Manipulating Search Engines
Manipulating Search Engines
03/19/2005 02:23 AMWired has a great article online about Greg
Boser who gets paid to make your website rank higher in the search
engine results. We all know that it’s not as easy to change
rankings as it was 10 years ago, but it still can be done. He
get’s most of his clients through speaking engagements and gets
paid on the results he gets. As he says in the article, “We make
lot more money doing this.” here is some of the comments about
search engines and manipulating them he had to say…
"I could create a blank page without a keyword anywhere
present, or a 404 error message, and if I can get enough sites to link
to it, I could get it to place first on Google," Boser said. But it's
not just quantity, it's quality. Theoretically, Boser could have five
inbound links and end up as the No. 1 result -- provided they
originated from mega sites like Yahoo and MSN. Barring that, 5,000
links from cheesy guest books, online diaries, blogs, zany products,
porn sites and anyone who honors link exchanges might do the
trick… There are other techniques
designed to fool search engines. One consists of cloaking pages by
hiding text in website backgrounds in a way that users won't see but
that targets Google's ranking technology. Another method is link spam,
aka "blog comment spam," in which automated bots plaster ads with
return links on the comments pages of blogs. Most common are ads for
pills, porn and casinos. Finally, there is "search spam," which are
machine-generated pages designed to appear in the engines to attract
traffic (and ultimately increase revenue).

Manipulating Google For Vanity And For
Politics
Manipulating Google For Vanity And For
Politics
01/22/2004 06:28 AMIt seems some people just can't get over their obsession with Google
results. The practice of "Google bombing" - getting a bunch of people
to link to a specific page with a specific phrase, so that a search on
that phrase returns the page, even if the phrase has nothing to do
with the actual page - is
turning into a political war as people on all
sides of the political spectrum are trying to associate various
negative words or phrases with politicians or policies they dislike.
This was sort of amusing the first time it happened, but now it just
seems really childish on all sides. It certainly doesn't do anything
to impact anyone's political beliefs. To me, it seems like the online
equivalent of a writing something bad about someone on a bathroom
wall. Meanwhile, though, there's another interesting trend that is
less annoying:
buying
ad keywords on your own name. The idea is not to influence the
main Google search terms, but to have some say in pointing people to a
specific site if they're searching on your name. It also lets you
know how many people are searching for you, as that will show up in
your Adwords statistics. It's becoming especially popular with
freelancer or individual professionals (doctors and lawyers) where
people are likely to search on their names. Apparently, it's become
quite a trend. I have no idea when this started, but the first person
I heard do this was
Glenn
Fleishman last July. Of course, there's a price involved - you
have to pay each time someone clicks on your ad.

Strings, revisited
06/16/2004 10:49 PMSo, I finally did the last draft of the bytecode/assembly level string
design for Parrot. It was a mixed bag--the per-string language tag is
gone (darn!) but national character sets stay (yay!) with a set of
"It's all Unicode no matter what you say" string ops thrown into the
mix. Like any other engineering task with multiple conflicting
requirements and strong proponents of different schemes, it's safe to
say that everyone's unhappy with the result, but I think everyone can
make do with what we have. What ultimately resulted, if you don't feel
like going and looking up the post...

Strings, some practical advice
Strings, some practical advice
10/28/2003 11:08 PMNow that I've gone off a bit about the structure of strings, you're
probably wondering what exactly good is it all? Knowing how things
work doesn't necessarily translate to any sort of utility, at least
not immediately. (I think it's essential for real understanding, but
real understanding is in short supply on so many things...) But some
good advice is in order. Like so many things I go on about, keep in
mind that this is from the standpoint of a VM designer/implementor--I
understand and do infrastructure. I have precious little experience
implementing applications, unless you consider something like
Parrot...

this New York Times article (free signup necessary) explains, you must

your friends into doing likewise. And while Gratis makes no secret of
this fact, somehow while giving away approximately 500 iPods a week,
the company's revenue for 2003 was nearly $5 million and 2004 is
expected to triple that.
I dunno. I'm not signing up. Have any of you signed up and received a
