Roogle :: It's a Whole New Blog Just for Roogle

For those who don't care a whit for any of my other antics but feel that Roogle is interesting, I just set up a new blog for it.  [_Go_]

And here is its own RSS feed even.

You may notice that the location is below the FuzzyGroup domain not below the Roogle directory.  Why?  Because I know the name won't stay Roogle for long and I don't know where its going so this at least gives it a permanent home.

I know the UI needs to be synchronized with Roogle itself and that will happen but it needs to wait for the UI on Roogle to get updated.

Adesso's Cameras: Mini? Check. Assy?

Kyocera isn't the only camera company taking hot fashion tips from Apple's iPod mini. Adesso has a new line of new cameras that seem to match, at least superficially, the green, pink, and blue colors of the mini. However, in an interesting break from Kyocera's form, the Adesso cameras seem to be exceptionally, well, crappy, with the high end model rolling in with a 1.3-megapixel sensor. I guess hoping for an LCD on the back of these is asking too much, huh? I think this is one time when following the 'smaller is better' ethic is probably a misstep.

Even worse? They're not even out. (Thanks, Justin!)

Roogle Changes

A couple of new things and some metrics:

  • Approximately 1000 odd feeds now
  • Reindexed the database
  • I wrote an OPML loader so if you want me to load an OPML feed from your aggregator, email it to me and I'll do so.  I'll add a webpage to do that too but that'll take a bit.
  • Credits are greatly expanded here and all the logos people sent me are shown as well.
  • 43,000 plus queries.
  • 13,000 plus distinct ip addresses logged.
  • 219,604 plus hits so far.
  • The real full text search engine is partially working -- I have all the code but its a matter of finishing it while doing everything else.

Roogle, No [New Name Here] Update

Roogle, No [New Name Here] Update 03/11/2003 11:41 PM

Roogle, No [NewNameHere] Update

Well the new domain name exists now, its hosted and i'm waiting for dns resolution.  I spent most of the day on infrastructure and clean up.  I did implement one new feature -- filtering of any blog on the results list from your search.  It works like this:

  • You search for something, say "roogle" [_Example_]
  • Then you realize I don't care what Scott has to say, I want to see what others have to say
  • So you click the green  icon next to the search result and that blog is now excluded from the search  [_Example_]

Note: This feature was originally requested as a "I don't care about my own blog in the search" feature but then I realized it was more useful.   The filtering is one level only right now so if you filter out Scott and then filter out Bob, Scott comes back.  I'll work on that.  This feature is only in a development url, not the main url so don't wonder when its not there for you.

Other Stuff

A bunch of new code added today but not all of it visible:

  • Event log for tracking down when RSS
  • Problem and Suggestion forms for tracking requests
  • Some fixes to my guess_rss_url routine for when a blog doesn't support the LINK element
  • Search filtering
  • RSS output of search results which works in NetNewsWire and AmphetaDesk but oddly not in Radio.  Have to fix that.

More stuff tomorrow.

Roogle :: Top Ten Queries Via RSS

Thanks to inspiration from Brent / Net News Wire, I made an RSS feed out of the top ten queries.  I'm not really comfortable with its appearance but I'm working on it.

Note: This is very loosely tested, only looked at in Radio's Aggregator, and could break other tools.  I'll qa more tomorrow.

Tomorrow the changes will be much more under the hood as I (hopefully) get the phrase searching working.

