There's a wonderful article on How Copyright Could Be Killing the Culture in the Globe and the Mail

It's enough of a legal rigmarole to make underfunded filmmakers simply avoid using archival clips altogether or to remove footage that they shot themselves that might include someone singing a popular hit or even Happy Birthday to You (a copyrighted song).

It also means that films like Eyes on the Prize, made in a less restrictive era of copyright rules, can simply fade away if the task of renewing copyrights becomes too difficult or costly.

These are exactly the reasons why things like Creative Commons are so important, and why the copyright terms should be shortened to something sane, say 50 years.

Philly Opened the Floodgates

Philly Opened the Floodgates 09/02/2004 01:45 PM
Since yesterday when the city of Philadelphia said it hopes to build Wi-Fi networks covering the entire city, two other cities say they're also looking into similar plans: The city of Madison, Wis. is closely watching the Philadelphia plan to blanket the city in Wi-Fi in hopes of following suit. This is one of the first times I've seen a city official discuss the affect that a city-run network might have on other commercial services. Madison officials are carefully considering how they should go about building the network and what it should cost for users because of the affect the network might have on other operators. I've wondered how commercial operators feel about municipalities using city funds to build networks that compete for their business. In addition, a city councilor in Boston said he wants to cover all of Boston with Wi-Fi [link via John]. While the cities of Philadelphia, Boston, and Madison talk about building networks, Culver City, Calif. said that next Thursday it will launch a free Wi-Fi network in its downtown area. Vernier and Firetide are supplying the equipment for the network. In other new network news, the State of Michigan also announced that SBC would build hotspots in ten Michigan State-owned parks, docks, and rest areas....

Spamalot Fans Opened Up To Lots Of Spam 03/14/2005 05:27 PM
Fans of the Broadway musical Spamalot (based on an old Monty Python movie) might have been surprised to find out that by signing up on the musical's website to be on the show's email list, they also open ed themselves up to receiving some spam. Of course, that's just the catchy hook to make the story interesting. The real story is that Spamalot and some other Broadway shows set up their mailing list software in a way that revealed the names, postal addresses and email addresses of everyone on the list. However, there's no evidence that any spammers actually got a hold of the list, or that anyone was spamming with it -- meaning that the only reason this is worthy of getting attention is because of the amusing connection with the name of the musical. Unfortunately, the reality is that this is just yet another story of an organization having weak security in place to protect the info of customers.

Games opened for hacking: Unreal
University
12/04/2003 01:13 PM

In an unusual combination of computer games and intellectual property openness, software companies Epic Games and NVidia sponsored a two-day workshop on hacking their own games. For a low cost Unreal Univesity put attendees in contact with leading game designers and taught them how to enhance their abilities to create "mods," modified objects, scenarios , or even new games from pre-existing games.

Such a willingness to open up intellectual property to external development is an unusual move in today's IP environment, as it risks brand dilution and missed sales opportunities. Supporters of this strategy claim it expands the overall market, which boosts revenue.

The November event was hosted by the North Carolina State University Center for Digital Entertainment .

The day before the Microsoft announcement on February 12th, hundreds megabytes of text files containing source code for Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 were published across a number of hacker websites. The files included the code of applications such as WINSOCK, Internet Explorer, and Outlook. All the websites where the code was published have since been closed, however there is no guarantee that the information will not resurface.

Searching For Sound

Searching For Sound 05/27/2004 11:04 AM
Many people have pointed out that search engines (yes, mainly Google) are now the "front end to the internet." However, how does that work when the internet is increasingly not just about text? Especially as broadband catches on around the world, more and more content is audio and visual content. Both new and old search engines are now working on better ways to sort through that content - using metadata and speech recognition to understand what's being said. The article uses NPR as the main example, describing how they use voice recognition technology to create immediate transcripts of their audio, which are completely searchable. They admit that these transcripts are later replaced by "more accurate" human written transcripts, but that the automated ones work well enough. The article also focuses on StreamSage, which seems to be one of the more advanced tools. It uses voice recognition to transcribe audio - but also tries to add in some contextual analysis to create an automated "table of contents" for the file, so searching through it is much easier.

Who Cares About Sound Quality?

Who Cares About Sound Quality? 01/26/2004 03:29 AM
It seems that the focus on in-home entertainment devices has moved from the stereo system to the home theater system. However, this change of focus from the audio to the visual means that many buyers are skipping out on the fancier speaker systems - much to the dismay of those who sell such speakers. Even though home theater systems require a complex setup of speakers to produce optimal sound, some are worried that many buyers are too focused on the picture they get from the screen, and thus only buy the cheapest speakers to handle the sound. Of course, they're working to change this perception. Though, there are some odd ideas - including "tactile audio" where the speakers end up embedded in the furniture of the room itself. This way, the viewer can actually "feel" the sound relate to whatever they're watching in the home theater.

Chic Symphony4U Flash Player 07/28/2004 07:52 AM

symphony4u.jpg imageThe Symphony4U is another flash memory MP3 player (get it?), this time from Korean manufacturer Chic. In all, it's nothing terribly special, although it does have a decent battery life (25 hours on two AAAs) and sort of an interesting thumb-button right in the middle. I'm sure someone will eventually pick up the Symphony4U for Stateside distribution, but until then you can satiate yourself with one of the dozens of other flash drive options.
