A Requiem for Mr. Rogers got me thinking about the TV shows that spoke to me as a child. Captain Kangaroo was there and Mr. Dressup was always great. But for me, no one surpassed The Friendly Giant and "Look up. Look way up!" still makes me feel warm and safe. I did not have PBS available as a child but my sons did and for them Mr. Rogers was a favorite as was TVO's Today's Special with Jeff Hyslop's manikin who came to life each night. Who spoke to you via TV as a child? Parents, who is speaking to your children on TV these days?

Thanks to a recommendation by danah boyd, I've created an i-neighborhood for Brookline. The i-neighborhood site is an interesting experiment in adding a virtual layer to existing real world neighborhoods. (There's an interesting discussion of the nature of neighborhoods over at danah's site.) As of now, I am the only member of the Brookline i-neighborhood, and thus am, at last, lord and sovereign....

It's a Beautiful Morning in the Feed(ster) Neighborhood

Wow.  It was a *busy* weekend.  Here are the latest changes to Feedster we made over the weekend:

  • The database has grown to 73,331 posts, 5,302 RSS urls and 87,000 plus queries.  Wow.
  • With help from Sjoerd, we fixed the problem with Feedster's RSS feeds showing up in Radio's aggregator.  Thanks! We've now tested them in Radio, Ampheta and Net News Wire and if there are any other problems, let us know.  [_Go_]
  • Thanks to a gentle nudge from Chris Pirillo, we added (trumpets please!) sorting search results by date!  This is a big improvement since it helps you (a lot) with what's going on now.  Oh and if you didn't know, Chris was recently chosen as the best Computer / Technology Blog.  Congrats< /A>.
  • Improved our sugg estionproblem code with the ability to respond directly to inquiries from the inquiry, not a separate email program.  That's minor but it'll help keep us responsive.  And I'm a huge believer in customer service.  Even in this context of a free service.
  • Added some additional intelligence to the result ranking so for some terms (and its not huge yet), the "definitive" result bubbles to the top.  Take this search for example.  You aren't going to find that keyword anywhere in any of those postings.  Why?  Because he doesn't talk about himself.  Still that's the "definitive" url for this community.  More examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,7.
  • Brought back two features we had (briefly):
    • Filter or the icon strips out of the search results any results for that blog.  Example -- you want to search for something but you don't want any results from your own blog to show up.  Just click on the  icon next to your blog in the results list.  This wasn't my idea but my brain's too fuzzy right now to cite the right person.  Sorry.
    • Drill or the  icon shows you all the posts we have for the selected blog.  Very useful when you know its there but just can't think of the keywords.  You could also think of this as a "Virtual TOC" for a weblog.
  • Added support for the Apple Sherlock recommended "search comments" that let Sherlock know how to drive other search engines.
  • Attempted (un-successfully) to fix our style sheet for Internet Explorer on the mac.  Looks like its back to browser detection and tables for that platform.  Ick.  (also look for a css rant later today)
  • A bunch of enhancements to the core data structures and content processing / loading.  Doesn't mean much to you I know, but it means more good and frothy features will be flowing your way.
  • And I think there's more but I'd have to look hard for it to figure it out.

Overall?  The service just works better.  Let us know if you're happy (or not).

Bloggers get convention credentials: Does this mean we've arrived?

A new breed of political observers will be offering volumes of pointed commentary at this year's political conventions.

But most of these bloggers (short for Web loggers) don't fit the profile of a traditional journalist on the campaign trail.

[...] For the first time, the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention will credential a small number of bloggers to cover their nominating processes. Blogging was in its infancy during the 2000 campaign.

Salon op-ed on DNC bl0ggers 07/29/2004 05:05 AM
Danah boyd has adapted her rant about the NYT's dismissal of the DNC bloggers as "Web diarists" into an op-ed for Salon.
Blogging will not replace traditional journalism, but it presents a threat to the normative press culture and an opportunity for radical reporting. Bloggers do place the issue of professionalism under attack, not by being unprofessional, but by exposing the ways in which the media operates. As blogging reaches the masses, people are introduced to information that was not reported because it did not suit the party line. Bloggers will happily document the power games that they witness in the press room and will expose future Jayson Blairs. Bloggers also capture information that the mainstream press does not yet realize is valuable, which means that ambitious and digitally minded journalists are constantly scanning the blogs for information. More and more, journalists are thanking bloggers for new slants. The competition between journalists and bloggers for readers' attention results in more diverse and compelling coverage.

I just ran across The Weekly Read, a nice new weblog just launched by Seed Venture Capital Partners. It is like a business person's version of Mike Masnick's Techdirt, pointing to what they see as the interesting hi-tech and business stories of the week. While I don't think that we are going to see a resurgence of the days of Content is King, I'm wondering if as businesses weblogs like these become more ubiquitous, bloggers will be able to find jobs putting them out. I hope so. There are a lot of good writers out there who could use a real income....

Bloggers in Iraq

Bloggers in Iraq 04/21/2004 10:06 AM
A piece in today's USA Today about the growing weblog community -- in Iraq.
Fadhil's blog, iraqthemodel.blogspot.com, tells of his life and the lives of his two brothers. One brother also is a dentist, and the other is a pediatrician. "We wanted to help bridge the gap, not just between the U.S. and Iraq, but with the entire Islamic world," says Ali Fadhil, 34, the pediatrician. "The media is always taking a look at the bad stuff. We want to show the good progress in Iraq." The brothers' blog is written with an unusually pro-American viewpoint, especially coming from three Sunni Muslims. Sunnis — among them, Saddam Hussein — dominated Iraq's majority Shiite Muslim population before the war.

(...)There are about 30 Iraqi bloggers in Baghdad, plus a few other blogs written by Iraqis abroad. Not all share the Fadhil brothers' optimism. "You have your Fox TV. I am offering a counter response," says Faisa Jarrar, whose blog is critical of the U.S. occupation. Her mixed Sunni-Shiite family began in December with a joint blog, afamilyinbaghdad.blogspot.com. Now, each of Jarrar's three sons has his own blog. Raed, 26, Jarrar's eldest, is studying in Jordan. Khalid, 21, and Majid, 17, are in Baghdad. "All of our efforts are more individual efforts, but we have one common goal, to show the world what is really going on," Majid says.

Who Needs Facts When Opinions Can Be
Inserted Instead?
03/29/2005 05:32 PM
While actual studies looking at the language skills of kids who send instant messages and SMS text messages suggest that there 's no difference in language skills, why should actually looking at the subjects stop those who are worried about the impacts of these communications technologies? The folks over at Reader's Digest -- who built their whole business on the idea of "condensing" things down -- have published a study saying that many parents believe that such messaging technologies harm the vocabulary skills of their kids. Of course, the headline is more inflammatory than reality, because it's still less than half of parents who believe so (a quarter of parents believe such technologies help vocabulary skills). Still, the problem with this study is that it's not studying the actual issue at all. It's studying what parents think is happening, as opposed to what is actually happening. However, for many people that distinction gets lost, and they assume the study actually says something it never did.