Roogle :: Updates

Ok.  A few more things:

  • Fix that ultimate act of brain deadness -- letting null searches throw errors.  Thanks to Matt Mower for pointing this out
  • Fixed a bunch of database schema errors
  • Rebuilt and reindexed the database
  • Added the ability for to drill to all postings by an author from a search results list -- Example&nbs p;(click the + sign)
  • Added the ability to view / add comments in the blog's RSS feed supports it
  • Sped it up a bit by removing an unneeded class
  • Wrote admin tools for myself (yup -- that means its real, when you need tools).
  • Fixed a bug displaying the RSS feeds.  Thanks John !
  • Roogle is now #8 on Blogdex.  Go figure.
  • Added the title into the index
  • Recognized that there is a bunch more I need to learn about RSS.  Time to visit Mark!
  • Set my indexing routines up so I shouldn't have to go offline again (database / indices are now swappable by me)
  • Recognized an interesting issue with indexing via RSS feeds -- if the RSS feed uses the LINK element for the item it is linking to then there is no way for me to link directly to the post only to the posts target.  For an example, see Puzzlepieces.  Now I know other, smarter, more talented folks than I have traveled down the "RSS War" path and I'm not gonna do that.  I'll just keep reading up on this and figure out a possible solution.

Thanks to everyone for all the nice comments so far.  Muchly appreciated and has sustained me through 14 hours of non-stop coding today.  I even got a posting from Natrak over in Norway (and yes, my friend, I tossed your blog into the next index update pass).

Note: the total # of items in the database has fluctuated due to the database changes and 1 rather silly mistake when coding fast.  It should now be correct and shouldn't again fluctuate to a smaller level.

Roogle Update

Well after a nice little 3 hour odd drive to Maine (dinner with my Mom), getting lost / discovering that I-95 in Maine has two Exit #2s, I've gotten back to Roogle.  Changes:

  • Rebuilt the index
  • Responded to everyone's email.  Thanks for all the nice words.
  • Discovered much to my surprise, people are already using it -- over 500 queries logged already
  • While driving, came up with 20 odd new features I want to add and figured out how to fix a few bugs
  • Changed the indexing mode from text to HTML to plain again (experimentation not bi-polar, really!!!)
  • Added a bunch more blogs.  If you emailed me before 10:30 ish, you're in.  Tomorrow I'll make it self service so you can just add yourself

More changes tomorrow.  Some minor, perhaps some not.  Must sleep now....

Oh and if you haven't yet read Shane's "The Quality Depression", run don't walk.  Cogent, well thought out and dead on accurate.  [_Go_]

Morning and Roogle Metrics

Morning and Roogle Metrics 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
Morning and Roogle Metrics Wow. We've hit Daypop Word Bursts (#1), Blogdex (#5) and there is the continuing traffic from Slashdot. We're seeing MySQL queries peaking at 64 per second now and up to 464,000 total hits with 19,000 unique IPs logged. And, of course, the load on the UserLand back end continues. Wow. Interestingly with all this, I found an article by Cmdr Taco (who is one of the Slashdot creators) about all their RSS traffic. Cool. [_Go_] Oh and with all the IMs I'm getting right now, someone recommended I start using DeadAIM. I did. Its cool. [_Go_] Traffic to my blog has surprising stayed where it was (I'm still at #24). Is there latency in the server or do Slashdotters not read blogs? [_Go_] And with all this, I haven't even had the time to read the Slashdot thread beyond like the 1st three messages. Can anyone tell me if its positive or negative? We got 200 comments which isn't bad for a Sunday I don't think -- it was the #3 most active Sunday topic. Surprisingly Dave didn't mention that a Radio user and Radio author (me) was behind all this in his post. How odd. 1 and 2 Oh and as long as folks are bashing me for ripping off Google, at least it has a long history. Take a look at the Reverse Google. [_Go_] We're no longer on the front page of Slashdot so the wild ride will probably start subsiding now. Even as someone who has analyzed Slashdot traffic before, this is surprising. [_Go_]

Roogle Early Morning Update

Roogle Early Morning Update 03/11/2003 09:43 AM

Roogle Early Morning Update

I woke early with sugarplums dancing in my head ... Wait?  I missed Christmas?  Oh that's right I woke up with visions of Roogle metadata (# of queries, top ten queries, etc) in my head.  This is a great suggestion from Brent at Net News Wire and will be done later this morning.  Hm... Since I have my iBook again, I'm thinking I should download it and give it a try.  Everyone seems to love it.

