A couple of weeks ago we were speculating about the possibilities of a Certified Novell Engineer educational track for Open Enterprise Server. I mentioned the possibility of somehow combining the NetWare 6 CNE with the Certified Linux Engineer certification Novell offers for SuSE Linux (NetWare and SuSE are the two components of OES).

USB On-the-Go Finally Is a Go

USB On-the-Go Finally Is a Go 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

USB On-the-Go, an addition to the USB standard that would allow two non-PC devices to communicate with each other, is, after four long years of promises, finally seeing some life. This will allow for file transfers in the wild, far away from interceding PCs or Macs. This also means that piracy is SO much easier now and that folks will be swapping files and media like promiscuous MP3 nymphos.

There were a few devices at Computex that are currently using OTG including BTC's SG106 6GB MP3 which allows for instant file transfers between two devices.

It has been done. I put in the request today to have my DNS entries changed over to my new host. So, there may be some intermittent problems while all of that goes through, but everything should be golden within a few days. If you definately-without-fail need to get me an email in the next few days I would recommend you send it to an alternate address.

The Reality of Red-State Fascism, by Lew Rockwell. We consistently say "Man, we're on the road to fascism" yet people fall all over themselves to say "We're nowhere near it.". Well, when do we say "Holy shit...we're there"? Everybody's favorite libertarian gives us a timeline of the descent, and lets us know how we are now not just on the brink, but in the midst of Americanized Fascism:

"If you follow hate-filled sites such as Free Republic, you know that the populist right in this country has been advocating nuclear holocaust and mass bloodshed for more than a year now. The militarism and nationalism dwarfs anything I saw at any point during the Cold War. It celebrates the shedding of blood, and exhibits a maniacal love of the state...In 1994, the central state was seen by the bourgeoisie as the main threat to the family; in 2004 it is seen as the main tool for keeping the family together and ensuring its ascendancy. In 1994, the state was seen as the enemy of education; today, the same people view the state as the means of raising standards and purging education of its left-wing influences....it sees the state as the central organizing principle of society, views public institutions as the most essential means by which all these institutions are protected and advanced, and adores the head of state as a godlike figure who knows better than anyone else what the country and world's needs"

The ‘new’ XP firewall still doesn’t work on outbound connections - so you still need something like ZoneAlarm. “Microsoft released Windows XP Service Pack 2 to the masses today after months of delay and mountains of hype. But don’t think IT managers are chained to their desks feverishly working to install it across their networks. Those asked said they’ll carefully study the package on test computers to ensure compatibility with other programs before loading it…

04/12/2005 11:45 AM

Yet another example of why it may well be a good thing that Apple controls both the hardware and the operating system: turns out that PCs that are being overclocked may be responsible for random hardware failures that will crash Windows. "And it makes Windows look bad."

But Microsoft, being a court-certified monopoly, cannot simply ban or warn users who use overclocked hardware. "It takes only one false positive to get people saying, 'Oh, there goes Microsoft blaming other people for its buggy software again.'"

Finally, MLS RSS Feeds! 06/17/2005 07:16 PM

With everything else that’s been going on, I didn’t have a chance last week to announce that the RSS feeds for the MLS web site are finally up and running! They’re not dynamic, but you can syndicate every category/subject on our site. On the home page, you’ll find a feed for the last 20 items added to the site, plus a link to a list of all of our feeds.

Alternatively, if you’re browsing through a subject, there is an XML button at the bottom of every page just for that subject. For example, if you want to track what we’re highlighting about Video Games and Libraries (including our grant), you can view everything related to that subject, and at the bottom of the page is a link to the feed for what we’re posting to it.

I’ve tested the feed in a couple of different aggregators without any problems, so please let me know if you encounter any issues with them. Thanks!

yahoo goes after google (finally)

yahoo goes after google (finally) 01/06/2004 09:14 AM

Well, well. Finally, a year after purchasi ng Inktomi, and six months after buying Overture it seems that Yahoo has finally digested both acquisitions and is ready to move on from using Google for its searches and begin growing on its own in the area. The Wall Street Journal reports today (subscription required) that Yahoo is now widely expected to dump Google "within a few months". Quote:

Some marketing firms, which help advertisers manage their online campaigns for search-related ads, say they have been told Yahoo will switch from Google to its own technology as early as the first quarter.
Now, I suppose we all expected that to happen at some point (I for one am surprised it didn't happen sooner) but there's more meat to it, including mentions of Yahoo preparing to leverage its various web properties in making search a more personalized affair. Quote:
Yahoo isn't discussing many of its search plans in detail. But some steps toward independence can already be seen on the shopping section of Yahoo's site, which is now using Inktomi's technology. Type in "digital camera," for example, and the site shows pictures of specific cameras along with their prices, flanked by "shopping tools" that allow users to quickly call up price comparisons, fuller specifications and user reviews. By contrast, the same search on Yahoo's front page, which still uses Google's technology, returns a familiar text-based list of links, starting with those sponsored by retailers and followed by other camera-related sites ranked by popularity.

In the future, Yahoo officials say, searches could become much more personalized. They could be tailored to return results that reflect users' past Web-surfing behavior, for example, or preferences or interests they list in a profile.

With Google now expected to go public sometime before mid-year, things are surely going to get interesting in the search space. AOL might have to do something too to keep up with the other portals (ie., MSN and Yahoo), especially as dial-up erodes as a market advantage over time. AOL-Google anyone?
