Ferry Wi-Fi to Expand

Ferry Wi-Fi to Expand 08/27/2004 01:31 PM
The trial deployment of Wi-Fi networks covering Puget Sound ferry routes will be expanded: The initial deployment covered one route, which Glenn trialed and covered for the New York Times. This fall, a couple of popular routes out of Seattle will get the service. The networks include a switch and APs from Chantry Networks. The ferry system expects to charge for the service and they can likely expect a good number of customers. Glenn reported that the boats that will initially have the service carry 12 million passenger trips per year. One of the routes, Seattle to Bremerton, is a 60 minute passage. Commuters who make the trip each day will likely be willing to pay to be productive during their two hours on the boat every day....

Leaving Tallinn

« The port of Tallinn with ferries on the left and church steeples of the medieval old town on the right in May. »

Is there a Law of Murphy that describes how that when you leave town for a day or two that all the people you have been waiting for weeks to hear from suddenly fill your inbox and attempt to call you as soon as you pass the city limits? Four of us got a super deal for the ferry and overnight stay in a nice hotel. The master planner among us [thanks, again, Arabella :)] also arranged appointments for hair cuts, manicures and such at a nearby spa which was very nice indeed. I hadn't had my hair cut in almost 2 years so it was good to lose the wookie look. :)

Tallinn isn't nearly as inexpensive as it was before it joined the EU. It's still cheap on some things but, as a rule, I don't think the prices are so low as to justify a trip only for shopping. The Christmas Market in the Old Town Square was a bit unexceptional when compared to the Christmas Market in Helsinki, but they did have a delightful Joulupukki who would ask the children to sing to him before he would entertain their holiday wish list. Totally adorable.

On the return ferry, the sea was quite stormy and I had a Dante-esque vision of hell - Imagine a small ferry filled with old people and their parents doing the tango to a loud live band playing the golden oldies of Finnish tango while being violently tossed around in seas whipped up by 17 m/sec winds while you have an angry stomach and a bit of a migrane. If the thought of freezing to death in the Baltic hadn't been less attractive than sitting in my chair trying not to hurl after the 2nd straight hour of heavy roll, pitch, yaw and tango, I might have considered jumping overboard. :)

Aboard the Bainbridge Ferry

Aboard the Bainbridge Ferry 03/25/2005 01:03 PM
I'm writing these works on a regular run of the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island: I hadn't yet--remarkably--had the chance to try out the regular prototype service that's been deployed on a majority of the Washington State Ferry system's runs. Mobilisa, a company based in Port Townsend, has built and is rolling out the test. A formal RFP will be issued this spring, based on earlier statements, to find a commercial provider that will take over operation, maintenance, and establish fees. I'm seeing 200 Kbps down and 50 Kbps up, which is pretty good for a moving ferry in a test out in the middle of Elliot Bay. I'm sure Bainbridge commuters are overjoyed: the island is a bedroom community for many downtown workers who managed to buy property out there when it was still considered a bit of a backwater....

Ferry Test Shows Wi-Fi in Motion

Ferry Test Shows Wi-Fi in Motion 06/11/2004 01:41 AM
Washington state ferries will have Wi-Fi by summer: It's been a while coming, but a small firm in picturesque Port Townsend ran their first full-scale test between that town and nearby Keystone, one of the shorter ferry runs. The system uses 5 GHz (possibly 802.11a) signals from ship to shore, and 802.11a/b/g on board. By summer, two heavy commuter runs for Bainbridge Island and Kingston will have the service in addition to the Keystone/PT route; by fall, the third heaviest single run, Seattle to Bremerton, will be added. The article lists the actual ferries that will be equipped. Even as a local, I'm not sure how many ferries run or in what rotation on each route, but it appears to be about all of the regular ships. Nearly half of the ferry systems' 5.1 million passengers handled in the first quarter of 2004--remember, this is the largest ferry system in the world--are served by the first three lines that will be equipped. Another 10 percent more will be added with the fall run. The first three runs have crossings of about 30 minutes; the Bremerton run is about 60 minutes. Service will be free until fall, when a price for service will be set....

A BB reader sez: "Thanks to the RNC, there are manditory bag searches happening on the NJ-NY Ferry. This fellow first got hassled with a re-search for carrying The Player's Guide to Faerun a D&D book, and then the next day, security tried to confiscate his copy of Ex alted: The Abyssals as 'inappropriate.'"
ExaltedTheAbyssalcoverThis morning, they're doing bag searches again to get on the ferry. And the guy doing the searches pulls me aside and says, "Sir, I feel that I need to confiscate this book."

I pause and say, in that tone of voice that most people would recognize as meaning, "have you lost your grip completely, chuckles?": "You need to confiscate... a book."

"Yes. I feel it's inappropriate for the other people on the ferry to be exposed to it."

...

He gets all pissy at me and says, "Don't you understand this is for your safety?"

"Confiscating someone's gun or bomb is for my safety. PErhaps confiscating someone's pocketknife or nailfile may be for my safety. What's so damn dangerous about my book?"

"It's INAPPROPRIATE!"
