Ethernet Switches Will Encompass WLAN

Ethernet Switches Will Encompass WLAN 04/13/2005 11:20 AM
In-Stat says that WLAN switches will become more prevalent, but not as stand-alone devices: As Mobile Pipeline explains it, Ethernet switches will increasingly incorporate WLAN functions making the use of thin access points (most radio intelligence) a given but the centralized functions won't require specialized hardware. The article specifically notes that Aruba and Trapeze may face difficulties on their own; Airespace was acquired by Cisco. There's another course for Aruba and Trapeze and similar companies to take, one that I think we're seeing the early directions toward. Instead of selling centralized hardware and specialized APs, move to centralized software that runs on commodity PCs that integrators and VARs can configure. The value would move entirely to the switching software. Aruba and Trapeze's SLAPP proposal is one step in that direction for removing specialized requirements from APs; the next step would be to agree on a standard featureset with extensions that could loaded by individual switches....

OnTime Power-Over-Ethernet Clock

OnTime Power-Over-Ethernet Clock 04/05/2005 11:30 AM

ontime_ethernet.jpgI sort of understand why this simple 'OnTime' digital clock is $200. It operates on only power-over-Ethernet and syncs up with any SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) server it can find on the network. And it's designed to be seen from over 150 feet away, so we're talking about something that would live in a data center, not your house.

But why hasn't someone made one for our houses? Regular Ethernet has some power over it—surely it's enough to drive a simple clock and some SNTP firmware. I send this idea blindly to the internet, like a A.O. Spare sigil, and await its return. I will still expect the usual 15 percent conceptual licensing fee.

06/03/2004 08:47 AM
Apple's newest AirPort Extreme Base Station can operate usi ng Power over Ethernet (PoE), making it possible for IT personnel in corporations, schools and other institutional settings to install the device in locations that lack easy access to an AC outlet, such as crawlspaces or areas above suspended ceilings. That presumes they're using an Ethernet switch or hub that can deliver PoE, however, which many businesses don't have. Now MacWireless offers its own PoE solution comprising a pair of adapters that convert a standard Ethernet cable into one that carries power as well. The US$69.98 interface works over up to 330 feet of Ethernet cable.

Cisco May Intro New Support for Roaming

Cisco May Intro New Support for Roaming 05/04/2004 05:03 PM
EWeek reports that Cisco is about to introduce new products that will enable roaming between access points: The capability is key to rolling out voice services on WLANs. The products will work in conjunction with Cisco's Catalyst 6500 switches. One apparent downside to the Cisco setup is that it won't support roaming between APs that are connected to different switches. Also, packets will travel from the client to the AP then through to potentially multiple switches before reaching their destination, which could be a client attached to the same AP. Most WLAN switch vendors and security gateway developers already support roaming across networks and even across subnets. But Cisco always has a leg up on startups because of its installed base. Cisco is hosting a Webcast for journalists tomorrow during which executives may detail more about the new platform. EWeek wasn't expecting an announcement from Cisco until Networld+Interop next week, however....

AirWave Adds Cisco Airespace Support 04/11/2005 02:57 PM

AirWave's multi-vendor WLAN management tool now has Airespace support: Version 3.3 will support configuration of the Cisco Airespace WLAN switch controllers and access points. This is fairly significant given AirWave's existing support for other Cisco devices and Airespace's success in shipping boxes to academia and enterprises leading to Cisco's acquisition.
