Spammers Struggling, Moving Overseas
Spammers Struggling, Moving Overseas
12/15/2003 02:27 AMYet another in a long line of "spammer profiles." This one focuses on
two grandparents who spam for a living - but claim that times
are tough for spammers, and they may have to declare bankruptcy. I'm
sure we all pity them and the "free speech rights" go on and on about.
The article does a good job pointing out how spammers are quite
different than direct mail companies - no matter what the spammers
claim. It also points out, however, that spammers are all setting up
shop overseas, where it will be even more difficult to track them down
once the US law legalizing most spam goes into effect. I'm still
wondering why no one is demanding that, if we must pass such a
terrible law, why don't we have some clear review point, six months
from the law going into effect that will show how much more spam is
being received? If it shown (as most of us suspect) that the law does
nothing to stop spam (and may even help increase it), then shouldn't a
Plan B be lined up?

Why India is struggling with localized
language computing
Why India is struggling with localized
language computing
08/17/2004 07:53 AM While IT is improving the quality of life in many developed nations,
the use of technology is still out of reach for people in many other
countries. Nowhere is this digital divide as big or visible than in
India. Apart from access to a computer, unfamiliarity with the English
language is one of the biggest factors contributing to this problem.
In countries like India, where the majority of the population is
English-illiterate, computing has to speak a language the locals
understand. This is where user-interface localization steps in.

wireless deployment control
06/05/2005 11:48 PM
In a growing number of American states ,
city governments and telephone companies are struggling over policies determining who gets
to rollout city-wide wireless internet connectivity.
Telcos argue that cities offer unfair competition to their businesses.
Twenty states have already passed, or are trying to push through,
legislation that would impose heavy restrictions on communities
creating their own networks in areas already served by Bells and cable
companies.
Thirteen of those states--Arkansas, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri,
Nebraska, Nevada, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas,
Utah, Virginia and Washington--have passed bills restricting future
public broadband projects, though existing initiatives are allowed to
operate. The remaining eight have measures pending or have seen their
bills fail to reach a vote.

Email Marketers Struggling With Can
Spam, Spammers Doing Just Fine
06/01/2004 10:55 AMIt's been quite clear for some time that many spammers have absolutely
no intention of paying attention to any spam-related laws, such as
CAN-SPAM. However, for (more) legitimate email marketers,
the new regulations are already quite
a hassle - with many of them failing to follow the requirements,
putting them at risk of getting sued. This is a bit amusing,
considering it was these so-called "legitimate marketers" who were so
adamant about having CAN-SPAM passed in a way that would let them
"legitimately" spam more easily. Now, what they're realizing is that
they've added more trouble for themselves without doing much of
anything to actually stop the spam that drowns out their own messages.

Wayport Hits 6,300 Locations
Wayport Hits 6,300 Locations
01/04/2005 02:27 AM Wayport has 6,300 locations equipped; 5 million sessions in 2004:
Wayport announced that they have exceeded 6,300 hotspots between
locations with which they have directly contracted and those that they
operate as a managed service, primarily for SBC Communications's
FreedomLink network. The company also said that they had 5 million
connections in 2004, with 600,000 in October alone. Wayport had about
1,000 location at the end of 2003, and a significant subset included
in-room wired broadband hotels with Wi-Fi just in lobbies. Virtually
all new locations are Wi-Fi only in retail establishments. Dan Lowden,
vice president of marketing at Wayport, said in an interview on Monday
that Wayport believes they are now the biggest Wi-Fi network in the
U.S., having exceeded T-Mobile's count, which is just under 5,300
according to T-Mobile's location finder. (This doesn't include
T-Mobile's fee-based roaming partners.) "We're very very excited about
it; it's a big milestone for us. We're excited to be the biggest in
the United States," Lowden said. Lowden said that Wayport is adding
about 150 locations per week. They expect to exceed 6,000 McDonald's
restaurants by third quarter of 2005, pushing their total over 10,000
locations. Because certain large footprints have already been tied up,
such as many coffee chains, and because of Wayport's exclusive deal
for fast-food restaurants with McDonald's, Wayport is pushing into
different kinds of spaces and services. For instance, their deal with
Hertz gives them an alternate presence at airports. And Wayport will
work with venues that may not need public Wi-Fi at all, or it's an
adjunct to the real purpose: private services like cashless
transactions (which they're doing with McDonald's) and security.
Lowden also noted that even with the hotel market so widely built out
with high-speed services, there's still a lot of room to grow or
rebuild. "We continue to see opportunities where folks have had three
or four service providers over the last three or four years," he said.
Wayport's now an established firm with major partners making it easy
for them to bat clean up in cases such as these. The company has grown
fairly rapidly in the last year to handle the new contracts with over
330 employees now, with 150 hired in the last year....

FireTide Talks about Pilot Locations
FireTide Talks about Pilot Locations
12/02/2003 02:33 PMFireTide starts talking about its pilot rollout of a mesh wired
replacement, its shipping date, and the cost: In a briefing yesterday,
FireTide said that it had successfully rolled out over a dozen pilot
locations using its HotPoint mesh routing system, including an
airport, a museum, and a park. FireTide's 802.11b system, which costs
$799 (suggested retail price) per node, uses mesh networking
algorithms to automatically create an optimum route wirelessly between
nodes without customer intervention. Each node has two Ethernet ports,
which can support wireless access points from any vendor, or any other
Ethernet-enabled equipment. The company is based in Los Gatos, Calif.,
and Honolulu, and has worked with firms close to home. The Hotel Los
Gatos already had Wi-Fi in its rooms, but not in public areas or
meeting rooms. Company vice president Barbara Cardillo said that they
were able to have the hotel's public areas up and running in an
afternoon with six HotPoints. The Los Gatos Opera House wanted to
extend itself to businesses for meetings, but they lacked interior
connectivity. A few HotPoints later, linked to a business DSL in an
office in the building, and the Opera House is now open for commerce.
At the Kahalui Airport, where the FAA and USDA perform extensive
testing to avoid planes carrying invasive species in and out of
Hawaii, Cardillo said the airport faced a particular set of issues:
lots of low buildings separated by tarmacs with no connectivity among
them. The airport said it would cost $150,000 to connect the buildings
with wire, and would shut down various runways during construction. An
integrator came in and installed 11 HotPoints for about $20,000 to
fully enable the airport's baggage claim, baggage handling, and
offices; hardware cost about 25 percent of the total. FireTide is also
working with a company that brings PET scans--a next-generation
version of the MRI--in semi-trucks to hospitals around the country.
The company found that getting data from the scanner into the hospital
required annoying efforts each time because the same parking space
wasn't always available, and the only option they'd pursued was
stringing Ethernet cable. Now, with a few HotPoints, the semi is
linked right into the hospital network. Because HotPoint is just an
Ethernet replacement, the hospital and firm can overlay whatever
security they need on the link layer. FireTide also announced its
partnership and reseller program. The company will not sell...
