Looks like the porn police have kicked into high gear in Malaysia. The government there has just said that all cyber cafes must use web porn filters. We assume this is being done for the sake of the children, as all earnest anti-porn measures are, though the story doesn't quite make clear what the real intention is. Still, as many people pointed out when the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of manda tory filtering in libraries, the filters will cause many more problems than they'll fix. Namely, they'll do a bad job of actually blocking porn sites, they'll inadvertently block many reasonable and useful non-porn sites, and they'll be very costly to implement. Even worse, the Malaysian mandate will be forced on private businesses, not on free public computers in libraries. One service provider quoted in the story says that it's only censorship if filtering is done by the ISP, rather than software on the PCs -- where the owner of the PCs gets to pick what filters to use. However, since those filters are mandatory, it certainly seems to qualify as censorship under most definitions we know. The really unfortunate part is that, unlike millions of people in the US, many Malaysians probably don't have a home computer they can fall back on when the government goes overboard with useless filtering on publicly accessible computers.

Nader: It is "censorship" to say "I
shouldn't run"
02/10/2004 02:53 AM
I realized today just how angry I remain at Ralph Nader, former hero of mine, while listening to him on NPR today. Apparently, Mr. Nader is considering another run for president. When pressed quite effectively by Melissa Block to respond to the many many many who are begging him not to run, including the Na tion, Mr. Nader responded that such a request was "censorship." This man is truly outrageous. The only thing a Nader candidacy would do is increase the chance that Bush will be reelected. This man has become unsafe -- to himself, and to the nation. If he has friends, they should be his friend and stop him from this. Which got me thinking: If you believe that but for Nader's not withdrawing in the last moments before the 2000 election, Bush would not have been elected (which is true), and you believe that a Bush presidency has caused great harm -- to the nation, to the environment, and to the families of soldiers lost in Iraq (which is also true), then which has been more harmful to society: The Corvair or its enemy?
Nader0004.png
And what would we say of a car company that released a Corvair again? And oh, by the way, is it "censorship" to say you should not run, Mr. Nader? No, it is not. It is asking you to do what you have asked corporate America to do for your whole life -- take responsibility for the consequences of your actions. When I hear you explain why you did not cause the election of George Bush, you sound like a tobacco executive. And when you increase the risk of a second term for President Bush, you are behaving worse than an auto executive from the 1960s -- the harm will be the same, but at least profit is taxed.

Censorship To The People!

Censorship To The People! 06/10/2004 12:50 PM
Just as Vietnam has been forcing internet cafes to register their users and report the uploa ding or downloading of "bad information", China has apparently realized that they can't censor the internet effectively on their own. So, they've now created a nice little site where anyone can be a good citizen and report on their neighbors for being bad information purveyors online. It's unclear if there's any sort of "reward" for being so forthcoming, but how long will it be until people start reporting the government's own websites and other such information as being questionable?

Micorosoft and Censorship!

Micorosoft and Censorship! 06/17/2005 03:49 PM

I am going to get to my point but it is going to take a paragraph or two. I have talked about my BBS before, and you may be thinking how does that relate to Microsoft and Censorship. Well for a number of years people could connect to the site via a custom software client. That client not only allowed you to access the BBS but it allowed you to surf the Internet. It was designed for the early Internet days when people were still dialing into the BBS and tunneling into the net. The client had an IP component and those that dialed into ISP could access the BBS with the tool via an IP connection. The cool thing was that tool allowed people to use my site as proxy service. It was not advertised but somehow this info made it into China.

I started noticing a very high number of Chinese people creating accounts, and connecting to the BBS, then spending their alloted free time on the system surfing websites the Chinese government had blocked, they never used the BBS but instead used the BBS as a gateway to US news sites and message boards.

I was cool with it at first, I figured hey they can access stuff that is blocked by their government, and It was my way to put 2 middle fingers up, and point them toward the communist government saying screw you.

Well it started to get out of control, my system had 400 available nodes and they filled them all. I was on a unlimited bandwidth pipe but my regular users were starting to suffer, and I had to reduce the number of nodes, that I allowed people to use this quasi proxy service. Finally the Chinese figured it out and blocked our domain. Party over!