What's new right is self service adding of your own blog!  Just go here and fill out the form and you're in.  Don't worry about whether or not you're in there already -- each RSS url is validated to only exist ONCE in the database and the blog url and RSS url are validated to actually exist on the net as readable URLs before they are accepted.

Note: If you emailed me about being added, no need to fill out the form again, I'll take care of it.

Welcome to the RSS Search Engine Formerly Known as Roogle -- I Give you Feedster !

Well I've got two very good pieces of news for today.  The first one is the new name: feedster.com.  The site is up and working.  Feel free to stop on by.

Logo help from Etation Media and I know about the swoosh...

The Name

I know we're going to get comments on the name.  Its ok folks.  A name is a name and this one is short (8 chars), .com and has at least something to do with the concept (RSS is a feed after all) but unique enough to be brandable.  Also at this point I think everyone would rather have us making you the best possible RSS search engine NOT doing the corporate naming exercise.  I've done those and they aren't pretty.

New Feature

Search results are now subscribable via RSS.  Lets say you want see daily results for a search on 'feedster' then just search for that on Feedster and then subscribe to the RSS icon at the bottom of the page.  Brent from Net News Wire pushed me on this and helped me understand the <SOURCE> element which is now supported.  Thanks Brent!  I also tested this in AmphetaDesk which worked like a champ.

Known Issues

Here are a couple of things:

  • I'm not 100% certain if this RSS of search queries works correctly in Radio.  I've had problems but it could be me.  Or it could be content encoding on RSS feeds that tell me they are in English when they're really in Russian.  Until we get language detection in place, this is probably going to be an issue.  Working on it.
  • The CSS tabs look horrible at least on my OSX box.  Anyone have a thought?  They work on IE 5.5 (pc), IE 6 (pc), Opera 7, Konqueror (more on that next post) and Mozilla.

If You Find a Problem

We could use the help getting any issues addressed.  There is a mechanism for reporting issues (and easily capturing the page on which the problem exists). Let's say you do a search and notice that your blog title isn't correct (as they aren't for all too many blogs; mostly my bad).  Click on the Report Problem link and just tell us about it.  Since query results can change, you might want to paste in the blog's url.  I'll look into adding that at the result list element level but no promises since that would mean making an icon.

Roogle Now Groups Search Results by Title

Ok.  Thanks to Jason's suggestion, I just implement blog grouping by title i.e. blog titles are now reported on the result list above the blog posting itself.  And if you want to jump directly to a blog's home page, that's now done too.  [_Example_]

Database was rebuilt and re-indexed.  Another 1447 postings as of an hour or so ago.  If you're wondering why I'm doing this all manually for now rather than as a scheduled job, its the normal cautiousness with a new system.

The award for "Most Cogent, Well Thought Out Email I Ever Received on a Saturday Night" goes to Mike of EraBlog.  I'm not a .NET guy but if I was, I'd be checking out Mike's stuff like asap (EraBlog is a .NET way to blog).  Mike -- I'm thinking strongly about your points.  Thank you.

MySpace: The Show. Social networking is definitely going mainstream. I see in Variety that a reality show is being developed based on people meeting through social networking service MySpace. [Note: the article led me to sign up for MySpace, and I will review... [Get Real]

I'd be interested in what Stowe thinks about MySpace.  I call it the "kitchen sink" of social networking.  I'm amazed at just how many features and capabilities it has.  For what it seems to lack in heart, soul and passion - it makes up with Rankings, Blogs and Games.  They even have classifieds!  And Yahoo ads all over the place!

But there's something about that place - which (BTW) they claim they have more traffic than Friendster right now.

