W's False pride
W's False pride
09/24/2004 11:57 AMThis is interesting: Republicans for
Humility.
When I look at the W presidency and closer at the man himself and
ask myself why I would not vote for him, humility ranks at the top
(the lack of it, actually). I've seen time and time again, whenever he
is asked a challenging question, or given the opportunity to reflect
on past decisions, and Bush will respond in the most ways that
approach complete arrogance.
Progress is continuing well in Iraq. I've never made a mistake in
my presidency. Rumsfeld is doing a terrific job. The economy is strong
and turning a corner.
Some write it off as optimism, but when he was asked about any bad
decisions he's made earlier this year and said he's never made a
mistake, he lost all credibility with me. Mistakes aren't always a bad
thing, they're an opportunity to learn. And great men make thousands
of mistakes on their way to greatness. When I heard him state his
complete lack of mistakes, one word came to mind: Pride.
For a religious man, he should know about the sing of Pride and even to the
non-religious, most folks have a low tolerance for arrogance. The line
between "That guy is really optimistic" and "That jerk thinks he's
perfect in every way" is a fine one.
It's great to see a republican-run site asking for some humility.
People aren't perfect. Even great leaders make mistakes. The greatest
leaders we've ever had took the time to reflect on them, acknowledge
them, and repair any damage caused. When it comes to W, I'm not seeing
any of that, just a complete lack of introspection and humility.
Right Wing's Attacks on Science
Jeopardize More than Scholarship
Right Wing's Attacks on Science
Jeopardize More than Scholarship
03/06/2004 01:58 AMRobert F. Kennedy Jr.:
The
Junk Science of George W. Bush.
Today, flat-earthers within the
Bush Administration--aided by right-wing allies who have produced
assorted hired guns and conservative think tanks to further their
goals--are engaged in a campaign to suppress science that is arguably
unmatched in the Western world since the Inquisition. Sometimes,
rather than suppress good science, they simply order up their own.
Meanwhile, the Bush White House is purging, censoring and blacklisting
scientists and engineers whose work threatens the profits of the
Administration's corporate paymasters or challenges the ideological
underpinnings of their radical anti-environmental agenda. Indeed, so
extreme is this campaign that more than sixty scientists, including
Nobel laureates and medical experts, released a statement on February
18 that accuses the Bush Administration of deliberately distorting
scientific fact "for partisan political ends."Google Offering Anita Borg Scholarship

Scholarship, teaching, new media, and
copyright conference
06/17/2004 11:28 AM
The
Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania is holding a conference this weekend on the growing copyright
problems facing scholars using digital media. "Knowledge Held Hostage:
Scholarly Versus Corporate Rights in the Digital Age" examines
the
overlap of creative use of technology with (often inadvertent)
copyright infringement.
Questions to be addressed include the following:
What justifies fair use in a scholarly context?
Is there a viable alternative to fair use in the
academic environment?
What are the fair use issues and needs raised by different scholarly
media (for example, print, film, digital media, databases)?
Do different kinds of institutional arrangements
(large vs. small school vs. professional society, classroom vs.
library) raise different fair use issues and needs?
The event is also
sponsored by Rice University 's
Connexions project
.

11/11/2003 10:33 AM Are
You, Deep Down, Secretly, Between-You-And-Me, Proud Of Your
Country? Even if you're not
Canadian?
Because
a lot of people in the world, no matter how badly run
their country might be, seem to be just that. Isn't it weird, though -
and, well, stupid - to be proud of something that just happened to
happen to us and that we've done nothing to deserve, whether for good
or for bad? A more telling question that occurs is: what nationality
would you
choose to be, if you couldn't be the one you are?
Here's
the
menu.

Heather Gold on Pride 2005
Heather Gold on Pride 2005
06/22/2005 01:49 AMDavid Pescovitz:
With San Francisco Pride 2005 coming up this weekend, geek comedian
Heather Gold has written an essay about her sense of pride and
Pride:
Pride is traditionally the day queer folks take a break
from designing and catering other people's parties to have a party of
our own. I'm still debating whether I’ll go to the Gay Pride
Pride Parade this year. I usually go, but I'm a little hesitant this
year. I think it’s because I'm reaching gay middle age, which
can begin as early as 25...
Stand proud Gay Parcheesi Players with Hay Fever! You are not alone.
Soon, you too will have a float in the parade. And a special flag.
This is how we got the new acronym GLBTIQQ. We used to be the gay
community. Now, we are the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual,
intersex, queer and questioning community. If we really want to be
genuinely inclusive, we should add FSP for friendly straight people.
And then add some vowels, because they're feeling oppressed and
excluded from the acronym. Then add T for Tired, because you're
exhausted by the time you get to the end of it. GBLTIQQUOEFSPAT. This
is how the Parade got so long.
No one will be left out! Except the numbers. Maybe the genderqueer
folks can be the numbers. Or maybe we can just use ?. The Parade is
now as long as ?. They should have a halftime break. They can have
straight men come out and play football for us.
