Fliers face tighter screening for

Fliers face tighter screening for
explosives (USATODAY.com)
09/17/2004 06:56 AM
USATODAY.com - Starting Monday, the government will intensify airport screening, requiring passengers, for example, to remove coats. The Transportation Security Administration announced changes Thursday, motivated by recommendations of the Sept. 11 commission and the recent explosions of two Russian airliners in flight.Taken together, new procedures are intended to deter terrorists from sneaking explosives onto planes under clothing or in carry-on bags.Awaiting air travelers:More discretion. TSA screeners will be given greater authority to refer passengers for extra scrutiny if clothing looks bulky, misshapen or otherwise suspicious. Some passengers also will receive expanded pat-downs when screeners consider it warranted. Currently, they concentrate mostly on arms and legs. Now, they'll be able to pat other areas if they look suspicious. TSA spokeswoman Yolanda Clark would not elaborate, citing security.Explosive detection. All travelers who receive secondary screening will have belongings run through devices that can detect trace amounts of explosives. Outer garments. Passengers must take off blazers, warm-up jackets and other outer layers before walking through security checkpoints. A woman wearing only a blazer as a top would not have to take it off. But if it looked like it was concealing something, she could receive additional screening. As before, female screeners will be matched to female passengers and males to males, Clarke says.TSA says it's too early to say how many more travelers will be detained. "We don't anticipate any significant change in operations or wait time," Clark says. The agency will track effects on passenger flow.Critics say additional pat-downs could make some people, especially young women, feel uncomfortable."There's more opportunity for abuse," says James Plummer, a policy analyst at advocacy group Consumer Alert. Frequent-flier Steve Lipson of Tampa calls the changes "a farce" and doubts they'll improve security. "Anyone could get easily around such ridiculous things if they wanted to," he says. Some travelers disagree. "It's a no-brainer," says frequent-flier Lucas Ferrara, a lawyer in Manhattan. "If given a choice, I'd opt for more security rather than less."Discussions about upgrading TSA security gained urgency last month after two Russian commercial airliners crashed, killing 90 people on board. Explosives were found at both crash sites. Authorities suspect Chechen women on each plane. The TSA has been taking other steps, most recently installing document scanners at Reagan Washington National that examine drivers licenses and boarding passes for traces of explosives.

Of all the personal computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80 percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92 million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another issue altogether.

People have devised many tricks—such as sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their ability to find the Web page all over again.

The goal of this study is to understand better the ways in which people manage information for subsequent re-access and re-use. The study focuses on the management of information found on the Word Wide Web. Follow-on studies will look at similar problems and practices of personal information management for other information types including email and personal files (electronic and paper-based). The classic problem of information retrieval, simply put, is to help people find the relatively small number of things they are looking for (books, articles, web pages, CDs, etc.) from a very large set of possibilities. This classic problem has been studied in many variations and has been addressed through a rich diversity of information retrieval tools and techniques.

A follow-on problem also exists which has received relatively less study: Once found, how are things organized for re-access and re-use later on? What can be done to avoid the need to repeat the entire search process? We refer to this as the problem of Keeping Found Things Found. The current study addresses this problem in the context of World Wide Web use. The study focuses on use of the Web by managers, researchers, librarians and other information specialists. But it is expected that the results of the study will be relevant to most users of the Web.

Cards as weapons

Cards as weapons 06/21/2004 12:35 PM
In 1977, magician Ricky Jay wrote the definitive book on card throwing--Cards As Weapons--with such chapters as "Cards and the Martial Arts" and "Self-Defense." From the Smithsonian article about Jay that I bl ogged a few days ago:
Grip"According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Jay has thrown a card farther, higher and faster than anyone. He captured the records one day in 1976; one card he threw traveled 135 feet; another sailed into a window several stories up; another flew 90 miles an hour. He throws a card with such deadly precision it can pierce a watermelon at 20 paces."
While Cards as Weapons unfortunately is out-of-print and copies go for several hundred dollars, BB reader David Maduram has posted selections from the text on his Web site. Link

"I guess any self-respecting rancher would have shot, shoveled and shut up, but he didn't do that". An annoyed Premier of Alberta Ralph Klein was quoted saying this on Sept 17th, 2003 at a weekend meeting of U.S. governors and western Canadian premiers in response to the discovery of one case of mad-cow found in his province.
Fast forward to today: USDA refused to release mad cow records , United Press has been requesting these documents since July 10th, 2003 and has been continually stonewalled as recently as Dec 17th ,2003. Especially troubling is the question of where the Canadian mad-cow possibly originated.