MySpace - is #1

MySpace - is #1 03/06/2004 01:49 AM

According to a PR Newswire this morning Nielsen NetRatings confirms “Myspace.com‘s market leadership in Social Networking category”:

LOS ANGELES, March 1 /PRNewswire/ — MySpace.com, formally launched just over one month ago, today announces it is the number one ranked social networking site in terms of page views, according to Nielsen NetRatings, the leading online measurement tool.
“The latest Nielsen statistics validate what our users have been telling us for months,” said Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and President of MySpace.com. “By allowing our users to dictate the features they want, we’ve been able to develop an offering that keeps them coming back.”
MySpace.com has garnered an ardent and loyal fan base very quickly thanks to the technological superiority of its offering. MySpace.com is the only site of its kind to integrate blogs, instant messaging, classified listings, voting, groups, user forums, music and other user-created content. MySpace.com has also taken an active role in sponsoring music shows, parties and other events for its online users to socialize offline.
“To become the leader in the social networking space in just five months is an accomplishment we’re thrilled about, but we see it as only the beginning,” commented Tom Anderson, co-founder of MySpace.com. In addition to its technological advantages, MySpace.com allows a level of flexibility that is unmatched in the online social networking world. Users are allowed to create personalized web page profiles, which they can then use to link up and communicate with others of similar hobbies and interests. As the site is entirely advertiser-supported, use of the site is free.

[The Social Software Weblog]

This exposes what we've all known all along - that nobody goes to Friendster anymore.  And that it's lack of funtionality and features - makes it a joke.

Now I'm not sure if its MySpace's features, or people themselves - but they sure look like they're having fun over there.

MySpace continues to kick ass

MySpace continues to kick ass 06/30/2004 02:40 AM

Networking website offers marketing opportunities for musicians.

The networking website trend, while not exactly new anymore, is still thriving. While Friendster.com was the first to reel users into the world of organized online socializing, MySpace.com has since caught up. Many formal Friendster loyalists have since moved over to MySpace for its added features such as instant messaging, blogs, and classifieds. (That~s not to say that Friendster doesn~t still have its own dedicated fan base.) One of the site~s most recently added features, MySpace Music, is utilizing the networking space to spread the word about music artists.

Consumers tell us that they mostly find out about new music through their friends, which is exactly what MySpace Music allows users to do online. While musicians can also create profiles on Friendster for friends-of-friends to see, MySpace Music takes the concept a step further by offering band Web pages and music downloads, thus turning the site into a potential marketing tool. Similar to how Napster users can view other users~ music libraries, MySpace users can view each others ~friends~, thus providing MySpace Music artists with considerable exposure and access to their fans. With the buzz on MySpace Music, we expect to see more networking sites offering similar marketing opportunities in the future.

Just got this in my mail - and it's 2AM - so I guess Judith must be asleep - or else she would have blogged it already.

MySpace now has improved their Groups - and added it to their lineup of better blogging, classifieds, very coolio music features and special 'band groups'.

MySpace has proven that it really is about the activities and giving people something to do. IM, Ranking and Games seem to be the core activities.

Business model? Ads. Sposnorships. Special Band Groups. Watch for even mroe ''premium' features that folks will pay for. How many of them - you ask? Over 2M.

Man oh man - I just can't wait for the Reality TV show.

Just gotta convince Tom to support the FOAFnet.

Thanks to XKB's flexibility, one can easily create custom keyboard layouts.

Two- and three-column, liquid page designs with header and footer are easy to dash off using old-school HTML table layout methods. Cracking Iranian codes

Cracking Iranian codes 06/15/2004 10:17 AM

Bruce Schneier has written an interesting article discussing the accusation of Ahmed Chalabi of informing Iran that the US had broken its codes and when Iran knew that the NSA was cracking their codes. He digs into the history of Crypto AG, the NSA and Iran. He links to an article about Hans Buehler, the Crypto AG salesman who was arrested by Iran in 1992 on suspicion that Crypto AG had installed back doors in its encryption machines. There is no conclusion, but this story reminds me of Crytonomicon and the interesting world of information, misinformation and spying.
