The Next Portal Wars?

The Next Portal Wars? 05/19/2004 07:17 PM
It seems that, these days, everyone wants a piece of the "paid search" market. It's the big thing, after all. Still, as I read about how Telstra, down in Australia, is getting ready to "enter the market" by spending millions of dollars advertising their new "search and directory" service, it raises a lot more questions than it answers. First off, the article talks a lot about the paid search market, and how it's growing at phenomenal rates. It also talks about how Telstra is trying to take on Google, Yahoo and Microsoft in order to protect their current directory and classified advertising business. However, it takes a very long time before you get to what they actually mean by "getting into the search market." They're just building yet another portal, using Yahoo's Inktomi technology and LookSmart for search ads. Note that they're not doing anything to make "search" better. Really, all this turns out to be is a marketing play of the old school portal variety. They want to build a portal, hype the hell out of it, and then sell search-based ads on it - using the technology of others. There's no technology advantage. In fact, the technology they're using is actually the technology of one of their so-called "competitors," Yahoo. This has been raised before, but as the paid search battles continue there's an obvious channel conflict question that's going to be raised. How comfortable will these new portals (just trying to cash in with the marketing dollars) be with the fact that they're competing with the companies that are providing them their technology. Now, in some cases, they may try to build a better interface and a better user experience - which could attract some users. But simply surrounding the same old search engine with lots of ads and some portal type content doesn't seem to offer much of an advantage. If you read the article above, you'll notice that almost all of the "advantages" they discuss are for advertisers - not users. The advantages to your advertisers are useless if there's no advantage to your users, because you won't have any.

Widget Wars

Widget Wars 09/04/2004 01:53 PM
Longhorn may be 2 years away but the battle for your desktop has already begun. Longhorn will introduce a new user interface design language called XAML.

XAML on its own would be yet another user interface markup language. But combine XAML with the compositer in Longhorn and you can imagine all kinds of really cool mini-applications being created. When someone talks about MacOS X's "Dashboard" bear in mind that Microsoft's XAML predates it in announcement and may deliver much the same thing. Widgets are essentially mini-applications but without the overhead associated with a stand alone program. All of the widget-enabling programs give users a tiny glimpse of the cool stuff one might do with Longhorn and the compositer in terms of app creation. And one can easily imagine all these widget applications eventually supporting XAML to usher in a whole new wave of desktop customization.

We here at Neowin have seen the rise of desktop customization over the past few years and widgets may be the next stage in that development, particularly when one considers the potential of Longhorn. This article below goes through the various widget enabling programs already available and explains what's cool about them.

The Aftermath of the War to End All Wars

The Aftermath of the War to End All Wars 11/11/2003 11:48 AM
The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 may have brought an end to the Great War, but the ending was merely the beginning of the aftermath.
The aftermath years were a time of paradox, where the men who returned from the horrors of the trenches wanted to forget, and where those who had stayed behind, and had lost husbands and brothers, and sons and fathers were equally determined never to forget. It was a time where remembrance of the dead became a way of life, and where it was somehow assumed that all the best, and the finest young men of a generation had died. The other side of that assumption was that those who had survived were somehow less than those who had died. . . The exploration of that time, that world, is the theme of these pages.

Will Walmart's Entrance Signal Download
Store Price Wars?

Will Walmart's Entrance Signal Download
Store Price Wars?
12/18/2003 09:54 PM
I've been wondering how long the $0.99/song price for music could hold. Already, some say that the dollar a song price is too much, and basic competition would suggest that the prices will get driven down over time. The floor at this point is the $0.67 that the labels demand from each song sold. So far, the various download stores have mostly (though not completely) held the line at a dollar. Sooner or later, though, you had to know that someone would realize they could get more attention by going lower, and who else but the leader in "everyday low pricing" Walmart? They're testing their new download store with songs at $0.88 per song. Hello, price wars! Of course, they know that they'll be losing money on this offering, but they see it as a loss leader to get people to buy other stuff at Walmart.com. So, if the price war continues, at what point will someone realize that, since they're just using the music as a loss leader anyway, they don't mind paying the $0.67 themselves. For example, Apple already says they're losing money on iTunes, but more than making it up on iPods. Wouldn't they sell more iPods if the music were even cheaper? It's an optimization question of "how low do you go?" until the cost of the music outweighs the benefit of selling more other stuff. However, if the music really is acting as incentive to buy other (high priced, high margin) goods, you'd think they'll eventually be willing to go pretty damn low.
