The European Commission has rejected an offer from Microsoft Corp. to settle its long-running antitrust case, said people familiar with the situation on Tuesday. In what was described by one person close to the case as "a half-hearted" effort to meet the Commission's concerns, Microsoft Corp. offered to attach rivals' software in the form of CD-ROMs to new PCs running Windows.

European Union regulators have rejected as insufficient Microsoft's latest offer to settle long-running antitrust charges but are continuing talks, sources said Tuesday. With a verdict due this spring, the U.S. software giant has been scrambling to avert what could be a far-reaching order to change the way it packages its dominant Windows desktop operation system and reveal more of its underlying code to rival manufacturers.

Appeals Court Rejects Microsoft Plea;
Lindows Case Heads to Trial
05/25/2004 11:46 AM
Microsoft's trademark lawsuit against Lindows will continue to trial, possibly later this year, after a federal appeals court denied Microsoft's appeal request. Microsoft was questioning an earlier court decision that found Microsoft's trademark on "Windows" to be potentially invalid because the word is a common term. Microsoft had argued that the term wasn't generic in the computer industry, despite its general use to describe onscreen objects in various graphical systems dating back almost 30 years. And because Microsoft does own a trademark on the term, it had sued Lindows for naming its Linux distribution Lindows, a name that might confuse consumers.
