Pew Musician Survey

Pew Musician Survey 05/03/2004 10:56 AM

The Pew Internet Project released a report today, which surveyed musicians and internet users. While the downloading habits portion of the results were covered in the NY Times today, the most compelling statistic from the artist report was this:

83% [of musicians] have provided free samples of their work online and significant numbers say free downloading has helped them sell CDs and increase the crowds at concerts

That's great to hear, and it's my hope these same musicians come to understand how Creative Commons can help them share their samples and also let fans rip, mix, and burn, while still increasing CD and ticket sales.

Another Major Musician Supports File
Sharing

Another Major Musician Supports File
Sharing
07/09/2004 11:41 AM
Just as everyone (outside of the recording industry) knew would happen, people are beginning to realize the other side of file sharing: that it's one of the greatest distribution and promotion tools ever created -- and it doesn't cost musicians a dime. Once people realize that their music, by itself, is actually a promotional vehicle rather than the end product itself, suddenly file sharing networks look like a gold mine, and the latest to realize that is famed musician Steve Winwood. Winwood and his label release d a song and some videos from his latest album on a variety of file sharing networks. The results, his (independent, of course) label say, have been wonderful. This really is a toe-in-the-water kind of experiment. He only released one track, and it includes a little advertisement for a TV show at the beginning, which probably gets a bit annoying for anyone who wants to listen to the song more than a few times. So, this isn't a full endorsement of file sharing, but it is a start. Amusingly, the RIAA who usually can't shut up, has no comment on this example that proves what they say isn't necessarily true.

Chart Topping Musician Thinks File
Sharing Is Great
04/29/2004 03:41 AM
So, while the MPAA is sending around industry folks to teach one-sided lessons in schools, Edinburgh University has decided to bring in a chart topping musician to discuss his view on file sharing. It turns out that Alex Kapranos, of the band Franz Ferdinand, thinks file sharing is great. "To be honest I'm all for song swapping online. Downloading music from the internet is something I do myself and something that I'd be keen to encourage." He blames the recording industry for coming down so hard on file sharing without realizing how it can be beneficial. In fact, he credits file sharing with some of the band's success: "When Franz Ferdinand played a gig in New York for the first time, a lot of people there already knew our songs and were singing along. It was amazing because our album wasn't even released in the UK at that point, never mind the US. Without the internet, we never would have had that reaction. For us it has been global word of mouth that has helped our progress, not hindered it." He also seems to understand that file sharing not only isn't going away, it opens up new possibilities for musicians: "The internet to me is like the radio, it's a way of hearing new songs and going to a shop to buy them. It can also whet your appetite to go out and buy a single or album you previously wouldn't have gone for. I don't think it is damaging musicians at all. Downloading music is as revolutionary an invention as the gramophone and I'm all for it." Glad to see a few more musicians understanding the potential of file sharing as well.

Non-Existent Publicist Sends Out Fake
Email To Promote Dead Musician

Non-Existent Publicist Sends Out Fake
Email To Promote Dead Musician
04/26/2004 05:37 PM
John submitted this absolutely bizarre story from Rolling Stone about a mysterious email that went out last week, supposedly from a music industry publicist who was fired. In the email, the publicist talks about how stupid the record company was, pointing to the fact that they actually held a seance to contact a recently dead musician to ask him to try to promote his new album from beyond the grave. As bizarre as that sounds, the true story may be even more bizarre. It turns out that the musician in question had been a royal pain for the record company, always calling and emailing them with requests. The record company made up a history of mental illness to keep him away from the press, while also creating a fake publicist to handle his calls. They gave that non-existent publicist a voicemail and email account, and the musician was apparently satisfied, believing he had a publicist dealing with his requests. Then, a few weeks before the album was due out, the musician really did die (heart attack) and the record label brought back the fake publicist to "quit" in disgust, in the hopes that the discussion over the ridiculousness of the (also non-existent) seance would get the (now non-existent) band more publicity.

Software That Lasts For Years And Years

Software That Lasts For Years And Years 07/14/2004 06:51 PM
We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.
