Wisconsin considers legalizing cat
hunting
04/12/2005 11:50 AM
David Pescovitz: Should people in Wisconsin be permitted to hunt down and kill free-roaming cats? Residents of the state are voting on that very scary question. The advisory results will then go to Wisconsin's Natural Resources Board. From the Associated Press:
La Crosse firefighter Mark Smith, 48, helped spearhead the cat-hunting proposal. He wants Wisconsin to declare free-roaming wild cats an unprotected species, just like skunks or gophers. Anyone with a small-game license could shoot the cats at will....

Every year in Wisconsin alone, an estimated 2 million wild cats kill 47 million to 139 million songbirds, according to state officials. Despite the astounding numbers, Smith's plan has been met with fierce opposition from cat lovers.

Critics of Smith's idea organized Wisconsin Cat-Action Team and developed a Web site - dontshootthecat.com. Some argue it is better to trap wild cats, spay or neuter them, before releasing them.

"Leaks in the Wi-Fi Bubble"

"Leaks in the Wi-Fi Bubble" 11/17/2003 03:01 PM
The San Jose Business Journal looks at cut backs at Trapeze and Vivato, referring to the setbacks as "leaks in the Wi-Fi bubble": The story also looks at Cometa's scaled down ambitions and is the fist place I've seen a Cometa spokesperson note that the company's original plans were overly optimistic. Cometa has gotten some flack for delivering on a slower pace but not admitting that its plans had changed. The story also notes that Vivato has 40 customers, which is more than I thought. I think the piece unfairly picks on Trapeze for requiring customers to use its proprietary APs--all the WLAN switch vendors require customers to use their APs. Otherwise they couldn't offer all their whiz-bang features. But ultimately those whiz-bang features may not be worth it for customers who don't want to replace existing APs or who don't like to feel forced to buy only a certain AP. I keep reading about increasing sales at companies like Bluesocket and Reefedge which both offer beefed-up security solutions to customers regardless of the APs they use....

Wisconsin Governor Proposing Internet
Sales Tax

Wisconsin Governor Proposing Internet
Sales Tax
03/14/2005 04:34 PM
I lived for over 40 years in Wisconsin until I migrated out here to the left coast. I am sure glad I moved. The tax-happy Democratic Governor of Wisconsin, Jim Doyle, has decided that the State's 5% sales tax should be applied to anything downloaded from the Internet. Music, ebooks, software, and other online purchases that normally go untaxed would now be the responsibilty of the Wisconsin residents to claim and pay the 5% sales tax. Dumb idea Mr. Doyle.

Thank God for a few sane folks in the Wisconsin Government, Republican Rep. Scott Jensen, who dubbed the governor's idea an "iPod" tax, said he will ask his fellow Republicans who control the Legislature to kill it. "Unlike Gov. Doyle, I want to encourage electronic commerce," he said. "As the budget process moves forward, I will be working to push the 'delete' button on Gov. Doyle's iPod tax."

Jensen is one of 16 legislators on the Joint Finance Committee, which will hold its first public hearing on Doyle's $53 billion budget on Wednesday in Watertown. The Finance Committee will draft its own two-year budget in April or May, and then forward it to the full Legislature.A Legislative Fiscal Bureau summary of Doyle's proposal says it would extend the 5% sales tax to "audio works," including music, books on tape and pre-recorded speeches; "audiovisual works," including movies, music videos and live events; "finished artwork," including paintings, designs and photographs; and "literary works," including books.

CDW Leaks Information About New iPaqs

CDW Leaks Information About New iPaqs 07/13/2004 10:05 AM

HP_rz1715_1_S.jpg imageLooks like online office retailer CDW jumped the gun a bit with HP's new iPaq line, revealing some surprisingly disappointing information about the rz1715, specifically. According to CDW's information, the rz1715 will not be using the Second Edition of Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, will not have dual-slots as previously rumored, and is listed as being loaded with a minuscule 25MB of RAM. One upside, though, is that the shipping time for all the new iPaqs is listed as 1-2 weeks -- if you're feeling frisky, you could probably pre-order now.

Brighthand has a breakdown off all the leaked information about all five new iPaqs.

Nintendo DS Leaks UHF Noise

Nintendo DS Leaks UHF Noise 12/22/2004 01:36 AM

imageNintendo's new DS handheld gaming system (which I've been told is pretty much out of stock everywhere, although Nintendo is supposed to drop another shipment on the 22nd) apparently dumps out video noise that can be picked up by some older, presumably unshielded televisions. That probably wouldn't necessitate an entire post, but Jim Younkin busted out his old Sony Watchman to test it, which is one of my favorite gadgets ever (I had a later model that I would often impress nerdy girls with on field trips for the 10 to 15 minutes that the batteries would last).
