What Is Lindows, Anyway? 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
Lindows is a Linux-based operating system that promises to make using Linux as easy as Windows. Indeed, its name suggests a combination of Linux and Windows -- but what exactly is this distribution that has found its way onto Wal-Mart shelves? Is it the next big thing or just good marketing?

Michael Robertson is not known for backing down when challenged. In fact, his specialty seems to be taking controversy and turning it to his advantage for the publicity. Thus, it should be no surprise to hear that when told he can no longer use the Lindows name in certain European countries, he'd change the offering name to Lin---s instead (pronounced LinDash). No matter how much of a cheap publicity stunt it is, you have to admit that the hangman graphic on the Lin---s.com site (yes, they got the domain) showing all the crossed off letters not needed to fill in the missing letters is somewhat amusing.

Lindows Becomes Linspire 04/14/2004 11:51 AM
Following Microsoft's round-the-world attempts (and some success es) to ban the name Lindows - combined with the unsuccessful attempt at using the Lin---s< /a> name instead, it appears that Lindows has settl ed on Linspire as their new name. Of course, in the end, they'll probably privately thank Microsoft for giving them so much publicity to get their name out there. Yet another case where trying to shut something down probably gave it a lot more attention.

Lindows to Change Name

Lindows to Change Name 04/09/2004 04:05 PM

Lindows.com - Michael's Minutes: Name Change: Lindows is changing their name because they're sick of getting sued. This is the right way to go. Far be it for me to defend Redmond, but the name was an obvious attempt to capitalize on Microsoft's market recognition. Besides, if your product is good enough, it should stand on its own. This gives them time and capital to fight other battles.

Lindows and Microsoft go to trial

Lindows and Microsoft go to trial 05/26/2004 10:48 AM
What's in a name? Well, if you're Microsoft that's exactly the question you want answered by a jury in reference to the term "windows." The question is central to Microsoft's argument that the name "Lindows" is too much like Windows, the Microsoft operating system. The only problem is that Microsoft wants the jury to decide if "windows" is a generic term today, not before the Windows operating system was released in November 1985. Unfortunately for Microsoft, District Court Judge Coughenour chose the latter in a ruling on February 10th.
