Couple Busted In Online Coupon Scam

Couple Busted In Online Coupon Scam 04/15/2004 02:23 PM
Fake online coupons are nothing new, but this short AP article about a couple being arrested for selling thousands of dollars worth of fake online coupons has me a bit confused. The woman says she stopped as soon as she found out it was illegal - which raises a bunch of other questions not answered by the article. Was she creating the coupons herself? If so, then she must have known it was illegal. If not, where were they coming from? The article does mention that her husband was charged with "forgery, fraud, theft and other crimes," so it's possible that he was creating the fake coupons and giving them to her to sell. Still, you might think she would have asked where they came from. Of course, I also wonder who buys coupons? I always thought coupons were the things you got for free with the Sunday paper.

Cory Doctorow: Flotsam sez, "It's a unique event when a country drafts its first constitution. Even rarer is one that exposes it to the world in a PDF. The latter is even more noteworthy when the country is one that has successfully protected its culture and heritage from outside influence. The draft Constitution has been released in both Bhutan's indigenous language, Dzongkha, and English. Any country that says 'gross national happiness is more important than gross national product' has to be a model for the rest of the world."

So cool. Inexplicably, the constitutional site is marred with "Copyright(c) Constitution Drafting Committee. All Rights Reserved." They've even obfuscated their html. Because goodness know you wouldn't want your constitution being pirated. Link (Thanks, Flotsam!)

What's a namber? A namber is a word that acts as a mnemonic for a number. For example, 65 is drum, and 181 is push. A namber address uses an arbitrarily-chosen list of nambers to represent each of the numbers from 0 to 255 in order to assemble four words to represent any IP address. Metafilter.com's namber is earth .frog.brown.tooth, and mysteryrobot.com conveniently provides translation and forwarding to the real IP address.

A couple of disclosures

A couple of disclosures 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

I need to make a couple of disclosures, but I want to be as sensitive as I can. I don't want to be part of supposedly open processes that only include a small number of people. They aren't open, you could say say they're "as open as possible," to be generous; or "exclusive," to be really accurate.

Anyway, I've had several email exchanges and one conference call about formalizing the specification for RSS with a standards organization. My position in these private communications is exactly stated in the Roadmap section of the RSS 2.0 spec. I'm basically explaining how it would apply to a formalization process, which I would support. I would not agree to be the chair of a working group, probably even wouldn't make sense for me to be a member of the group. That's all that's happened so far.

Second, I've been helping the evangelists at Microsoft, Lenn Pryor, Jeff Sandquist, Robert Scoble, in formulating a new approach to working with developers. I plan to be open about this too, because my goal here is to help bootstrap a two-party system, and when that's working, a three-party system, and so on. I think Microsoft can exist very well in that kind of environment, but it's going to be a tough thing to pull off, because they're so large, and they're basically a gravity well, largely influenced by their own internal conversation, that it's hard for an average MS person to understand why people outside MS even bother to exist.

And now with so many of them having weblogs, it's going to be hard to keep MS people frrom interfering. But that was the problem with Apple, and Netscape and now Google; and it will be a problem in the tech industry until it's solved. How can an organization be clued in, and still work with outsiders. This could be something David Weinberger looks into at the sessio n he's leading at BloggerCon.

I recently came across this page (it's a couple years old) detailing an uncommon but interesting migration, from BeOS to OS X.

Okay, so I indulged in a little Schadenfreude against the holy Mac universe from time to time, pissing off thousands. I'm not proud. But neither am I a bad person. I've just always wanted the most from my computer, and it always seemed like the Mac offered very little of the best, and a whole lot of the worst. But recently I've seen the light, and am here to make amends for my blasphemy. I hereby publicly apologize for my past life as a Mac-hater. Not only that, but thanks to OS X, I'm now a bona fide Mac OS lover.

Dubai: "Sure, we can build that."

Dubai: "Sure, we can build that." 04/01/2005 11:48 AM

I'm kind of a building / engineering / architecture groupie, and I'm starting to learn how Dubai is Ground Zero these days for magnificent buildings. There's simply nothing they can't or won't build.

The picture above is a rendering of the Burj Dubai, which is currently under construction. It's going to be the tallest building in the world, beating out the current record holder, Taipei 101. (Those lesser buildings situated around it in the picture? Just regular skyscrapers.)

He refused to reveal the total number of stories, but a mock elevator at the site held a button for a 189th floor. [...]

A hotel will occupy the lower 37 floors. Floors 45 through 108 will have 700 private apartments — already sold in just eight hours, the developer said.

Corporate offices and suites will fill most of the rest, except for a 123rd floor lobby and 124th floor observation deck — with an outdoor terrace for the brave. The spire will also hold communication equipment.

Dubai already holds the record for the tallest pure residential building. The 21st Century tower is 55 stories and — according to this article at the excellent Emporis — is 100% leased by Emirates Airlines to house their flight attendants. ("Emporis: Porn for Architects")

Then there's the Burj Al Arab hotel, which you've probably seen. It's the one that looks like a big sail. It has the most famous helipad in the world — it was a clue location in Season 5 of The Amazing Race, Tiger Woods used it as a driving range, and Federer and Agassi played tennis there once.

But, if they're not building castles in the sky, those crazy folks in Dubai are doing things like this:

The Palm is a land reclamation project that created an island shaped like...well, a palm. As you can imagine, real estate on said island is not cheap. There are three of them under construction, and the first one should open late this year.

I drool with desire for the Modern Marvels and Extreme Engineering documentaries.
