09/18/2004 03:55 AMThe Canadian Society for Training & Development has awarded its 2004
Canadian Award for Training Excellence to ExecuGo Media for its
design, development and delivery of “The Hallmark Way,” a “back to the
future” kind of employee learning program for Hallmark Canada. In an
era when most training industry pundits debate whether the future of
business training lies in e-learning, classroom events, print
materials or a combination of all three, ExecuGo Media and Hallmark
have decided that the answer is: none of the above. The Hallmark Way
features the ancient art of people helping people – with the right mix
of new-age digital and traditional print media simply supporting their
efforts. The Canadian Society of Training & Development will officially
award ExecuGo Media and Hallmark Canada the Canadian Award of Training
Excellence for The Hallmark Way at a ceremony during its annual
exposition in November. [PRWEB Sep 18, 2004]

Site-specific extensions
07/20/2004 01:07 AMI've been thinking about per-site user stylesheets for a while now, but my
colleague Adrian has gone one better: his All Music
Guide Corrector extension for Firefox fixes their horrible
JavaScript links, hides the useless Flash navigation and improves
their unpopular "read more" links, causing them to load content on the
current page rather than navigating to a new page entirely.
I believe that extensions like this have a significant
role to play. Bugzilla's Tech Evangelism project is overflowing with badly designed sites
that through ignorance or choice refuse to work with standards
compliant browsers, many of which have available
patches just waiting to be implemented. Per-site extensions at
least allow users to choose to fix the problem locally and route
around the damage - and their use should send a powerful message to
the sites in question.
This kind of extension also introduces some interesting
questions. How will site owners react to their users tweaking their
websites in this way? Is it ethical to modify a site without the
user's permission to improve functionality? What about to block
irritating ads?
Pop-up blockers have only scratched the surface. Let's see
some innovation.
User-Specific DOS Attacks
User-Specific DOS Attacks
01/24/2004 10:36 PMHow
Much Security is Needed?: This is a really interesting
thought.
If you have a system that locks out a user after too many
incorrect logins, then it becomes easy for a malicious user to deny
access to your users by simply attempting to log in as
them.
You could wreak some havoc with a script that just pelted a site
with failed login attempts. You could effectively disable a user
— call it a user-specific DOS attack. It would take a log
review and some coding or firewall hacking to stop the script, and a
lot of sites would have the wherewithal to do it.

It's Time for URL-Specific Browser
Settings
02/01/2005 09:08 PMHere's what I'd like to see for upcoming browsers: customized
browser settings on a URL-by-URL basis. I think it's time to admit
that different sites sometimes require vastly different browser
settings to work optimally.
For instance, I visit some sites that scroll horizontally. To see
them completely, I need to remove the Firefox sidebar. I display some
reports on my intranet that I alway end up going into Full Screen mode
to view. I normally don't pass HTTP referrers (see this), but some sites suppress images without a referrer to
prevent hot-linking, so I need to pass a referrer to them.
Then there's the browser-based printing thing I complained about the
other day.
It'd be very handy if Firefox could do all this for me. I could
see having default settings, but overriding individual settings per
site. So for a URL with a wildcard of
"http://intranet/wide_reports*", supress the sidebar and go into Full
Screen mode.
This is probably hard from a technical perspective, as Firefox
would essentially have to scan all the settings every time a page
loaded. But what a difference this would make. Provide some
centralized control and it would be fantastic for intranets, since you
could control not only the page, but have some form of control over
the environment the page loads into.

08/18/2004 10:41 PMNew in Mozill
a 1.8 Alpha 3: bug 238099 - implement
at-rule for matching on site/document URL. Here's the example:
@-moz-document
url-prefix(http://www.mozilla.org/) {
#q { background: white ! important; color: black ! important; }
}
Drop that in your userContent.css file for
black-on-white search fields, but only for pages with URLs starting in
http://www.mozilla.org/. Two other selection functions
are available: domain(mozilla.org) for all
page (and sub-domains) of the mozilla.org domain and
url(http://www.mozilla.org/) for just the page matching
that exact URL.
The sooner this makes it in to Firefox the better.
