onlamp: Introducing Smarty: A PHP
Template Engine

While that process is certainly valid and useful, most developers agree that the separation of business logic and layout logic makes the code a lot easier to understand and maintain. This is the reason behind templates, to separate business logic from layout.

Smarty is a somewhat new development in the PHP world, and it brings several new and unique features. One of these unique features is that Smarty 'compiles' the parsed templates into PHP scripts, and then reuses the compiled template when appropriate. Obviously, this brings a huge performance improvement over other template solutions, as the main PHP script doesn't need to parse and output the same template on every request.

TuneGrabber.com on Thursday announced it is letting people earn iTunes Music Store gift certificates while shopping at popular online retailers such as Macy's and Office Depot. Shopping through TuneGrabber gives users TuneTokens for each dollar spent at participating retailers. After accumulating 10,000 TuneTokens, a $10 iTunes Music Store gift certificate will be sent out via email. New TuneGrabber members will automatically recieve 1,000 TuneTokens. "This is an incredibly simple and rewarding way to get free, legal music downloads," TuneGrabber founder Sasha Nordeen said. "Many consumers shop online but are completely unaware of the bargains and perks that can be found if you know where to look. Visiting TuneGrabber.com before you begin shopping is the key to receiving free music downloads for doing something you had planned to do anyway. There's absolutely nothing to lose and lots of free music to be gained."

A shaky handshake

A shaky handshake 08/14/2004 09:49 AM
Earlier this week, Hewlett Packard pulled a <A HREF="http://cbs.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/newsArticle.asp?gui d={93E6576A-9EC4-4985-A6F6-7A682EBD8426}&siteid=mktw&archive=thirdtrue &dist=RegSignIn">surprise</A> move that had investors — and perhaps Apple’s executives — heading for the hills when they dropped several bombshells on Wall Street: For one, its earnings were announced a week ahead of schedule and were peppered with disappointment. Citing "costly glitches with a new ordering processing system and softer-than-expected demand for its server and storage products," HP vowed to "change management in the enterprise server and storage systems division." However, there was a much more shining figure obscured under HP’s muck — the company nearly doubled its profits and saw a significant jump in personal computer sales over the same period a year ago. Of course, this is all good for Apple and its partnership with HP to create a consumer digital music player based on the iPod. But unfortunately, investors didn’t seem to notice, or care, and share’s tumbled accordingly. In fact, Hewlett Packard lost about $3, or approximately 15-percent, this week, even falling through Dell’s spirited numbers which gave the tech sector a much-need end-of-the–week boost. To top things off. HP also trimmed its next quarter outlook. How this will all affect Apple remains to be seen — especially since the device has yet to be released — but it hasn"t fared too well with partnerships this year. The Pepsi promotion yielded disappointing results; the iPod Your BMW campaign has produced less-than-favorable reviews; and IBM’s production woes have hindered any real advancement of the G5 line. While the HP union seemed like a slam dunk from the start, if HP can"t get its act together, all will be for naught. Investors are going to need to see growth from both companies to latch on to the idea, and if they don"t, there’s not going to be much incentive for Apple to outsource another technology. It may just be bad timing, but HP"s woes could spell another Apple partnership disaster.

Who Has The Secret Handshake To Get In
On The Google IPO?

Who Has The Secret Handshake To Get In
On The Google IPO?
08/11/2004 06:59 PM
Last week we noted that almost all of the underwriters supposedly offering shares in the Google IPO had set up large (around $50,000) hurdles for the "average investor" Google was supposedly targeting. That article, though, noted that Ameritrade and E-Trade didn't have those hurdles. Or, maybe they do. A reporter who signed up for an Ameritrade account to invest in Google was rejected by Ameritrade for no clear reason. He answered a bunch of questions truthfully, and about the only one that seems likely to have set off some alarm bells was his net worth. Still, it wasn't in the lowest bracket, and it certainly sounds like this guy could afford $500 on a few shares -- and he made it clear he knew what he was doing. Ameritrade, though, like all the other brokers refuses to explain how they pick who is eligible and who isn't. It makes sense to set up some eligibility barriers to avoid some speculators, but it's increasingly looking like Google's IPO for the average investor isn't really for the average investor at all.

Russ on phone
I attended the 'Reverse engineering' tutorial by Andrew Huang - the guy who cracked the X-Box. He had also cracked his arm, but that didn't seem to slow him down. I have to say that I got a bit bored of all the x86 assembly code flowing with a font that was just barely readable, so I spent some time tweaking the all new Finnish blog awards page, coming soon to a server near you.

For the second tutorial of the day, AT&T kindly gave us Sony Ericsson T616 phones, so that we could try some hands-on hacking. I promptly found that the screen on these babies is abysmally bad at direct, 25 degrees Californian sunlight... *grin* But Russell Beattie's cool to listen to - he's certainly the archetype for us NADD people. At the moment he's hacking at his home server using SSH on a big screen... Then he showed us accidentally his password to a web service :-)

However, I don't believe that these tutorials are really of too much value - for me anyway. Most of the stuff I am already familiar with, or could learn quickly otherwise; or it is too detailed to get me excited. *shrug* Should've gone to the Digital Democracy thing.

two how tos: do something with all that digital footage and how to record movies to a portable video player

i wrote a couple how to's, the first is how to make "auto-movies" with all the footage we all have on dv tape, but never do anything with it. the second how to is how to record movies (dvds) to portable video players. the deal is, all these portable video players are coming out and if you own movies, you can't get them on the device you just bought, well- you can, it's just not clear how or if it's legal. the how to explains all this and more.

Tutorials - Using CVS With XCode 07/16/2004 01:38 PM
Have you ever been working on a project in Xcode, taken a direction in the code, and wished you hadn't? You sat there and just wished you could go back to the way your code was three days ago before you decided that bad idea was a really good one. Maybe you work in a team and were frustrated when your coworker was working on the same file you were and saved over the three hours worth of changes you had just made. Both of these issues would be nonexistent if you used some sort of version control in your coding projects. Version control is taken care of by some sort of source code management system. These applications keep track of version history, releases, code differences, and many other features.
