Which Hotel Chains Have Wi-Fi? 04/08/2005 12:16 PM
Travel columnist provides overview and links: A Washington Post travel columnist answers a reader's question about using free Wi-Fi at hotels with a long list with links and phone numbers of the chains that have extensive free installations of Wi-Fi. Also noted is SBC's statistic that 25 percent of travelers plan to use "wireless electronics" (one assumes Wi-Fi) while on the road....

Tahoe Hotel Provides Computers

Tahoe Hotel Provides Computers 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
The Block, a hotel in Tahoe that apparently caters specifically to snowboarders, is offering Wi-Fi to customers that don't have laptops. Access Data Technologies is providing what it calls the iGenie, a "compact, portable Web tablet," in the Block's cyber cafe so that customers can use the Wi-Fi connection even if they don't have their own laptop or PDA. It looks like users will see advertising on the device in exchange for free Internet access. VisionWorks Interactive is a marketing and distribution company that is putting this service together. It also has deals with Wayport and Surf and Sip. It's a good idea to place computers in hot spots, but I'm not sure why this application requires a fancy user device. Seems that a regular laptop or desktop would do the trick. I couldn't find the press release about this announcement online but VisonWorks Interactive and Access Data Technologies put the service together....

The Zompist Phrasebook may well be the only phrasebook you'll ever need. Unless, of course, you need to say something other than "The bellboy won't score me any coke!" or "Don't 'imperialist pig' me, my good man." (note: zompist.com covered here way back in the dark ages.)

CareDecision will install its ResidenceWare platform in as many as 65 hotels in the New York area: The deal will start with eight hotels in New York City, including a Days Inn, Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, and Super 8. The platform includes a PDA in each guest room that interacts with the hotel manager over a Wi-Fi network. The PDA can be embedded in the wall behind a screen to avoid damage. Guests can use it to order food from local restaurants, arrange for laundry to be cleaned, and buy tickets for tourist events. The first implementation will include 600 PDAs and ultimately CareDecision thinks the deal will include installation of 5,800 units....

Worst hotel wifi...ever 04/15/2005 12:57 AM
I'm at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort (trip #2 of my 3 trips to Phoenix over the course of 8 days). The hotel is lovely but their broadband offerings consist of two parts: You can get broadband via a wire in your bedroom for $10 for 24 hours, or you can take advantage of the wifi in the hotel lobby for $10 per use. Yes, per use. Cheaper hotels offer wifi for free. More expensive hotels sometimes, in my experience, make you pay for a wired hookup in your bedroom but provide free wifi in the lobby. Leave it to the...

Censored WiFi at hotel in San Francisco

Censored WiFi at hotel in San Francisco 07/20/2004 04:44 AM
Metafilter Matt is staying at a free WiFi hotel in San Francisco, and he just tried to visit MeFi to post some messages, only to be confronted with a censorware message from the hotel's ISP, primly telling him off for visiting a dodgy "chat site," something that, apparently, the hotel doesn't want its guests doing. Jesus Screaming Christ, what jackass at the hotel decided that filtering its guests' Internet access was a good idea? I wish Matt had published the hotel's name so that the rest of us could avoid the hell out of it.

FWIW, the Ho tel Tropicana on Valencia (around the corner from my old apartment) has free and completely open WiFi (SSID: linksys) was just remodeled, and is pretty cheap, and very central. Link