That was 1996-7 before people started abusing proxy services, and doing malicious things. When you do not have freedom of the press or freedom of speech in a country, then individuals, are going to seek avenues to say things openly and without repression the world needs to hear, then we as people of free nations, can bring pressure through or governments or via personal actions to make these governments open up.

Even then I kept and eye on the log files to make sure somebody was not doing anything that would cause my front door to be kicked in. I felt I was being a responsible citizen defending free speech etc. I have never discussed this before because at the time I felt it was the right thing and it was a personal victory. I did not communicate with those using the system and they never once communicated with me. But they did so by theie web surfing actions I could tell by the log files what sites they were visiting. (cnn.com, abc.com, nbc.com)

So I have been watching the debate with Microsoft since their Chinese censorship issue raised it's ugly head. I'll be honest I am pissed! If a guy like me, in a very small way help people get information and allow freedom of speech when it is represeed in their own countries then a big company like Microsoft damn well better also.

Microsoft not only has a responsibility to it's share holders but being this companies headquarter is in these United States of America were we believe in free speech, they have a MORAL and ETHICAL responsibility to tell the Chinese government, "NO"! we will not sensor words that your citizens try to write on our websites.

I am very disappointed in Bill Gates and all the rest of the Board Members at Microsoft. You should be ashamed of yourselves, and I hope that you don't sleep well at night knowing that you are enabling a foreign government to suppress the will of the people. This makes me Sick, can I be anymore graphic! [ Dan Gillmor]

File Sharing Against Censorship

File Sharing Against Censorship 04/09/2004 04:04 PM
In the early days of the web, there was lots of talk about how it would help usher in democracy and bring down dictatorships, because information could not be contained. Turned out that wasn't exactly true, as places like China do a pretty good job (though, certainly not perfect) containing information online. So now, more people are starting to look at ways to use file sharing as a news delivery system that is much more difficult to block than typical file sharing. This isn't all that new, but making such programs easier to use would go a long way towards getting this to work. In fact, why not combine the concept with a news aggregator of some kind, so that the news you're reading is automatically available to everyone else using the software.

Google Censorship, Ouch

Google Censorship, Ouch 06/23/2004 01:25 AM
From Perrspectives, a fairly ordinary U.S. left-liberal political site (but with an above-average sense of humor), a shocki ng story of being cut off by Google AdWords for “language that advocates against an individual, group, or organization.” Earth to Google: that country you’re based in is going through a war and an election! A substantial part of the population is (quite properly) advocating like crazy against one political faction or another as a result of one or the other. The Perrspectives folks point out that the policy, on top of being, uh, wrong, is also broken, in fact lots of people are using Google AdWords for political rhetoric and polemic; the appearance is either of political bias or of incompetence. I’m not sure whether I’m saying Don’t be evil or Don’t be stupid but whichever, please don’t.

FCC chairman hails VoIP
Michael Powell
If you're a big incumbent and you've sort of enjoyed a competitive advantage . . . you, in my opinion, ought to be terrified.

I think it's going to be the very, very best and biggest breakthrough in our ambitions and dreams about competition ever.

via Kevin Werbach

Exactly.

Reuters
Oxygen Media Inc. CEO and founder Geraldine Laybourne criticized the FCC's enforcement effort during the National Cable & Telecommunications Assn.'s (NCTA) annual trade show.

"I don't think we should use the word indecency; we should call it what it is: censorship," Laybourne said Tuesday during one of the show's panel discussions.

Laybourne's comments came after a Q&A session with FCC chairman Michael Powell and NCTA chief Robert Sachs.

"I don't agree with that," Powell told reporters after his dialogue. "For 70 years, the country has had limits on broadcast television. To me censorship is prior restraint, and I don't think anybody has been involved in that limitation on content."

via Jeff Jarvis

Umm... I don't think so.

I guess 1 out of 2 isn't bad.

Persian blogger hoder tells BoingBoing:
Net censorship in Iran has been intensified lately by the government, using expensive filtering software that they've just bought. There are also reports that the TCI (Telecommunication Company of Iran) has blocked Google Cache to stop people accessing the filtered websites. At the same time, Iran has sent a big delegate to the World Summit on information Societies in Geneva.
