and.com Leaves Door Open
GarageBand.com -- a site
that both hosts independent music and uses a peer-review process to
identify hot bands -- is offering the Creative Commons Music Sharing
License to artists who want to distribute their tunes for free,
the company said Monday.
Nice. GarageBand is one of the
biggest legal mp3 sites and it's cool that they are offering a CC
license to their artists. Alternative distribution of music using CC
licenses is clearly a good idea and helps people understand the whole
Free Culture concept. I really
do believe that the issue will become more and more about how to gain
attention, not how to charge for delivery. It is changing from a
delivery problem to a discovery problem as storage and bandwidth
become commodities. Discovery is cheap only when you have a monopoly
on people's attention. Obviously, media companies like
Clear Channel are trying to
keep that monopoly, but I think users are going to dump those locked
up modes as new modes of discovery become available. I think that the
main way to get attention will be to become part of the conversation
and you can only do that if you promote active sharing of your music
and content.

05/27/2004 04:48 AMOne of the new features of NetWare 6.5, and which is also part of
Nterprise Linux Services and slated to be in Open Enterprise Server,
is Virtual Office. Many of the elements of Virtual Office, such as
iFolder, iPrint, eGuide and more, aren't new in themselves but the
"office" metaphor as well as the user interface is new. All that makes
working with these interesting and useful technologies easier for your
non-techie users (and isn't that most of them?).

Gameverse
02/17/2004 06:41 AMImagine a game which followed the freeform ideal to the limit. A game
that incorporated all genres from first-person shooters to space
trading sims to 4X space operas. A game where someone could fight as
an FPS grunt, in a battle directed by a tactical squad commander, as
part of a wide battle front directed by an RTS general, which was but
one part of a planetary war planned and executed by the ruler of a
galactic empire. A game where you would never go on a cookie-cutter
mission stamped out upon request by a vending NPC, because all
"missions" would be requests from other players for a particular
service, such as transporting a combat team to an enemy stronghold,
designing a corporate headquarters, or tracking the movements of a spy
working for a foreign power. Picture this, if you will:

How to be creative
08/01/2004 10:13 AMHugh Macleod, who draws the great "Gaping Void" toons on the backs of
business cards, has posted a long and very good rumination of the
formation, nurturing and execution of creative ideas -- complete with
comment boards.
10. The more talented somebody is, the less they need the props.
Meeting a person who wrote a masterpiece on the back of a deli menu
would not surprise me. Meeting a person who wrote a masterpiece with a
silver Cartier fountain pen on an antique writing table in an airy
SoHo loft would SERIOUSLY surprise me.

How to Be Creative -- the book
How to Be Creative -- the book
12/28/2004 05:28 AM
Cory Doctorow:
Back in August, I
bl
ogged about Hugh Macleod's "How to Be Creative" project. Hugh
draws cartoons on the backs of business cards and works in
advertising; his How to Be Creative is a meditation on creativity,
individualism and commercialism, and it's full of pithy, clear,
no-nonsense advice.\
Now Hugh has expanded the piece into a short book, which is online in
its entirety. He's found an agent and the agent is shopping the book
-- I'd certainly buy a copy!
Chaos can be a positive thing. Chaos is inherently part of the
creative act. To embrace creativity means you must also embrace chaos.
Things don't happen when everything is neat and "just so". Creativity
is all about distruption. The people who tell you that creativity is
pain-free are liars. The people who tell you they've got a plan are
liars. There is no plan. There's just you, God and the need to invent.
And this uncertain world is what most of us now find ourselves
entering, willingly or otherwise.
Creativity equals chaos. Chaos equals creativity. Embrace it or die.
I've already done so. I know all about it. It almost cost me my liver
but like I said, education is expensive.
The Creative Age is upon us. The Chaotic Age is upon us. We are
scared. Damn right, we should be scared. But out of the terror comes
the amazing opportunities for us to expand both on the material and
spiritual level. The fewer safety nets there are to save us, the less
choice we have to be anything other than ourselves, the less choice we
have besides doing what is meaningful to us. And finding ourselves,
doing what matters, becoming the person we were born to be, this is
what God put on this earth to do.
We live in amazing and interesting times. If we're lucky, while on
this earth we can do a damn good job proving i

Do You Own a Creative Audigy?
Do You Own a Creative Audigy?
03/22/2005 04:23 PMIf you purchased a Creative Labs Audigy series soundcard before the
end of 2004, you can get 25% of the purchase price back in a class
action lawsuit. The offer ends September 25th, 2005 so hurry! Go to this
website address for legal documentation.
Here is more from the Inquirer ..
Creative claimed that the products in question could handle 24-bit
audio at 96Khz – indeed this was stated on the product boxes in
bold letters, and in all advertising. But complaints filed in 2003
pointed out that this was only true in a very limited set of
circumstances, and pretty much all of the audio passing through the
cards would actually be processed at lower
quality… Owners of all of the original
Audigy series are included in the proposed settlement. This includes
the Audigy ES, Audigy Platinum, Audigy Platinum eX, Audigy Gamer,
Audigy MP3+ and also the original Extigy external USB sound module.
Creative did not admit liability, but graciously agreed to settle the
embarrassing case. Anyone, anywhere who purchased one of these
products before the end of 2004, and is unhappy with the audio
processing, will be able to get 25 per cent off the cost of their next
purchase from Creative's website, up to a limit of $62.50.
